BLUES (38-18-4) at JETS (31-20-11)

TV: FS-MW, TSN3

Season series: The St. Louis Blues defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on Nov. 23 in Winnipeg. The Blues' Alexander Steen and Alex Pietrangelo each had two assists.

Blues team scope: St. Louis starts a five-game road trip after a 5-2 home loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday. A six-game road trip in mid-March will follow; the Blues will play 11 of their next 14 games on the road. St. Louis went 1-3-0 on its homestand and allowed 14 goals in the four games. The Blues are nine points behind the first-place Nashville Predators in the Central Division but hold a three-point lead on the third-place Chicago Blackhawks while having a game in hand.

The St. Louis power play is 3-for-20 in its past 10 games.

The Blues had an optional practice Wednesday before flying to Winnipeg. Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk (lower body) is weeks away from returning to the lineup.

Jets team scope: Winnipeg practiced Wednesday after a 4-2 home win against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Afterward the Jets acquired left wing Jiri Tlusty from the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade for two draft picks. Tlusty had 13 goals and 10 assists in 52 games with Carolina. Tlusty, 26, could play on the second line, which would allow coach Paul Maurice to shift Dustin Byfuglien back to defense. Maurice coached Tlusty with Carolina and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

To make room for Tlusty on the roster, the Jets placed right wing Blake Wheeler (lower body) on injured reserve. On Tuesday, Wheeler missed his first game since the 2011-12 season. Wheeler's absence likely means right wing Michael Frolik will remain on the top line with center Bryan Little and left wing Andrew Ladd.

Uncharacteristic mistakes have pushed St. Louis further behind in the Central Division race, and the Blues realize a quick fix is needed with the playoffs approaching.

They'll have plenty of chances to test their mettle against the Winnipeg Jets before the postseason.

St. Louis looks to avoid a third consecutive defeat by kicking off a five-game trip with a sixth straight win over the Jets on Thursday night.

The Blues (38-18-4) sit nine points back of first-place Nashville after dropping three of four on their homestand. They're on the brink of dropping three straight for the first time since a four-game skid from Dec. 18-27 after falling 4-2 to Pittsburgh on Saturday and 5-2 to Montreal on Tuesday.

St. Louis is three points ahead with a game in hand on third-place Chicago, but coach Ken Hitchcock is more concerned with finding a solution to his club's recent woes.

"We're a team that's made a lot of great inroads on playing a certain way, and now we're not interested in playing the way that's been successful here," Hitchcock said. "We want to play a different way right now, and it's really, really hurting us.

"Whatever is going on, we have not paid the healthy respect to what's important for us to win hockey games. Not one bit. It's something we need to address - now."

The Blues have played much better on the road lately, winning seven of eight. After facing the Jets (31-20-11), they take on Edmonton on Saturday before dates with Vancouver and Philadelphia - both battling for playoff position. The trip ends March 7 in Toronto.

"We have a tough road trip now where we're going to play tough teams in their buildings," said David Backes, who scored against the Canadiens. "We need to bear down and play our game and get wins."

Backes scored in a 4-2 victory over Winnipeg on Nov. 23 in the first meeting to help St. Louis win its fifth straight in the series. These clubs meet four times before the end of the regular season as the Jets push toward just their second playoff appearance in the club's 15-year history.

Rookie Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves to help Winnipeg snap a two-game skid with a 4-2 win over Dallas on Tuesday. He's started four of the last five games, but he's not concerned about playing time.

"Right now going down the stretch, the only thing that matters is getting the team in the playoffs," said Hutchinson, who is 18-7-4 with a 2.35 goals-against average in 28 starts and two relief efforts. "So whether it's myself or (Ondrej Pavelec) playing, as long as we can win games and get the team in the playoffs, that's the only thing that matters right now."

Coach Paul Maurice has been impressed with Hutchinson, but he still appears to be going on a game-by-game basis with his goaltenders. Pavelec started the first meeting with the Blues and stopped 25 shots.

"You know it's too early (to ask who is starting Thursday)," Maurice said. "If you ask me (Wednesday), I'll tell you it's too early for that."

Blake Wheeler played 227 consecutive games before sitting out Tuesday and has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Michael Frolik played in Wheeler's spot on the top line with Bryan Little and Andrew Ladd.

The Jets addressed Wheeler's injury Wednesday by acquiring forward Jiri Tlusty from Carolina for a 2016 third-round pick and conditional sixth-rounder in this summer's draft. It's unclear if Tlusty, who has 13 goals and 10 assists in 52 games this season, will play in this contest.

Jake Allen made 28 saves for the Blues in the first matchup, but it's unclear if he or Brian Elliott will be in net for this meeting.

There will be much rejoicing if that is the case.

Worries me that all Hitch ever seems to have in response to problems is: moar buy-inz!!!1 I hope he has some, you know, tactical ideas to suggest to the squad as well.

Also, I hope he doesn't ride them too hard like he did chasing the President's Trophy last year. The division is virtually gone-we're down 9 points with 22 games to play; we gained all of 3 points on Nashville during the run in January. There aren't enough games left unless the Predators collapse. Also, Chicago looks less and less likely to catch up. Focus needs to be on getting the play right.

I think the points about buy in are the key here, though. The team seems to run long stretches of lazy play and people not keeping the structure.

When Chicago is buzzing what is glaringly obvious is how disciplined they are defensively. Same is true for LA when they are on their game. Those teams are ALWAYS in the right spots and shut down other teams with team defense and punishing forechecking, which they then turn into offense. Go watch their shape and you see a team that knows where to go and what to do before it happens, and this leads to wins in a big, big way.

The Blues play short stretches of this, a couple shifts or so, but then seem to let off the gas or forget what's going on. It's about trusting the other players to do their job, doing yours well, and letting the game happen. Lately we seem to be chasing, standing, or some mixture of both rather than dictating the play.

I don't know if that's a lack of coaching consistency or a lack of player buy in, or limitations in the talent of the skaters - no idea from me. I do know it needs to get sorted quickly if this team is making a deep run in the Spring.

I would like to see them handle their business tonight in convincing fashion as a first step.

Hitch was PISSED after the last game and he had every right to be. That team didn't look like they wanted to play hockey and they got roughed up pretty well. Allen made many outstanding saves when he was hung out to dry by the team, so I can't pin that loss on him. We should have been dominating the game 200 ft from his net rather than being three strides behind the odd man break.

Edit: Backes/Steen/Oshie isn't broken so please don't try to fix it. If Bergs can't get his shit in a pile, then he should sit in the press box not get promoted to the top line. If Stastny needs a better wing then find one, please.

Not saying players don't need to commit, they do, and we haven't seen that lately thus the bad play.

But it's also not for a coach to stomp his feet, stick his fingers in his ears and do nothing but demand more commitment to a system that the players are telling him indirectly isn't right for them. Which is what I believe is and has been happening-look at the difference in personnel between the Blues and the Bruins or the Kings. And yet that's how he wants the team to play, all the time. Big surprise, everyone looks gassed and checked out late in the season...again.

The Blues defense has problems with consistency and discipline but they're also asked to play in a high-demand system with which other teams have become very familiar. Maybe if the offense were more possession-oriented you wouldn't get these yawning gaps opening up between forwards and defense that allow teams to push two and three forecheckers deep into the Blues' end while the D has no outlet. I don't think Pietrangelo and Bouwmeester have just become bad players, I think they play in a system that has been thoroughly solved by good teams and in which it's going to be very hard for anyone to succeed against quality opposition.

I don't dislike Bergs for any particular reason. In fact, by all accounts, he's a very likable guy. But we're just not getting enough production in return for his salary, and that being the case I am fine getting him off our books to make room for other guys. If he does get traded, I wish him the best and I hold no animosity toward him. If he stays, pick up the damn pace, buddy.

Oh, and, 2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

I don't really feel like going back and checking right now, but what's been the average shots/game since Shatty went down? Getting lucky by scoring on 33% of the shots against Boston is one thing, but 5 shots so far, 25 minutes in against Winnipeg, this is atrocious. At the risk of sounding like the morons at the game who scream "SHOOOOOT!" I think they need to start shooting more.

Agreed. It would also help if we could actually get the pucks on net instead of high, wide, or having the puck jump over our sticks.

Hey, 2 points is 2 points, especially against a division rival. Good game by Elliott.

They could have shot a few more times. But they are missing the net an awful lot...namely Tarasenko.
Hit the damn net.
I get that the other team is getting in the shooting lanes...but every team deals with that shit. Get the pucks on net. That's all...thanks.

This game was an absolute grind to get 2 points. We got severely outplayed in the 1st period but came back to even things out a bit. Brian Elliott is a mad man betwixt the pipes. It would be great if the offense would give him a little help in a game like this. Nonetheless, it's 2 points, Nashville lost, so praise hey-soos.

That was a hell of a game last night.
They said on the air that is was like a playoff game, and they were right. A very hard fought and much needed 2 pts.

It's a little concerning that we are getting outplayed in the first period pretty regularly now...and then we turn things around a bit in the 2nd & 3rd.
That shit needs to stop.

Speaking of which, that Winnipeg crowd is going to be AMAZING if/when they make it in the playoffs this year.

Not vintage stuff, but a good 2pts on the road against a playoff team playing playoff hockey. Would be nice to have a D like Byfuglien or Myers, have to say. And yeah, let's hit the net guys.

Glad Elliott's good game wasn't ruined by whatever the hell that was that he did in the shootout.

That was a fun game to watch and it looked like the ice was fantastic. Pucks stayed pretty flat and the ice was a fast track all night.

I loved the physical play and the speed... good stuff.

I am happy we didn't play our best and escaped with the points. Well done on the road.

Elliot was superb between the pipes last night.
