I like the guy, but I think some folks here have a short memory and somehow have decided that since "goaltending isn't the problem," we can just give the job to anyone.
Interesting.
But I remember EXACTLY what happened that year.

Elliott started off the season just fine for the first 2 or 3 games, but then he hit a bad skid where he was playing awful...but it wasn't half of the season or anything like that. It was like 6 or 7 games or so. The way it shook down the way it did is because that was a shortened season, so we couldn't sit around and wait for him to snap out of it here. A 6 game suck streak that year was like a 12 game suck streak during a normal season. So they benched him for a while and then sent him to Peoria while Allen filled in here.

Allen played..."ok" when he was here. His numbers were, meh...ok.

But also don't forget the team wasn't playing great in front of Elliott either. They were sloppy and looked "off"...probably because of the lockout and no training camp. When Allen stepped in, he wasn't anything spectacular, but that seemed to jolt the team into stepping up their game, and they did. They played much better in front of Allen than they did in front of Elliott.
Then Elliott came back and was lights out...and the team was playing better as well. The combination shot them up the standings and got them a 4 seed. Elliott was a huge reason for that.

Elliott had a poor start to that season, but if it was a regular 82 game season, it wouldn't have been a huge deal. Goalies go through slumps...everyone does, and that was his that year...granted, it was a horrible slump...but he still finished the season with decent numbers which says a lot about how he finished the season. You take away 6 of those games early in the year where he played poorly and he would have had the best numbers in the league. I totaled it all up once and posted it a thread here somewhere...wherever it is.

So if the reason you don't want to sign Elliott, is because of a 6 game stretch he had 2 seasons ago...a season that was cut in half by a lockout and where Elliott didn't play anywhere during that lockout, and didn't have a real training camp, so was naturally rusty... you go right ahead and feel that way. But I'll judge him based on the rest of his play during his 4 years here. And I think he has earned the #1 job. I think he's the best goalie we're going to get for the money...and he'll probably be a bargain at that price.

One thing I noticed after we acquired Miller was that we (here on the board) began discussing the types of goals he was giving up every game. Essentially, we were explaining them away- he was screened on this one, that one was a softie, no goalie could have saved that one, etc. I haven't seen discussion like that (at least not to the levels it was happening) since the days of Brent Johnson, Patrick Lalime, Manny Legace, et al.

Not sure if that was because Miller was our new goalie and our hoped-for missing piece (and therefore under greater scrutiny), but it was disconcerting to me to even see those type of discussions happening again- it took me back to a dark period in Blues history. That's what concerns me about potentially going with Miller in the future.
