Great Tony Twist interview!

Post by JesusNEVERexisted »

Twist recently gave this interview to a Buffalo radio station. It's well worth listening to. I never knew he was about tosign a multi million dollar deal with the Flyers just 1 day after he got in the bike accident! He talks in detail about his bike accident that ended his career. He also laments that the NHL is trying to get rid of fighting.

Tony Twist never existed.

I was never a fan of his game - he was a boxer wearing ice skates to me and I'm glad to see the days of these guys fading away. I hated it when we signed John Scott a few years ago - here was a guy who belonged to that class of players who couldn't skate and chew gum at the same time - and there only role was to fight. Good riddance.

I agree with you to a point. Fighting can make the game look thuggish and too much fighting in the 80s led to some people calling the NHL "WWE on ice".

BUT you have to admit some fighting was very entertaining and whenever there was a fight everyone was glued. No one went to the concessions stands during a fight! I have that "Probert/Kocur Bruise Brothers" bootleg video and it's fantastic to watch!

I am NOT a Wings fan but I bought it in The Hockey News. They sold it in The Hockey News back in the day and I know that lots of other Blues fans got that video too since it is such a rarity that will NEVER be made again! :fischerugly:

Don't you miss those classic Chicago stadium fights?

There's a difference between the goon and enforcer. The goon is a fighter and can't play the game (i.e John Scott, Tony Twist, and many others). The enforcer, like Probert can fight AND play the game - they actually contribute some offensive production to the team. I enjoy watching enforcers play and fight. I do not enjoy watching the goons at all - they are just wasted roster spots IMO.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the argument for more Probert, less Twist is not gonna be a popular one on this forum.

Did you know Probert actually played in an All Star game? It was 87 or 88. In his prime Probert was the best player of all the enforcers and even The Hockey News said that!

While I enjoyed having the heavyweight champ of the NHL on my hometown team, I agree with the point about goons. The goon culture really limited some guys too. Probert and Chris Simon, for example, could actually play but they also knew that wasn't what they were paid to do. Gino Odjick showed some ability early in his career but had already been tabbed as a goon. These days, they just aren't worth having on the roster. That's why I don't really like seeing Reaves on the roster-especially after that playoff series where he didn't even do the enforcer's job and make the $#!thawks pay for Seabrook's headhunting.

You really don't want guys to do a big retaliation in the playoffs. Had Reaves done that he could have gotten a 5 min major and cost the Blues the game. We hear it all the time - you have to know when to walk away. The resulting PP for the Blackhawks could have swung momentum to Chicago just on the retaliation. Too risky and it's probably why Reaves held back.

Yeah, I agree. I wanted Seabrook to get it. I really did. But, next year is the proper time. I'll be a little surprised if it actually happens though. It seems that the Blues don't settle scores much. Looking at you Joe Thornton.
