Your greatest moments in Blues history

Post by cprice12 »

If the Blues had a Stanley Cup in their trophy case, I am sure that moment would be tops for most people.

But since they don't, that leaves the door open for all kinds of "greatest moments" for everyone.

I was born in '74, so I don't remember much hockey before the early 80's...so I am sure some of you may have earlier great moments...like maybe Crombeen's OT goal? or simply being in the finals?

Favorite moments of mine:
- My dad took me to my first game. It was against Detroit...I'm not sure what year. I barely remember it. But we won 2-1 and the finish was a barn-burner...I remember standing up and yelling for the Blues to "get the puck out!!" in the closing seconds. Good stuff.

- The playoffs of 1993...the Blues swept the heavily favored Hawks in round one and then had an epic 7 game battle vs. Gilmour and the Leafs. That was some great, great hockey.

- Monday Night Miracle. This isn't #1 on my list because they ended up losing the series, which takes something away from this game when looking back on it. Kind of like the Pujols home run in the playoffs vs. Lidge a couple years ago. But still...great finish to a great playoff game.

I've got a bunch of others...but those are my top 3 I guess.

Tie:

Glenn Hall's "out of this world" goaltending against Montreal in the Stanley Cup finals in the Blues first year. The 67/68 Canadians were an offensive powerhouse, and Hall just flat shut them down, with superhuman save after superhuman save.

The infamous brawl in Philly, when the fans attacked coach Al Arbour, and Bobby Plager went into the stands, followed shortly by brother Barc, Unger, John Arbour, White Pine Tompson, etc.

For me, It has to be seeing Wayne Gretzky sport the 'note, or, every single Brett Hull shift.

I want to say it was the 97 playoffs, but I'm not sure- I was at the bar watching the game, so my memory is a little fuzzy. We were playing the Leafs, and we were down by one going into the final minute of a scrappy game. Goalie is pulled, extra skater is one the ice. The pucks comes out to the point to none other than Al MacInnis , who unloads the cannon and ties the game only seconds remaining.
I can't remember if we won that game or not, but that memory has stayed with me.

I wasn't a big blues fan until I was around 10 in 1993, but here is a list of memories that don't get as much mention as they should:

• Turgeon goal in OT game 7 vs phoenix in 1999 playoffs. I was watching in my room at around 2 am. I jumped out of the room and ran straight into a wall while on my way to watch replays on the big screen.

• Blues win 6-5 in December of 2001 against Toronto after being down 5-0 with about 15 mins left in the game.

• Blues win 11-1 against Ottawa; most goals in a game (1993?)

• Hull has a hat trick at Hat night vs detroit. (actually, he had 4 goals)

• Playoffs against the Hawks ('93). Hull takes a slap shot and Belfour catches the puck in his glove, but the glove pops off his hand and goes in the net.

• The day we fired Keenan / hired Quenneville

• The day we fired Kitchen / hired Murray

• The day we drafted Erik Johnson

That's a good one. Fuhr told his team, "get me to game 7, and I'll shut 'em out"...and that's exactly what he did. Why that doesn't get more attention nationally, I'll never know. That's much bigger than just predicting victory. That's friggin' huge. If Mike Richter had said that in NY, there'd probably be a movie made out of it.

I think I woke up my apartment building from all of the screaming when Turgeon scored.
After watching the replay and settling down, I called my brother at Eastern Illinois University...he answered the phone by yelling, "LET'S GO BLUES!!!!"

Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Geez, dont remember the year (pretty sure it was January 30), but my dad took me to watch my Blues against the Leafs (I believe it was a Maple Leaf Gardens). My first Blues game, and we blanked the stinking Leafs 4-0. I remember Al MacInnis scoring, and Craig McTavish having a pretty good game. I also got Brett Hulls autograph that game, I believe he scored too.. good times. Marcel Couisenau was in net for Toronto... and I got to see a Fhur.

I also went to a game a few years later, I think it was 3-3 with about 3 or 4 seconds left, and MacInnis shot the puck from center ice and scored on Potvin, haha, that was gold.

Also, the game the Blues came back from 5-0 down to win it 6-5.. man that was a joyous occasion the next day in school.

Oh, to be a Blues fan in Toronto... fun.

Mine was my first game on Feb 13th, 1997. It was against the Rangers and it was my first game. It was also Gretzky's first game back after leaving the Blues. He had an assist, the Blues won 4-1. That got me hooked on the game.

The first game I attened was vs. the Hawks. My dad took me. We used to watch the games downstairs on the black and white TV just to get away from my mom. Watching or listening to the game w/my dad are some of the best memories I have from growing up.

I don't know how anything will ever top the atmosphere at the Arena "back in the day" during a Blues/Hawks game. There would be more fights in the stands than on the ice.

Good times good times.

My other is April 19, 2001. I was watching the game at Ozzie's in Westport w/a friend of mine. During the 2nd period I told my friend, this game will go to OT and Salvador will score the GWG. We STILL talk about that game. Once again, good times.
John Davidson: "We're not dismantling the team ... we're building a team. That's what the fans want. The fans we talked to wanted to build a big strong team for the future. This is what ownership has promised when we got here in July."

The first game I saw in person the season after the President's Trophy season (2000-2001 I think?). A couple friends of my wife from the St. Louis area bought us tickets to a game. The Blues were playing a Keenan-led team and the hate for him was still strong. A picture of him would go up on the Jumbotron and the crowd would boo, then Coach Q would go up and get a big cheer. There were a few good scraps during the game as well.

Favorite moment probably was attending Game 3 of the WCF against Colorado with the Blues winning in double OT. Spent more money at TicketBastard that I had planned, ending up in a corner in the lower bowl. One heck of a game, silently urging the team to clear the puck and get it away from Turek before an Av could shoot it on him.

My favorite Blues moment is still Janney scoring in OT on Belfour. I didn't go to many games back then but did attend that game. That game converted me from a casual fan to making the Blues a huge part of my life.

I used to have the call memorized. This is as much as I can remember:

THEY SCOORRE!!! JANNEY!! JANNEY! FROM THE FAR BOARDS!!! IT"S OVER!!! .........THE BLUES MOVE ON, THE BLUES MOVE ON TO THE NORRIS DIVISION FINALS!!!

Belfour losing his mind was great too.

Another great moment was Turgeon scoring in OT in game seven against Phoenix. It should have been better though. I was pacing my dorm room listening to the game via Dan Kelly Jr. on delay. My phone rang and I picked it up and heard a friend scream "we did it, we did it!" It took another 15 seconds or so before I heard it on the internet feed.

The worst moment in Blues history for me was of course Yzerman scoring on Casey. The second worst moment was when the Blues let Hull go and third being when they didn't bring back Ken Wilson.

I checked youtube a few weeks ago and couldn't find it either. A friend has that game on tape but hasn't been able to locate it for a few years. I want it bad.

As soon as the wife turns the computer on at home, I'll access it and grab the video I have of it.
It's kinda crappy, and in slow motion...but it's still the goal nonetheless.
