BLACKHAWKS (27-7-6) at BLUES (24-7-5)
TV: WGN, FS-MW
Last 10: Chicago 7-1-2; St. Louis 6-2-2
Season series: The St. Louis Blues have defeated the Chicago Blackhawks in the first two games of five games, with this being the last at Scottrade Center. The Blues won 3-2 in regulation Oct. 9 in St. Louis then earned the second point in a 3-2 shootout win Oct. 17 at United Center.
Big story: St. Louis trails Chicago by seven points for first place in the Central Division, but the Blackhawks have played four more games. Chicago is playing the second half of a back-to-back coming out of Christmas break; the Blackhawks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 7-2 Friday at United Center.
Team Scope:
Blackhawks: Chicago started a challenging stretch of the schedule on the right foot against the Avalanche. The offensive outburst was keyed by Patrick Sharp's hat trick and four-point game, which was paired with a four-point outing by captain Jonathan Toews (two goals, two assists).
Avalanche coach Patrick Roy predicted the Blackhawks would run away with the Central Division, but Chicago coach Joel Quenneville isn't worried about his team getting too comfortable.
"We don’t talk too much about that," Quenneville said. "We know what our goals and objectives are. We prepare for the next opponent, St. Louis; we have a lot of respect for them and we know the meaning of that game. I wouldn't discount anybody in our division."
Blues: St. Louis went into the break on a sour note by dropping a 4-3 road game to the Calgary Flames in a shootout, allowing Mark Giordano's game-tying goal with 4.2 seconds left in regulation. The Blues had taken a 3-1 lead into the third period.
"It's beyond disappointing," captain David Backes said. "They turned it up a notch in the third there and we kind of thought we could sit on our heels and [Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak] made tremendous saves for the first 55 minutes and we kind of hung him out to dry there and they capitalized. Now we've got a disappointing feeling, rather than a satisfied one, leaving here."
St. Louis practiced Friday at Scottrade Center without leading scorer Alexander Steen (upper body), who missed the game against Calgary and is considered day-to-day. Jaden Schwartz skated on the top line with Backes and T.J. Oshie at practice, but rookie forward Dmitrij Jaskin, called up from Chicago of the American Hockey League this past weekend, could draw another key starting role.
Who's hot: Sharp has five goals in his past two games and 10 in the past nine. … Blues forward Chris Stewart was named the NHL's No. 1 Star for the week after scoring six goals and adding an assist, including a hat trick.
Injury report: Blackhawks goaltenders Corey Crawford (lower body) and goalie Nikolai Khabibulin (lower body) are out. … Blues defenseman Jordan Leopold (hand), forward Ryan Reaves (broken hand), defenseman Roman Polak (lower body) and forward Vladimir Sobotka (upper body) are on injured reserve.

Why do I get the feeling the long layoff is going to break Stewart's hot streak? He's not streaky like that, is he?

The era of good feelings is kind of falling apart. Steen being concussed puts somewhat of a damper on things.

On the flip side, Boat is back and the team called up Andronov. Hopefully Steener won't be out too long. But Boat should bring a good energy to the squad.

Also, according to the preview, Bergie is on the same line with Sobotka and Tarasenko, so he is playing wing... Please don't tell me I've missed this all season...

That game was an instant classic. It was a thing of beauty. Two plays that will be glossed over but were huge in the comeback: Elliott's save on the Sharp breakaway when Jax couldn't catch up to him. And after Stew's blind rim around to no one, Shatty held firm and battled for the puck. This allowed Berglund to come out with it, and one dipsy-do later, the game was tied.
The crowd was nice and loud too. Glad it was finally a sellout even though a bunch of them were Hawks fans, but nonetheless, hopefully this victory propels a lot more sellouts in the future. The game just had a feeling of a 'big' event. About as big as you can get in the regular season.
Also, 4 games in hand douchewads. We're coming for ya.

Re: GDT #37: 12/28/13 > Blues vs Hawks > 7:00 PM > FSMW/KMOX
Personally a fairly miserable night which prevented me from getting the chance to watch/listen/flashchat/whatever. But I was keeping up with the score via my kindle and it was like bipolar night for me. When the Blues drew the PP that Berglund ultimately scored on, I knew it would be a tied game. The stars just seemed aligned for a big comeback. The scoreboard wasn't refreshing fast enough so during the skills competition I was furiously refreshing every 30 seconds. When it popped up 6-5 final, I almost woke up the neighborhood. Huge to get a win like that against a team like that. I can't speak for how they actually looked out there, but it seems like they fought and fought and didn't give up the ship when the going got tough. When Chicago scored early in the 3rd I figured that was all she wrote. Happy for Jaskin getting his 1st of what should be many career goals, happy for Schwartz who will definitely be this teams best player in the next 3-4 years, happy for Vova who actually managed 2 assists which is just amazing to me considering the dude seems like the type of guy who, in his prime, may very well have a season where he scores 80 goals and gets like 5 or 6 assists total. Halak makes me nervous but what are you gonna do? If they were to, for some absurd reason, trade for Ryan Miller, it would cost them a haul. I'd rather just hang tight the way things are and hope for an uptick in the 'tending come the playoffs. I didn't become a fan until a couple years later, but visions of the trade with Vancouver dance in my head and it freaks me the hell out. The old timers definitely know what trade I'm talking about.
Anyway, ride this momentum tonight. Come out strong, put up an early lead and don't freaking coast.

Thoughts from watching the game live:
Blues were sloppy in their own end, and Halak let in two easy ones in the first. Huge props to Hitch for bringing in Elliott for the start of 2nd period, he definitely came up huge a few times and kept the Blues in it. The team kept fighting on and without quite a few key guys, still never looked completely out of it. Giving up the 3rd goal late in the first period could've been a back breaker but with Elliot in goal, the Blues came out strong in the second. And even though Chicago kept pulling away, Blues did not give up.
Jaskin had a really really good game and has shown the signs of what he could be in the future (for what I care, a straight Stewart for Jaskin swap with Wolves would be just fine). His first NHL goal was well deserved. Bergie, before he scored, missed several sitters Tarasenko set up for him that would have been much easier than the goal he actually scored. Speaking of Tank, contrary to Glen said above, he was never going in just looking for a shot and that's what makes him a great player. He had a few great passes when you'd think the play was not going anywhere. He'd be fighting two hawks in the corner and then boom, the puck is floating to the crease and Bergie is whiffing at it again. He could have had a hat-trick had he got some wood on any of those. Thankfully, Schwartz showed Bergie how it's done. Again, I don't think Tarasenko is the same kind of player as Ovie and will never turn into a 80G 5A kind of guy. Depending on his linemates, I could see him with 50G 40A or something like that. He is a lot more well-rounded and plays a totally different game. Can't really think of anyone to compare him to right off the bat.
Really the only two Blues that had a bad game were Morrow and Jackman. The others looked tight, fought hard and came out on top. I got my sweet revenge on a Hawks fan who spilled beer right onto my boots. Nothing else matters.
