Acquiring what would be the, what?, 5th D of 7 when Shattenkirk comes back? And he's got a concussion? For a highly rated, if very young, C prospect? And it puts the Blues well over the cap?

I'm with you on that. While Blues didn't give up a lot, they gave up something and what they are getting in return is a highly questionable rental with no predictable playoff performance.

While he will be OUR 5th DMan, I doubt he's a typical 5th DMan. I think he's more of a top 4 guy that we'll have in our 3rd pairing which has some value.

I'm curious about the cap implications. According to NHL Numbers, we have like $1.0xx in cap space available. We traded no salary and added a player making $4M, so my first thought is that we're now $3M over the cap. That could be where Berglund and Cracknell come into play. Or maybe they're eating part of his salary. Maybe because it's coming later in the season, it's not a full $4M cap hit? I don't really know.

If Michalek plays this season, we don't get a pick. If he doesn't play this season, we get the pick.

We are only on the hook for the pro-rated portion of the deal...what's left to pay him.

There is approximately 25% of the season left, and they are eating 50% of that remaining ~1 million, which means we are getting a rental at about 500k for the rest of the year.

Again, we are NOT over the cap from this deal.

Across the board, this trade is a win. Unless Letunov becomes amazing. But we get D depth, a pick, and 50% of his salary off of our hands for a 19 year old in the USHL. I'm 100% okay with that.
