BLUES (33-13-4) at SABRES (15-33-3)

TV: FS-MW, MSG-B, BELL TV

Season series: The St. Louis Blues defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-1 in the teams' only meeting this season Nov. 11. Jori Lehtera had a natural hat trick and Joakim Lindstrom scored twice. Jaden Schwartz had three assists and Vladimir Tarasenko had two.

Blues team scope: The Blues matched a franchise record with a point in 12 straight games (11-0-1) with a 2-1 overtime victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday. The Blues, who have won six in a row, were 11-0-1 Nov. 24-Dec. 26, 2000.

Schwartz scored the game-winner Tuesday and Tarasenko tied the game with 3:10 remaining to keep the Blues' streak alive. But the play of goalie Brian Elliott was imperative, since the Blues were outshot 31-18, a season-low.

"He was really good," Tarasenko said of Elliott, who is 8-0-1 his past 10 starts. "This is not surprising us. We're really lucky to have a goalie like this on our team."

St. Louis won despite not getting a point from Alexander Steen, David Backes or T.J. Oshie for the first time in 16 games. They had 63 points among them the past 15 games.

Sabres team scope: The Sabres won for the first time since Dec. 27 when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Tuesday to close out a five-game trip. The win for Buffalo ended a 14-game losing streak, which was one loss shy of tying the third-longest in NHL history set by the 1930-31 Philadelphia Quakers.

"We've got a lot of proud guys in this room, guys that had been on good teams, and it's one of those things that no one wants to be a part of and it's nice that we were able to get that one behind us," said captain Brian Gionta, who scored the eventual game-winner late in the first period. Goalie Jhonas Enroth made 34 saves.

During their 14-game losing streak, the Sabres were outscored 61-21.

The Sabres have lost five in a row on home ice and have not won in regulation at home since Dec. 11 (nine games).

The game against the Blues opens a five-game homestand.

I'm kind of worried about this one. With a game tomorrow, I hope they don't look past what should probably be an easy opponent. Buffalo lost a ton of games and then beats a very good opponent in Montreal, so they have to be on some sort of an emotional high after that. Hoping Allen plays tonight and then obviously Ells the rest of this "3 in 4" set, but either way I don't think this will be the blowout we got the last time they met.

So that begs an interesting question- with 3 games in 4 days, do you play Elliott in the 1st game so he gets more rest before the 3rd game (vs Chicago)? Or do you play Allen in the 1st game (due to easiest opponent) and let Elliott play both Friday and Sunday?

I'd play Allen tonight. A day off between Friday's and Sunday's games should be enough for Elliott to be fresh.

Also not too worried about this game. We don't lose to cellar teams very often, so I doubt we'll look past tonight.

I'm hoping they remember how chickenshit the Sabres played at the end of the game last time and come out ready to crack some skulls.

I think Elliott will play-gives him more rest between games (remember, Elliott has only ever started more than 40 games once in a season-even with the injury he's started 31 this term) and #1's numbers against Buffalo, especially in Buffalo, are absurdly good.

I hear you but I'd be more worried about it if they hadn't won that-I never like playing teams that have lost a billion in a row because, as we all know, every team will eventually win a game. Glad they got it out of their system. Now they need to get back to chasing McDavid/Eichel...

I'd forgotten about all the shenanigans the last game vs these guys. I hope they didn't forget.

Also Allen tonight because it's the easier opponent and maybe that can jumpstart his confidence. The backfire, of course, is if he starts and loses. Goodbye confidence.

I'm happy with the decision to start Allen. Next issue: Berglund and Lehtera... still out?

Edit: Just read the Yahoo preview. I didn't realize Lehtera was out with a concussion. That kind of really sucks. Just saying.

Yeah, no Lehtera which sucks. Hopefully it's not long.

Berglund is a GTD, but seems like he'll likely play.

Well congratulations to Rattie on his first NHL point. Let's try to put up more than one goal on these jokers though.

Yeah cool stuff, Stewart looks real strong tonight. Hopefully we can keep him off the score sheet for the 3rd.

Another W. Franchise record 13 straight games with at least 1 point. And Nashville was getting their ass handed to them last

Spit some drool on my ipad on that Tank goal. Sabres brought their A game. Blues got the job done. Pretty good show by Allen.

Just got home.
For some reason my DVR recorded an alternate station that had the Blues game on but it was blacked out. So it didn't record the game.
I just saw the highlights on Gamecenter Live.
Looked like Allen played real well...good to see.

So....how did we play?

On the bright side, I get to watch the end of the Anaheim - Nashville game...Ducks are currently up 4-1. Nashville just scored a few minutes ago.

This just looks nice. New franchise record for consecutive games with a point. 12-0-1.

And we were like 2 seconds away from getting to a shootout vs. Detroit...and Detroit is horrible in shoouts and we are pretty good...so that OTL was very, very close to possibly being a W.

Honestly, we didn't play that great considering the opponent. I'd say we looked a little better than we did against TB though; at least we were getting more shots. They weren't bad, but not great by any means. When it was 0-0 and 1-0 Allen made some big saves. There was a breakaway and we had a few turnovers that resulted in good chances for them. Without Allen it could have easily gone the other way.

I'll take it though. They aren't all going to be pretty.

Jake Allen was fantastic (as I'm sure you saw on the highlights). The Blues dominated possession but the quality of chances weren't there for long stretches. I've gotta hand it to Buffalo, they've played us tough both times this season. Hitch rolled out a line of Reaves/Goc/Ott to start the game and I thought there was going to be a tussle, but nothing happened. I was surprised at the lack of physicality coming off the last time these two teams met. 2 points, move on to 'lumbus.
