I did too. :okman:

Analysts said Brazil simply didn't face tough enough competition to qualify. They said Brazil got an easy qualification and wasn't really tested. They mentioned Copa America and Confederations Cup. One of you soccer guys can expound on how that pertains to their easy qualification.

Well, Brazil didn't have to qualify as the host nation. They get an automatic bid. Here's what The Confederation Cup and Copa America are:

The Confederations Cup (From Wiki)
The FIFA Confederations Cup is an international association football tournament for national teams, currently held every four years by FIFA. It is contested by the holders of each of the six FIFA confederation championships (UEFA, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, CAF, AFC, OFC), along with the FIFA World Cup holder and the host nation, to bring the number of teams up to eight.
Copa America (Wiki)
The Campeonato Sudamericano Copa América, commonly known as Copa América (Spanish and Portuguese for "America Cup" or "Cup America"),[1] is an international association football competition contested every four years[clarification needed] between the men's national football teams of CONMEBOL, determining the continental champion of South America. It is the oldest international continental football competition.[2]

The current tournament format involves twelve teams competing at venues in a host nation over a period of about a month. The confederation has only ten members, so national teams from other FIFA confederations are invited to fill the other 2 places; Costa Rica, Mexico and the United States have been regular since being invited for the first time in 1993. In 43 tournaments, seven national teams have won the title. Uruguay is the current champion and the most successful team in the tournament, having won it fifteen times.

Then where was the ball the other 49 minutes if not in play??
It was out of play (for example, the ball is considered out of play when someone is fouled until the ball is kicked back into play from a free kick). The game clock goes on and the ref doesn't add on time for every little thing, only when a player is injured and the game is delayed significantly.

As far as Brazil's prep for the WC-2014 goes, Copa America took place in 2011, so that for all intents and purposes is meaningless here with so much time having passed since. The confederations cup took place in Brazil in 2013. It is considered a dress rehearsal for the WC, since it takes place at the venues of the upcoming world cup. It has top teams from each continent attending, and Brazil beat Spain 3-1 in the final. But given Spain's disastrous showing this year, one has to wonder whether that was more of a writing on the wall for Spain than proof of class for the hosts. And I still think that no one really takes the Confederations Cup nearly as seriously as the World Cup.

Lack of competitive qualification was probably a blessing and a curse at the same time for them as they could have got bounced in qualifiers with Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia playing like they have been but without it Brazil came to the WC not really ready for a team like Germany. Loss of Neymar and Thiago Silva hurt them badly obviously.

Also, it should be stated. Men In Blazers have absolutely killed it this entire tournament. I hope someone gives them a TV show as a result of this.

I got a question for you soccer guys here.

WHY on earth didn't the Dutch use the same goalie in the shootout they used against Costa Rica? He stopped at least 2 shots and they won the shootout and advanced! I noticed it was a different keeper against Argentina! WHY make such a dumbass move?? If it was the same keeper they used against Costa Rica they would've had a much better chance!

Not enough subs.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-dutch- ... 25306.html
SAO PAULO – With the Netherlands-Argentina semifinal heading into a penalty shootout here Wednesday, Tim Krul's mug flashed on the Jumbotron.

The backup goalkeeper's image immediately sent the crowd into a fever pitch as the Dutch (and Brazilian) fans thought it meant Krul would be subbing into the game to be their savior once again.

It was a cruel trick. The option wasn't even there.

A visibly fatigued Netherlands team couldn't keep pace in extra time and coach Louis van Gaal had to burn his third and last substitution in the 96th minute as striker Robin van Persie simply didn't have anything left in the tank. The resulting effect: Starting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen remained on the field for the shootout, and the Argentines beat the Dutch 4-2 on penalties after a scoreless 120 minutes.

''The issue in a championship like this one is that you score one more goal than your opponent, which we didn't do,'' van Gaal said.

[Related: Argentina win shootout after first ever scoreless World Cup semifinal]

Krul was famously the hero of the Netherlands' quarterfinal win against Costa Rica on Saturday after van Gaal shrewdly devised a plan to sub him in just before the shootout. The strategy worked perfectly, and most assumed that'd be the plan moving forward: If the Netherlands pushed into a penalty-kick situation to decide the game, the shot-stopping specialist would be the man to get it done.

But with his first two substitutions burned on tactical moves and with an exhausted striker in extra time, van Gaal didn't have any choice but to use his last sub.

The coach offered little in the way of excuses after the match, reasoning that he made all of his substitutions according to how the game was playing out. Nor did he seem to have any regrets.

"I subbed in [Daryl] Janmaat for [Bruno Martins] Indi because of Indi's yellow card and because he was often slow or too late – too much space was created because of him," van Gaal said. "I subbed out [Nigel] de Jong because I didn't want to risk him getting injured and also because [Jordy] Clasie can play forward much better than him. I substituted van Persie because he was exhausted."

He continued: "Argentina is a top country with top players, but we didn't lose to them. Penalties are always just a matter of luck."

Luck may play a part, but skill and mental acuity factor in as well, and Cillessen had plenty of reason to doubt himself heading into Wednesday's penalty shootout.

Playing a starting goalkeeper in a shootout obviously isn't a damning scenario. It's what happens 99 percent of the time. But Krul's substitution in the quarterfinal against Costa Rica made the Netherlands' goalkeeping situation exponentially more complicated.

Strategically speaking, it was probably the right choice. At 6-foot-3 and with a lot of range, Krul's specialty is stopping shots from the spot. He showed how good he was on Saturday against the Costa Ricans, stopping two of the five penalties taken to advance his team to the next round of the World Cup.

But the switch also appeared to have a mental effect on Cillessen.

[Gallery: World Cup semifinal - Netherlands vs. Argentina]

On Sunday, the starting goalkeeper had said he was "angry" that his coach had taken him out just before the penalty shootout – something that was pretty evident in the moment on Saturday, as well, when the 25-year-old kicked water bottles in a tantrum on his way off the field.

"I wanted to play," Cillessen said in a news conference on Sunday. "But the coach made the decision. And that was better for the team."

The two goalkeepers were supportive of one another, with Krul even going so far as to say there was "no jealousy" within the group. At the same time, it was revealed Sunday that van Gaal and goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek had planned the strategy all along and clued in Krul just to have him mentally ready if the Costa Rica match went to a shootout. They also told him not to tell Cillessen.

Between the tactical switch and the secrecy behind it, it'd be easy to understand if Cillessen wasn't perfect mentally when Lionel Messi and Co. were lining up against him with a trip to the final on the line.

All the more reason to save a substitute and stick with the tried and true, right? Van Gaal always has his prerogatives though, and at the end of the day, the Netherlands had a chance to make the final in a penalty shootout.

But whether another late substitution of Krul would've been the difference in the Dutch playing on Sunday in the final instead of Saturday in the third-place game, we'll never know.

Just putting in a goalie isn't enough to win the kicks. And Argentina is no Costa Rica. They were brutal on penalties, and the Dutch had two horrible penalties taken by Vlaar and Schneider. I was shocked to see Vlaar come up first but apparently some Dutch players refused to go first.

With that said, Van Persie wasn't anywhere near his usual self all game, probably bothered by his injury. I think Huntelaar should've been in from the get go. That could've saved that late sub for the Dutch.

The repeat of 1986 and 1990 finals is upon us. The result will determine which repeat it actually is.

Thanks for the explanation Miles. I knew there had to be a reason because Krul was great at stopping penalties. Bad player management by the Dutch. If the starters were fit enough they should've had just ONE sub left! With Krul I think that shootout could've gone to 7 or 8 shooters with the Dutch winning!

I'll make my predictions now for the final 2 games.

Germany wins it all.

Netherlands over shellshocked and beaten up Brazil.

WHO would pick against Germany??

Congrats to Germany, they were a pleasure to watch. Pretty sure I want a Bastian Schweinsteiger jersey (he's been my favorite player on Germany the last two Cups). I feel bad for Messi. I'm sure there will be debates about how this impacts his 'legacy' or whatever stupid word they'll attach, but truth is, he's still one of, if not the best player in the world. He may still have another run at this. And Argentina wouldn't have got here without him.

Also, Gotze is going to get some serious German tail when he heads back home.

Nailed it, DM. I loved the way Germany played this WC. They always seemed to miss something. Either their D was suspect, or goalie was too gung-ho, or attack wasn't strong enough. Last WC, it was the goalie that ultimately cost them. This time around, they were as complete as a team can be. Neuer was massive, Hummels a giant in defense, Schweinsteiger a heart and muscle of that midfield and such a spread of talent up front that gelled marvelously. The best thing was that they all have played together for a while and could practically feel each other's runs. Rhythm, passion and force - that was German attack all tournament.

That said, they got very, very lucky today. Señor Higuain may go and dip himself in tar and then roll in feathers for the first half miss after a rare gift from Hummels. And that clearance from the goal line by Boateng... I think I may rewatch this game to make sure I see all of the close calls, it seems like I surely missed a few here and there.

I'm a little sad it's over but who could ask for a better birthday!!! This is the first time the WC final falls on my b-day and I will cherish this.

Happy Birthday Comrade! Great birthday present indeed!

And I'm bummed it's over, as well. It's just such a magical sporting month where all the world is focused on one event, and that event has more implications than even the Olympics (IMO). 4 more years to wait. But only a little while before the US is in the Gold Cup, World Cup Qualifying, the Confederations Cup, Copa America...we march on.

Messi sucks. I don't see what's so great about him. He missed the net so many times including shooting the ball over the net by 10 feet on the last play of the game!

Miles, you ain't lying about Gotze! He could get a room full of hot German babes if he wants it!

Messi is the best active player in the world period. You don't know squat about the game to say he sucks. Barcalona doesn't pay him around $350K a week because he sucks. He's pure class when it comes to football.
