Blues: We’ll match any offer sheet to Pietrangelo, Shattenkirk, Stewart or Berglund
Mike Halford
Jun 10, 2013, 12:14 PM EDT
This summer promises to be a busy one for Blues GM Doug Armstrong, as he’ll negotiate with four key restricted free agents — defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk, and forwards Patrik Berglund and Chris Stewart.
And, Armstrong wants to make one thing clear — he won’t let any of them leave via an offer sheet.
“Offer sheets aren’t a concern,” Armstrong told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It’s part of the business and you know that they’re there.
“Nothing in an offer sheet is going to be that much crazier than we’re willing to spend anyway.”
St. Louis has approximately $41 million locked into 16 players for next season. So, the Blues have money — nearly $23 million — to spend on the quartet of RFAs.
Assuming they spend to the cap.
Of the four, it’s been rumored that Pietrangelo and Shattenkirk would be the two most likely to receive offer sheets. Young, high-end defensemen are in great demand and a team looking to make a splash could up the ante for either guy.
Pietrangelo, 23, had 24 points in 47 games this year and finished fourth in Norris Trophy voting a year ago.
Shattenkirk, 24, had 23 points in 48 games this year and finished 18th in Norris Trophy voting a year ago.
It’s worth noting the Blues have over $12 million locked into defensemen Jay Bouwmeester, Barret Jackman and Roman Polak for next season, though Bouwmeester accounts for the majority of that ($6.6 million) and is off the books at the end of 2013-14.
Regardless, Armstrong doesn’t seen any of that affecting how he’ll approach his restricted free agents.
“We’re going to want it the way we think is proper for the St. Louis Blues,” he explained. “If there’s an offer sheet there, we’re very content with where we are with the NHL salary cap, we’re going to be able to match any offer and we will.
“These are core players that we’re not going to let go.”

Re: Showing Them The Money
Okay, matching ANY offer sheet for Shattenkirk and/or Pietrangelo? Done. Cool.
Berglund and Stewart? Ehhhhhhh. Depends how insane it is. I can't imagine another team going apesh(t over either Berglund or Stewart though. But, I've been wrong before.

Now that it's out there, Detroit will offer Pie a 70 billion dollar offer sheet and we'll be screwed. Obviously not that extreme, but you get the point.

I honestly feel Pie's furniture; he's not going to get moved and no one's going to offer him a great deal of money. The one I am the most concerned about, is Bergy. I feel another team will offer him the moon. He's one step away from having a major breakout year and he's, like Steen, has been our consistant "stealth bomber".

Re: Showing Them The Money
I don't know why people think Petro is going to make a shit-ton of money this next contract.
His huge payday will come after his upcoming new contract is over. Not this one.
I've heard some people say he will make $10+ million per season. If someone offers him that in an offer sheet... see ya Petro. I'd rather have the picks.
If he makes more than $5 million next year, that's too much for a 22 year old who has had one good season followed up by a disappointing one. Hell, the more I think about it...the more I think $5 million is too much. I'm not saying he won't be good enough to earn that type of money...I'm just saying he hasn't been at that level consistently yet.

Re: Showing Them The Money
I would give heavy consideration to letting Pietrangelo or Shattenkirk go for four first round picks, but the replacement players available in UFA is BAD!

Re: Showing Them The Money
And it could just be a card game to stick Bergy and Stew on there. My guess is if someone offers a significant offer sheet to either of those forwards the blues will take the picks.
If you just use the forwards in that statement, no one believes you, but when you tack on the stud defense, then people have to think twice.
But ya, if someone gives stew an offer that nets 1st round pick(s), congrats, he's yours.

Re: Showing Them The Money
How does getting the picks work? Do we have to make a qualifying offer and then if they sign elsewhere, we get picks? Do we get picks if they sign elsewhere no matter what? Do we have to match an offer sheet and have the player still sign with the other team?

Re: Showing Them The Money
Apart from being older and a bit on the expensive side, I wouldn't object to Rob Scuderi on a 2 year deal while Schmaltz get more seasoning. He's cup experienced and represents my neck of the woods. We need a little more east coast elitism on the Blues. Agreed, sseagle?
