Season series: In a rare matchup of home-and-home games between Eastern and Western Conference teams, the St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils square off for the second time in three days. Behind Vladimir Tarasenko's seventh goal in five games -- a third period power-play goal -- and Jake Allen's second consecutive shutout, a 26-save effort, the Blues defeated the Devils 1-0 on Tuesday.

Devils team scope: The Devils begin a stretch where they play nine of 15 away from home, including a three-game trip that begins Thursday in St. Louis. Coach Pete DeBoer was asked after the game Tuesday if there was an advantage to playing the Blues so quick.

"I don't know. We'll see. They're a good team," DeBoer said before joking, "If I had my choice, I'd choose someone else to play. We'll get back at them. The nice thing is we feel, after [Tuesday], we should be able to play with this team. We know what worked and what didn't work. We have to replicate that in St. Louis."

General manager Lou Lamoriello told reporters after practice Wednesday that of the Devils injured players, only Jordin Tootoo (foot) will accompany the team for back-to-back games against the Blues and Detroit Red Wings on Friday. DeBoer told reporters Wednesday that goalie Cory Schneider will get the start in St. Louis.

Blues team scope: The Blues will take a six game winning-streak, their longest since winning seven straight from Dec. 28, 2013-Jan. 9, 2014, into the game Thursday. Tarasenko, named the NHL First Star of the Week on Monday, has nine points in the past five games.

"He came through for us [Tuesday]," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He felt badly missing all the odd-man rushes he had in the first period but he snapped that one. That was a goal-scorer's goal."

The Blues, who were off Wednesday, could get a boost to their lineup with the return of center Paul Stastny. Stastny has missed the past eight games but Hitchcock said prior to the game Tuesday that Stastny is now "days, not weeks" away from a return to the lineup.

Right wing T.J. Oshie (concussion) continues to be sidelined indefinitely.

Allen has a shutout streak of 127:30 and is the NHL leader in goals-against average (1.00) and save percentage (.959).

Allen is starting. According to Hitch it's mostly because they had already planned earlier to have Elliott go against Nashville on Saturday. It's also a reward for Allen's recent play, though they were quick to point that as the secondary reasoning.

After all, you don't want to get those media types all stirred up...
