Design Jake Allen's Mask

Post by cprice12 »

Anyone else enter this contest?
I had forgotten about it. I threw a design together last night. I painted a couple masks back in the day, but I had never designed a goalie mask on the computer before. It was kind of fun to put together.
I'm curious to see what others look like that were submitted.

Here's mine:

I did one but it didn't turn out how I wanted. I was having a hard time wrapping it into the template. Basically my idea was Blues colored snake skin (like diamondback rattlesnake skin) in the front and it's shedding toward the back and flaking away and underneath is solid blue with some New Brunswick and St. Louis graphics faded into that part. It's cool in my head, but I couldn't get it quite right on paper for some reason.

I submitted it anyway but there's no chance I win. Of course, if the ones they posted on their Facebook page are any indication, anything is possible. Some of those are....not good.

Yours looks good, Curt. Better than those others, for sure.

I doubt the exact design goes on the mask as it was submitted. I think they said it would be used as a guide. So if someone submits a good idea, that may be all they are looking for.
Your idea sounds cool.
And yeah, the ones on the Facebook feed aren't great.

Thank you kindly.

I'm happy with it. Considering I didn't really have a game plan and just sat down and starting messing around until I found a direction, I think it turned out nice.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the other submissions look like.

I don't like any of these as much as I like Curt's. If I had to rank them, I'd say 3, 2, 1.

Yeah, mine didn't make the cut.

But I really like #2. It's simple but very well done.
I don't like the skyline in #1...it looks "too airbrushed", like something you'd get on a t-shirt at a six-flags caricature booth. But the snakes and the ribbon on the chin are very nice.
I don't like #3 much at all. It just doesn't work for me. It doesn't "pop".
I was going to go with a snake theme...it looks like Allen wanted to go that route. If I had remembered about the contest and had more time, maybe I would have submitted a 2nd entry with a snake theme.

But I thought mine was at least much better than #3...oh well.

I voted for #2. I hope that one wins.

I'm not a huge fan of number 3 either. It doesn't look bad, but I like yours much better.

I probably go 1, 2, 3. 1 and 2 are pretty close.

I'll say this... #1 will probably win simply because it has a snake on it.
Half the voters will be like, "Hey cool...a snake! THAT'S GOT MY VOTE!"
I'm not saying that's right or wrong or that it isn't a good design...but that's what will happen.

See, I was the opposite. The snake turned me off, that's why I ranked #1 last. It looks a little tacky to me. The reason why I like #3, even if it doesn't pop, it's got the fleur de lis, the river, the arch, the Blue Note, and piano keys. Looking again, I like #2 a little more than I did on first glance, but I like the more St. Louis-centric appeal of the 3rd mask.

I voted for #2.

I feel like the snakes are too cliche on #1, and I think the music scale ribbon on the chin has been done before; it just feels kind of predictable. However, just like Curt said, I bet this one wins because of everything I just said I didn't like about it. I'm not trying to sound uppity, but that's the type of thing the person who doesn't have an art background would be more drawn too. It's the "obvious" one. The others you kind of have to think about and visualize a bit.

#3 I can appreciate the elements that were used. At least they were more original, but I don't really like the "Blues logo looking like wings" thing or the arch. I think it'll just look like he has a circle around his face.

#2 has great lines and doesn't feel cheap and hokey. It's intimidating. It might be simpler than the others, but that's why I like it. I've always been a "less is more" kind of person.

#2 by a long shot. I will even say I like it more than Curt's precisely because of its simplicity.

Sad that it was wasted on a guy that never quite made it, but I think Toivonen's mask is my favorite of all time so far

Fair enough. #2 has my vote as well.
Actually, #2 and mine are somewhat similar.

One of the artists who will be painting the mask commented on the choices and said #2 needed something on the side of the chin as it looked kind of bare there.
I dunno. I see what he is saying, but I like the simplicity of it. You don't need something "happening" on every square inch of the mask.
Quite often, less is more.

And I agree with those who have said that his current mask is better than anything submitted. I'm a huge fan of his current mask. It's one of my favorite masks any Blues goalie has ever had.

That's just a sick design.

I'm also a huge fan of Elliott's mask this year.

Agreed. Allen's current one is great. I don't really get why he's already switching it, honestly. I guess it's a publicity thing to get the fans involved, which is cool. It's just odd. We've only seen the current one 6 times so far.

Panger mentioned, or implied, on the air that the contest mask will be his backup mask.
I don't believe that was mentioned anywhere else before.
So it's possible the contest mask won't see any ice time...but I'd imagine that he'd wear it for at least one game after it is done.

I'm happy about that...as I'd hate to see him shelve his current mask for whichever one wins.
