Alexander Steen provided an instant lift for the St. Louis Blues upon his return from a brief absence, and they hope it's a sign of things to come.

He'll look to lead the Blues to a fourth straight win Saturday night when they visit the Colorado Avalanche.

Steen scored two goals and added an assist in Thursday's 6-3 home win over the Islanders after missing two games with a lower-body injury. His first goal came 5:58 in while his second broke a 2-all tie at the 4:32 mark of the third period and was the first of four over the final 20 minutes for St. Louis (19-8-2).

Steen is operating at a less explosive pace this season with seven goals in 27 games after scoring a career-high 33 in 68 contests in 2013-14, but perhaps Thursday's performance can serve as a spark. Steen had one point in four games before being sidelined.

The Blues are 10-2-1 when Steen has at least one point.

"He's such a skilled player," goaltender Jake Allen said. "He's such a workhorse leader for us. He can do it all. It just goes to show how good of a player he actually is. He's an underrated player in the league, but we know how valuable he is to our team."

Steen has three goals and one assist in his last four games against Colorado.

Allen had 25 saves in his first action since being pulled after he gave up three goals in the first period of last Saturday's 6-4 win over the Islanders.

"I wanted to just get back on track," Allen said. "Just to feel good about myself again. I felt very in control tonight and kept the game simple."

Colorado (10-13-6) ended a four-game skid with Thursday's 4-3 shootout win against Winnipeg. Jarome Iginla and Ryan O'Reilly scored in the final 7:05 of regulation to force overtime.

Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist, giving him three of each over his last six games.

The Avalanche have won four of their last five that have gone past regulation after dropping their first five such games. They were an NHL-best 15-8 in shootouts or overtime in 2013-14.

"We were resilient and it was a nice comeback," coach Patrick Roy said. "To win in the shootout was good for us. You always hope a game like this will bring confidence and a belief in ourselves."

Tyson Barrie's 20 points are tied for the team lead, but he has none in three straight games and is without a point in eight career matchups with St. Louis.

Nathan MacKinnon's five-game point drought ties his longest as a rookie last season, though he has a goal and an assist in each of his last two meetings with the Blues.

Colorado scored two third-period goals to force overtime at St. Louis on Nov. 1, but Joakim Lindstrom was the only player to score in the shootout in the Blues' 3-2 win - their fifth in six meetings. Vladimir Tarasenko had both of St. Louis' goals and has five goals and three assists in his last seven games.

The Blues are seeking their first-ever three-game winning streak in Colorado.

WTF? That's a 10pm start time for me. :x

Guaranteed I won't see the end, so the boys better build up a good enough lead early.

2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

HAHA! YES! If there is one coach in the league that I would love to see react to the Blues putting up 8, it's Roy. I never realized what a headcase he was when he was playing.

Have a feeling we're going to rip the Avs apart. Just a feeling.

Avs - 2
Blues - 6
“It makes no difference what men think of war, said the judge. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner. That is the way it was and will be. That way and not some other way.”

45 more minutes. I am so restless for some reason!

Blues - 8 (90 SOG, Avs go through both goalies twice cause they get exhausted and need a break)
Avs - 1 (29 SOG, just to make sure our goalie gets a high sv%)

I hate these 10 pm starts. Oh well, I'll get the score in the AM. I will predict that someone we don't expect to score a goal will score a goal. Will it be Ott? Will it be Allen? Who knows .....

I actually have a free night. The older one is on a date, and the younger is at a bat mitzvah party until 11. So I hope to catch 1st and second and maybe part of the third.

And Ott continues to stand for 0 Total Tallies. What's his exact purpose on this team anyway?

He seems to draw a fair amount of penalties. That doesn't make him super valuable or anything, but it's some value for a 4th line guy I guess.

Getting under the other team's skin. Had to watch NHL network last night and it was the Avs broadcast. The bench guy for the Avs TV crew kept talking about the never-ending yapping between Ott and whomever was on the end of the Avs bench. It went on the entire game with the "conversation" never stopping whenever Ott was on the bench. Apparently, he is really good at talking trash and was all over McLeod after the hit on Shattenkirk in the first which should have been boarding. Of course, McLeod is a Clutterbuck-like chicken who won't back up his actions when actually challenged.

Nice win with that shot by Oshie. What cracks me up is how little these other team's tv guys seem to know about their opponents. "Oshie has been off to a real slow start." They didn't mention the games lost to injury until after Oshie had scored the game-winner, then looked at his stats the last 5 games. Oshie is coming on strong after recovering from the Scandela hit.

As far as priority goes...scoring goals is like 20th on the list for Ott.

I think Ott has been fine on the 4th line. He stirs stuff up, gets under the skin of players...a lot, throws his body around, etc.
I'm not sure why people would expect him to be scoring goals and consider him worthless if he isn't. That doesn't make any sense to me because that isn't what he is being paid to do.

I just don't like that we're paying him $2.6 million cap hit a season to do it. That's astronomical, in my humble opinion, to be paying a 4th line player. Hated it the day we signed him, still hate it, can't wait until he's gone. He's not contributing to this team even a fifth of what he's being paid.

He's making almost four times as much money as Chris Porter is this season. Just dwell on that for a moment.

edit: AND there was no demand for the guy. We didn't sign him until after Sobotka left. It wasn't like we were in a bidding war with anyone else (that I'm aware of anyway, and if so WHY!?), it's not Jay McClement in the prime of his career who's a faceoff specialist and one of the best PK guys in the game. It's f**king Steve Ott. We overpay to make him feel good about himself or what? I don't blame Ott for that: good for him, he made out like a bandit on this team. I'm pissed at front office. Still makes absolutely no sense to me. No 4th liner in this league should be making more than $1, maybe $2 million a season TOPS. And lone and behold we're going to have a tight salary cap next year, but DON'T WORRY FOLKS! WE GOT STEVE OTT LOCKED UP!!!! And nobody is acquiring that albatross contract.

I'm with Waukee here. I'm sure Ott serves a purpose, chirping with the opponents or whatever it may be, but chirping with the opponents isn't worth $2.6 mil. You can ill afford to have a 4th line that doesn't really contribute much of anything. I'd say that as far as getting under the skin of the opposition, our 4th line is fine, but from a production and competitive standpoint our 4th line may be one of the worst in the NHL. Ott's worth to this team is not justified by his crazy salary.
