BLUES (8-3-1) AT BLACKHAWKS (7-5-0)

TV: NBCSN, TVA Sports

Season series: The St. Louis Blues won three of five games against the Chicago Blackhawks last season, including twice in the final week by 2-1 each time. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo led the Blues with five assists. Former Blackhawks forward Kris Versteeg had three goals and five points.

Blues team scope: St. Louis has four players out with injuries, but defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk (lower body) is questionable. Shattenkirk has missed nine games. The Blues are 2-1-0 in the first three of a five-game stretch against Western Conference opponents. Goalie Brian Elliott, who hasn't played since Oct. 24 against the New York Islanders, will start. Elliott is 4-0-0 against Western Conference teams with a 2.01 goals-against average and .918 save percentage. "We're going to have to turn the page in a hurry," captain David Backes said after the Blues' 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday. "We've done a [heck of a] job so far with some great players out. They're not coming back [Wednesday], so we're going to have to keep doing it." Forward Vladimir Tarasenko returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing one game with an undisclosed injury and had 20:47 of ice time.

Blackhawks team scope: Chicago is 6-1-0 at United Center and looking for its seventh straight home victory. The Blackhawks, already without defenseman Duncan Keith (right meniscal tear) will also be without forward Marian Hossa (lower-body injury) for a second straight game. Defenseman Brent Seabrook didn't practice Tuesday, but will play. Corey Crawford will start in net. Chicago coach Joel Quenneville is sticking with the same lineup he used in the Blackhawks' 4-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday, so Ryan Garbutt will take Hossa's spot at right wing on the top line. He had an assist against the Kings and used his speed effectively. "He's a 'go, go,' guy and I really liked the way he's played the last few games," Quenneville said. "He's made some nice plays offensively with the puck as well."
The Chicago Blackhawks have been much better at home than on the road. That's something the St. Louis Blues are all too familiar with.

The Blackhawks look to extend their home winning streak to seven games Wednesday night when these Central Division rivals meet for the first time this season.

Chicago (7-5-0) followed the raising of its latest Stanley Cup banner by losing 3-2 to the New York Rangers on Oct. 7. The Blackhawks haven't lost at the United Center since, outscoring opponents 17-6 during seven straight victories.

Their current streak includes a 9-3 scoring edge after the second period, including three unanswered goals in Monday's 4-2 win over Los Angeles.

"Going into the third down a goal, I think that's a big confidence boost for us, knowing we can come back, we can score goals," said Patrick Kane, who had one goal and one assist in the final 20 minutes. "We've been struggling to score 5-on-5 and we had three.

"That's a big step in the right direction. Hopefully it gives us some confidence."

Hosting St. Louis (8-3-1) should give the Blackhawks plenty of confidence. They're 14-1-2 in their last 17 matchups in Chicago, including playoffs. However, the most recent matchup there resulted in a 2-1 loss April 5.

Kane, who missed that meeting with a broken clavicle, has 29 points in 24 overall home meetings with the Blues, including six in the last three. He's collected 12 of his 16 points this season at home, recording at least one in each of the seven games.

Kane has four goals and six assists during a seven-game overall point streak.

St. Louis is opening a four-game road trip after concluding a 3-1-1 homestand with a 3-0 loss to the Kings on Tuesday.

The power play again was an issue for the Blues, who went scoreless on four opportunities and have come up empty on 21 attempts over the past six games. That unit is operating at a 9.5 success rate (4 for 42) to rank 29th in the league.

Reversing that trend will be difficult since the Blackhawks have killed off 16 of 17 opposing power plays at home.

"I've been here for 10 years and it's no secret; it's shots, traffic, rebounds and dirty goals," captain David Backes said. "I just think we're looking a little too pretty, and we gotta get back to hammering the puck, finding some rebounds, taking the goalie's eyes away."

Backes had a power-play goal at Chicago on April 5, but he has three goals and one assist in his last 11 games there. He's also off to a slow start to this season with two goals and two assists.

Vladimir Tarasenko leads the team with six goals, but he's only scored once on 24 shots and is a minus-4 in the past five games. He returned Tuesday after sitting out Saturday's win over Minnesota with a lower-body injury.

Brian Elliott is expected to start in net after Jake Allen made 31 saves Tuesday. Elliott is 4-0-1 with a 2.18 goals-against average this season, and 1-3-1 with a 2.54 GAA in five career starts at Chicago.

He won't have to deal with Marian Hossa, who is out for a second straight game with a lower-body injury.

Prediction #1:

Hawks 3
Blues 1

Prediction #2:

Nyghtwynd makes his 2015-16 debut, lamenting the ineptitude of Hitch and Army for not addressing any of this teams needs for offensive creativity or depth and how it's the same old Blues who either won't make the playoffs or if they do, bow out ungracefully in 4 to 6 games to a far superior team.

Please play well. Please.
The slow sloppiness needs to stop.
People need to shoot instead of forcing passes.

Sent from my R2 unit.

Jeez what a weird start.

Crappy goal against, floater goal for us and then give up a penalty goal.

Ok, we've spotted them 3 goals in the first 6.5 minutes. This should be interesting.

After 1 period...

Well... not all of those were Elliott/Allen's fault. That Dano goal off the turnover... ZERO urgency from Gunnarson. None. He may as well have been playing pond hockey with his dad out on the back pond. Behind the net out for a Sunday stroll, gets swarmed, puck pops out, oh shocker it's a goal.

If I'm Hitch in the locker room it's decision time: You guys want to get embarrassed out here and have these dumb ass Hawks and their fans who you supposedly hate so much just laugh you out of the building or you want to wake up and play with some pride.

Clean it up guys, come on let's go.

Great kill! Too bad Bouwmeester couldn't score on his toe drag drive to the net.

I made about 10 posts for THIS game on The Kings' game thread from last night. It's hell getting old!
