Blues Hire Jim Corsi as Goaltending Coach

Post by dmiles2186 »

If this happened before we re-signed Ells, I think most of us would have thought Miller was coming back for sure.

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Blues President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced today the club has named Jim Corsi as Goaltending Coach.

Corsi, 59, has spent the past 16 seasons as the goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, working with the club’s NHL goalies, as well as their prospects throughout the system.

During his time with the Sabres, Corsi produced multiple Vezina Trophy winners, including Ryan Miller (2009-10) and Dominik Hasek (1998-99, 2001).

Overall, Corsi brings with him over 20 years of hockey experience, including time as a player, coach, manager and analyst.

Previously, Corsi has worked with both the Italian Men’s and Canadian Women’s National Teams, as well as with junior (OHL’s St. Michael’s Majors), collegiate (Ottawa University, McGill University, Concordia University) and professional European programs (Schwenningen HC, German League). Throughout his coaching career, Corsi also developed the “Corsi Rating,” which is an individual stat figured by calculating the number of shots directed toward the offensive goal versus the number of shots directed toward the defensive goal while in five-on-five situations (excludes empty net shots).

During his playing career, Corsi appeared in 89 professional games in North America, including stints with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers and the World Hockey Association’s (WHA) Quebec Nordiques.

Fluent in English, French, Italian and German, Corsi also played internationally in Europe, Russia and China from 1980-92. In international tournaments, Corsi represented Italy several times, including eight World Ice Hockey Championships (1981-83, 1985-87, 1989-90) and the 1984 Winter Olympics

He seems pretty good but has mostly coached losing teams.

Yes, I find that quite odd. I guess they're thinking his relative success in Buffalo was more down to superior coaching rather than superior skill?
