ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has signed forward Joakim Lindstrom to a one-year contract.

Lindstrom, 30, has spent the past two seasons with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SweHL), including 2013-14, when he posted 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists) and 72 penalty minutes in 55 games.

A second round pick (41st overall) of Columbus in 2002, the 6-foot, 203-pound forward has appeared in five NHL seasons, including stints with Columbus, Phoenix and Colorado.

Overall, the Skelleftea, Sweden native has recorded 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists) and 46 penalty minutes in 97 career games.

I happened to read the comments on the Blues facebook page on this signing.

Good lord people are stupid. They are pissed. It's like they think this is the move we are making to upgrade the offense.

Seems like every time we make a minor move, people feel like that guy was signed to be 'the answer' to our problems. Definitely elicits a forehead slap.

Edit: my favorite exchange on the Blues' Facebook page

"I just don't think I can root for a Lindstrom. My hatred for the Red Wings runs deep. And he would be a constant reminder."

to which someone replied..."Lindström not Lidström."

The guy was the best forward on the Swedish team in the Worlds. I know, worlds don't mean much, etc., etc. but from what I saw, he is fast, skilled and has a good wrist shot. Probably didn't cost the Blues too much. He didn't really do much in the NHL before, so not sure where he'd fit on the roster.

I have to say that I tend to just scroll through my news feed on Facebook and don't always read everything word for word. When I saw the Blues and a picture of an Avs player I got super excited for a second because I thought it was Stastny...

It wasn't.

I'm pretty non-plussed about this signing. In 97 games, he has 33 points. That's not that bad for an up an coming player that has finished his rookie season plus a few games in a previous season. But, his 97 games are spread over 5 seasons and he's 30 years old. Maybe he figured something out over in Sweden, and maybe being good friends with Steen will help him. But, I'm not very excited about what he's going to bring. That said, for 700K, that's probably to be expected.

I'd say depth move, but not on a 1-way contract. We'll see where this goes. Maybe makes trading another piece to Ottawa to seal up Spezza a possiblity.

People who wanted Jori Lehterä like crazy and thought he would be our savior are now lamenting this signing. Incredible. At that price, Lindström is a very good signing, and I honestly don't see him being a worse player than Lehterä. To be named the best player of the SHL (arguably the best league in the world after NHL and KHL) and score at the rate he did in the World Championships, he's obviously a good player. Now, NHL and SHL are two very different leagues, but this is a low risk-high reward operation. The guy has some NHL experience, he's at a good age and are coming off a decent season. If he's no good, then just chunk him. It's not like this signing is preventing us from acting in the free agent market come July. If anything, it's giving us more opportunity.

I'm gonna go out on a ledge here and claim, given the same amount of ice-time, he'll be able to produce at more or less the same rate as someone as Derek Roy. Now, wouldn't that be something...

That cup emoticon should have it's own thread. It's one of the best parts of this board.

This is a high reward/low risk signing, imo.

The guy seemed to figure something out in the SEL, and he's going to play a role similar to Roy for a fraction of the cost. If he's exactly what Roy was, it's a win...if he has a breakout year it's a brilliant move. If he sucks at camp, don't be shocked if he's let go.

Only way I am upset by this signing is if this is the only move they make for more scoring up front.
