TV Advice
I'm going to be doing my bit in helping the economy by buying a new widescreen tv
pretty soon.
Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should look for, or what I should avoid?
I'm thinking about a 46", with a price cap of $1,200.
Also, in an effort to get away from running a lot of cables up to the tv, I'm thinking about getting
one of those 4 to 1 connecting boxes, so that I'll only have one cable running up to the tv.
Anybody have any experience with those, and any input as to if there is any problem with them?
Thanks.

Samsung is quality. I love mine. The high-end Sony's are nice too. Panasonic is also a good brand.
Stay far away from LG and Westinghouse.
I suggest LCD over Plasma.

Re: TV Advice
I like my plasma.. I preferred it to all the LCDs I looked at of similar price/quality.

Re: TV Advice
I failed to mention that I had already decided on the LCD over Plasma, for a variety of reasons.
Right now, I'm looking at a Sharp, a Sony, a Sanyo, and a Phillips.
Anybody have any opinions of Vizio? I was told that they are made in California, but, haven't heard if that is a good think quality wise or not. They appear to have a good picture in the store, but
I get nervous about tv's without a track record.

Re: TV Advice
It's probably not any better than Sony, or some of the others, but I have a Sharp 32" flatscreen crt now, and it has a fabulous picture, and we have had no problems with it. In fact, I haven't seen any of the widescreens that have a better picture than I get now, but, I'm tired of having to wear my glasses to watch tv!Philo wrote:barnburner wrote:I failed to mention that I had already decided on the LCD over Plasma, for a variety of reasons.

Re: TV Advice
Just bought this Toshiba Regza 42" LCD 120Hz 1080P a couple months ago from Ultimate for right at $1300.
http://www.ultimateelectronics.com/shop ... ctID=19769
We went with LCD over plasma because we have so many windows on the back side of our house. The picture is great. My wife did a lot of research and the Toshiba's are very highly rated.
I am not quite clear what you are talking about with the 4 to 1 connecting boxes. Does your cable or dish box have HDMI capabilities? I am guessing if you are looking at HDTV's, the you have or will get a HD reciever which will have HDMI output. When we built our house we had PVC pipe installed so we could run wires through the wall from our mantle to the stand where our components sit. The pipe doesn't allow for a lot of wires, but two or three HDMI's fit just fine. Also, if you are looking for a deal on HDMI cables, go to Monoprice.com. A 25' monster cable with 1080P and 120Hz capabilities cost us around $285. I only bought one for our HD DVR. For our DVD player I got a 25' HDMI for $30 from monoprice and have had no problems with it. When I get around to getting a Blue Ray I am going to compare the two cables to see if there is a noticable difference.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. No - I don't have a HD receiver, and my budget, at least in the near future won't allow it.F Keenan wrote:Just bought this Toshiba Regza 42" LCD 120Hz 1080P a couple months ago from Ultimate for right at $1300.

My present DVR only has s-video and composite outputs, and my dvd recorder and dvd player have nothing above component outputs. Walmart, among others, sell these devices where you can plug all of your devices into inputs, and then just run the cable of your choice to your tv.
My thinking was that I'd just run s-video from my DVR and component from my other two devices into the connecter device, then just run one component cable into the tv.
In theory, it's supposed to switch automatically when each device is turned on and off.
I'll probably just have to buy it, and take it back if it doesn't work as advertised.

Re: TV Advice
I bought a 1080p 50" DLP because it was significantly less money than a plasma with comparable features. One of the issues you really need to look at with LCD and Plasma is refresh rates with fast motion scenes (hockey and action movies) and the DLP had no issues with this for 2k less than a plasma with similar rates. Was like $1,000, and I am totally happy with it.
