Keith Olbermann Takes on the Original Six Myth

Post by dmiles2186 »

I enjoyed this video greatly. Regardless of what your thoughts of KO are, dude can write a monologue like no other.

He's 100% right.
I have been harping this for years. I even vented about it way back in 2007 on my site:

I hate when those pesky facts get in the way...

This was interesting. I have to admit that I didn't really even know this. My hockey history knowledge is probably the worst of any sport I follow.

Now that I know the story, I'm not really that bothered by it. The "Original Six" may not be the true original teams, but they are the teams that made up the first, solid foundation of what would become the current league. In a sense, they are originals based on that, but it's a very loose usage of the word "original". They market them like they are the first teams. Whether that's on purpose or not is where one might start getting frustrated/annoyed at the league.

It's definitely changed my opinion of all of those "original six" headlines I've read over the years.

Shared this with one of my buddies who is a die hard Bruins fan and won't pass up an opportunity to brag about his team being an original 6 team. His response: "(Frank) off the bruins run shit and no one cares about any of that until it was all set in stone and not changing"

Pretty much my take. I didn't know much of this (although I knew there were other teams like the STL Eagles back in the day). I'm not all that bothered by the usage of "Original Six" either, whether it's factual or not.

I love KO monologues though. He's probably the best in the business at it.

btw... in ~1942, the start of the original six era, the largest metros in the USA were, in order: NY, CHI, Philly, LA, Detroit, Boston.

They call it "original six" because it sounds better than "Four of the Six largest television markets in the USA plus the two biggest in Canada."

I knew the Original Six were neither original nor six, which is useful knowledge when in discussion with dumbasses.

But ultimately, if hyping the "Original Six" holds and increases the casual fan's interest, it's good for the game, and by extension, all the other teams as well.

Bah - this clip sounds the same as all the KO political rants he's done over the years. Read through the BS - he's a fan of a team that's not an original 6 so therefore needs to create this. I could care less. Christmas is still xmas and the Original 6 will always be referred to as the Original 6 - and rightly so.

Perhaps if you redefine the word original.

Of the 30 NHL teams right now, which 6 have been around the longest? That's your original 6. I think the whole 'debate' is pretty silly - they've always been the original 6 and always will be. It doesn't mean anything other than that. Those matchups though are exciting and always have the highest demand in ratings and tickets.

Be that as it may, they're not the original six unless you redefine the word original. Perhaps the modern era original six, but that's it.

The Blues were supposed to play in Baltimore, but the cocklicker in Chicago had this boondoggle arena on Oakland Avenue in St. Louis that he wanted to unload, so he refused to let any teams in that weren't in St. Louis.
