Considering how notoriously cheap the marlins have always been, I'm shocked. But now they'll never pay up to keep any sort of supporting cast around Giancarlo. So he's set himself up for mega-riches but no shot ever at a world series.

He can opt out when he's 30. A lot can happen in 5 years, but if his value is still crazy high then, he can opt out to get paid big time by a contender.

What he's doing is giving the Marlins ownership a chance to prove they're serious about being perennial contenders, which history would prove otherwise. I think he thinks something might happen between now and when his current contract was set to expire, but his season ending injury was an accident, not a degenerative thing. He should have demanded annual opt outs. If I was a superstar on a team like Miami, I wouldn't even attempt to give them credibilty. They don't deserve it and there's a whole load of bigger markets I'd rather take my talents to.

WHOA!

Miller and Jenkins for Heyward and Walden.

I like this. Need to lock Heyward up though.

Heyward/Walden for Miller/Jenkins.

On the surface, I like the deal. FA is looming for Heyward but this is a great get for what the Cardinals gave up. Miller's ceiling was just about tapped and the Cardinals do what they always do: cut bait and upgrade areas of need.

Mo is a wizard.

I just heard a rumor that we're in on Scherzer now too and that was part of the reason we were willing to part with Miller.

Very torn on that. I like Scherzer. I like all local guys and Mizzou products that do well in the pros. And, I want them to play in St. Louis. And Scherzer is really good. But, I'm worried he will get paid a ton and not be as good as he's been the past 2 years.

Also seems kinda far fetched.

I'm not one of those guys who thinks Scherzer will take an unbelievable hometown discount because he wants to play here so badly, but it would be awesome if he did. That said, a 'discount' for him is still probably way too much. A 30 year old pitcher with his ceiling already reached is not a good investment for 6-7-8 years. Besides, we've got tons of pitching.

Agreed. The sentimental (right word?) part of me wants him. So does the part of me that enjoys big signings/trades. I'm a sucker for big names.

But, it likely doesn't make sense. If he was 26 or something, it might be a different story. But, it would be hard to justify giving a 30yo pitcher a big contract when we're loaded at that position, for sentimental reasons.
