Game 2: SHARKS at BLUES

Western Conference Final

St. Louis leads best-of-7 series 1-0

TV: 8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports

ST. LOUIS -- If the San Jose Sharks plan to switch up their lines for Game 2 on Tuesday, coach Peter DeBoer isn't tipping his hand.

The Sharks, who lost 2-1 in Game 1 to the St. Louis Blues on Sunday, could move left wing Patrick Marleau back to third-line center so DeBoer can get better balance against a deep Blues lineup that uses Jori Lehtera, Paul Stastny and Alexander Steen as the top three centers, but also uses David Backes and Patrik Berglund if necessary.

"I think when you look back at the game the next day, I think you have to get a real perspective for what happened before you do anything drastic," DeBoer said. "Again, we're not going to overreact to it. It was a winnable game, [we] probably had more quality chances than they did. If we're coming out of that game having been dominated possession, chance, weren't getting anything going offensively, then you look to shuffle the deck. But I don't think that was the case."

DeBoer has the flexibility to use Marleau the way the Blues use Steen, who has centered Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko in recent games.

"It's game to game," DeBoer said. "Two Patrick Marleaus, one plays center, one on the third line ... I think we've been effective with three centers down the middle, [Logan] Couture, Marleau and [Joe] Thornton. We've also been very effective with him on the wing.

"I think two things come into play. Are you better as a team, and is the individual better? That's the balance. I'm not here to make Patrick Marleau feel good. We're here to win games and we're going to put him wherever we feel we have to win games."

Sharks team scope: Forward Matt Nieto (undisclosed) continues to be day-to-day. Nieto, who has not played since Game 6 of the second round against the Nashville Predators, is expected to be ready to return at some point in the series. "I don't know, he's day-to-day," DeBoer said when asked if Nieto could play Tuesday. "I think he is skating today. We'll see how he feels [Tuesday]." The Sharks are 4-11 all-time when losing Game 1, and 0-5 all-time in a series after winning a seven-game series. The Sharks took the day off Monday.

Blues team scope: St. Louis was also off after what coach Ken Hitchcock called a tiring Game 1. "From a compete on the puck standpoint, these are draining games and our players were tired [Sunday] night," Hitchcock said Monday. "It was more mentally getting used to having to play this type of team. They're not a lot different than L.A. They're big, they're strong, they're determined, they check well. I think any time you play a team that checks as well as they do, we're playing a mirror image of ourselves and it's going to take some getting used to because we frustrated a lot of teams all year. And they're able to do that too because their game, they are committed. They're 100 percent all-in committed, and we're just going to have to learn to play through it to beat them." Goalie Brian Elliott improved to 4-0 with a 1.29 goals-against average and .954 save percentage in five career postseason appearances against the Sharks.
ST. LOUIS -- The San Jose Sharks got just three power plays in their Game 1 loss to open the Western Conference finals, and no call when Joe Thornton's bushy beard got tugged on by St. Louis Blues captain David Backes in the first period.

Coach Peter DeBoer didn't make a big deal about it Monday. Still, he believes his team deserved a lot more chances with the man advantage, and is hopeful referees will have a firmer grip in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

"St. Louis is one of the most-penalized teams in the league, regular season and playoffs," DeBoer said. "They need to call the game accordingly. Need to make them pay a price for being the most-penalized team in the power play, which we didn't last night."

The Blues were the ninth-most penalized team in the regular season and they've got the second-most minutes in the postseason, although they've played more games than anybody.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock, informed of those comments, wanted to know whether DeBoer was "whining for calls."

"Well, we were told not to whine for calls, so we're not going to whine for calls," Hitchcock said. "We'll play the game, we'll play it the right way, we'll play it honest, but we'll play it hard, let the refs decide."

Five minor penalties were called, three on the Blues, and there were none in the second period when the Sharks were at their best, ringing up a 16-6 shots advantage but coming up empty and falling behind for good on Jori Lehtera's unassisted goal.

Thornton shrugged off the beard-tugging incident, saying it might have actually helped him.

"It's all good for me," Thornton said. "I think it gets you more involved in the game."

Backes joked off the tactic, too.

"Yeah, just seeing whose was real and making sure they weren't glued on," Backes said.

Blues players spent little time celebrating their hard-earned 2-1 victory, showing up to the rink to dissect areas in need of improvement before sitting down with Hitchcock.

"Everyone knows this was kind of like a heavyweight fight, round one, just jabbing a little bit," defenseman Carl Gunnarsson said. "Now we know how they play. We'll make some adjustments and off we go."

The Sharks weren't disappointed in their effort, just the bottom line.

Both teams seemed to sense they might be in for a long haul, perhaps a seven-game marathon.

The Blues have twice gone the distance, putting them in the conference final for the first time since 2001. The Sharks dispatched the Kings in five games in the first round but needed seven to eliminate the Predators and earn a first trip to the conference final in five years.

Entering Game 2, the Sharks trail in a series for the first time this postseason.

"I think this team has shown short memory," Thornton said. "Get the last game out of your head and focus on the next game. We'll see if we can do it again tomorrow."

The Blues took the opener despite getting outshot 32-23, relying heavily on another standout effort from goalie Brian Elliott. He's 4-0 with a 1.29 goals-against average and .954 save percentage in five career playoff appearances against the Sharks.

"Whenever it seems like he's down and out and we may give up what we call a bad scoring chance, he has a knack for really just working to get back and getting a piece of it," defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. "It's not only in games, we see him do it every day in practice."

Backes scored his seventh goal, matching sharpshooter Vladimir Tarasenko for the team lead, with his fourth deflection of the postseason. He has 13 points, matching his career postseason total from 2006-07, and also was credited for 11 hits, most ever by a Blues player in a postseason game.

The Sharks were shut out on the power play for the first time since Game 2 of the second round.

"We stepped up to the challenge," Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. "It was a big topic for us all week."

DeBoer said the team isn't going to "overreact" to power play failures or anything else.

"It was a winnable game," DeBoer said. "We probably had more quality chances than they did."

I think the Sharks feel pretty good even after losing Game 1 - we've been there too. So, what I'd love to see is us beat them tonight in a way that further chips away at their confidence.

But I'll take any kind of win and be happy.

I've been repeatedly thinking about what David Backes' said a few days ago - "One of the four teams left will play in Cup Finals, so why not us?"

I agree...why not US?! Then, I have to back way off and calm myself down so that I can actually function at work.

Everyone's gotta be sick of seeing me wear my Blues gear. Got the old school 80's sweater on today.

Let's go to San Jose up 2-0. Don't give them home ice advantage.

What game was he watching? I thought they called more cheap penalties Sunday than they did all playoffs against us. That weak slash by Ott in the 1st and hook in the 3rd by Stastny were not called in the first two rounds. Don't remember the others.

Yeah, I dunno either. I didn't notice any more missed calls than normal.
It comes off as whining anyway...they still had 3 PP's, which is more than we got...and they came up empty.
Their PP is very good...it only makes sense that they'd want to be on it as much as possible...and if he feels that bitching about the officiating will get them more calls...more power to him. But that doesn't change the fact he is dead wrong about how game #1 was called.
It's all posturing and trying to get an edge. And I guess it's possible that he is saying this so the Blues might be mindful of their play and not be as aggressive to stay out of the box if they feel the officials will call more in game #2...I dunno.

That "slash" called on Ott was the weakest penalty I've seen called all postseason. It looked straight out of October 2005.

Agreed it was a weak call - but this is where league reputation can come back to bite a player. Reaves would be another with a short leash by the refs. Everyone has a player or two on their team like this. It just means they have to be extra careful with being disciplined out there.

a deep Blues lineup that uses Jori Lehtera, Paul Stastny and Alexander Steen as the top three centers, but also uses David Backes and Patrik Berglund if necessary
David Backes = 179 playoff faceoffs

Alexander Steen = 69 playoff faceoffs
Steen, who has centered Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko in recent games.
News to me.

This is from ESPN, isn't it? Or Yahoo? Good to see those guys earning their checks, as usual.

Oh yeah, just win the game. Any score will do for me...

It's actually from ESPN and Yahoo...it's the AP article and it's the same on both pages. I get SQL errors half the time when I try to copy from Yahoo so just resorted to ESPN today.
