Re: Who would you rather have?
Depends on who we already have on the team. If we already have guys who kill penalties and shut down the opposing team's top line, I see no problem with a guy who may be a defensive liability, but puts up massive points.
If, on the other hand, we are having defensive troubles, are giving up 4 goals a game, then I would rather have the shutdown guy who doesn't put up as many points.
Hard to choose the attributes of only one guy when a team is made up of 20 players, who [hopefully] compliment each other.

Re: Who would you rather have?
I voted for 60 points, +20.
2 reasons:
1. If I had to field a team of nothing but clones of one of them, I'd take 60P, +20 over 80P, -35.
2. While there's a decent jump from 60 to 80 points, there's an astronomical jump from -35 to +20.
All that said, I think there's room for both on a team. They just fulfill different roles. You need a guy or two that can score a lot. If you don't, well, see Blues playoffs last several years. But, I'd rather have like 7 +20 guys and 2 80P guys in my top 9 forwards than the other way around.

Re: Who would you rather have?
Offense wins style points, defense wins championships. Of course our severe lack of offense the last couple of playoffs would actually serve to disprove that adage. But still, I'd rather have the guy who wasn't a defensive liability. Then again, if we're winning every game 7-5 that's certainly entertaining. +/- is an extremely telling stat.

Are we voting for 2013-2014 versions of Ovie and Oshie by any chance?

Re: Who would you rather have?
I would have had Ovie a few years back (but then the blues didn't have any proven scorers). Now, with the current team, he would be more of a distraction, and the need for a pure scorer is diminished with Tarasenko in the line-up. That said, Ovie is an outlier among the 80+ scorers, with most of those guys in the positive +/- territory (at least by single digits). Which makes me wonder about the Capitals system overall more than Ovie. The entire team's +/- was pretty damn bad last year.cprice12 wrote:Ding!ComradeT wrote:Are we voting for 2013-2014 versions of Ovie and Oshie by any chance?

Re: Who would you rather have?
A simply because we don't have an A (Well, we do if you say Frank and Lehtera may not be that far behind, but we won't know how far that goes points-wise until the end of the year.). The one thing that's zapped us in the playoffs is not having that brand of extra-gear, so having someone who gurantees that kind of point production might be one of the missing pieces of the puzzle to get us to the next level. Honestly, we have a ton of people that aren't too far off of that B range.
In regards to popularity contests between Ovie and Oshie, mind that neither team they have been on has won a Cup, so to me that doesn't say much.

Re: Who would you rather have?
I'd definitely have option 2, although option 1 can be infinitely more exciting at times. But it does really depend on the makeup of the team. If you have a team full of option 2's (as the Blues do), an option 1 on the squad won't hurt as much.
But the answer I really want is a player who combines the best of both options 1 and 2...because I'm thinking that's the trajectory #91 is on.

Re: Who would you rather have?
Second thoughts: I would definitely take an 80+ scorer since it's really hard to see anyone with that point total having that +/- playing with the Blues. Maybe not Ovie as he's old.ComradeT wrote:I would have had Ovie a few years back (but then the blues didn't have any proven scorers). Re: Who would you rather have?
It's not secret that you need to be responsible in your own end to pay for Hitch. I don't see us having too many 80+ pt players in that system, but having more 60+ that play defense is what this team is all about.

Re: Who would you rather have?
Who's the goof who voted for the 80 pt scorer who sucks everywhere else? You realize he practically negates himself by being on the ice for so many goals against, right?
The 60 pt guy is giving you way more productivity.
I read it sort of like:
80-35 = 45 pts
60+20 = 80 pts
80 > 45
I know there's more to it than that, but it's a fairly good benchmark, especially when the numbers end up so far apart.
