Halak is all but gone. He has to be. It would free up a chunk of salary...and we tried to trade him near the deadline last year but he got hurt.

I'm inclined to think the former. If changes in scenery were what motivates Roy to do well, he would have gotten more than 6 points in his 12 games in Vancouver. Small sample size, yes. But Alan Vigneault promotes a highly offensive style of hockey whereas Ken Hitchcock doesn't. If Roy was going to produce, he would have under AV and he probably won't under KH.
Roy - 6 PTS in 12 games in Vancouver as a third line center behind H Sedin and Kesler. That's a point every other game, more than our third line centers last season (Sobotka - 19 PTS). He finished with 29 points on the season. I know hich's system might constrict his offensive creativity, but I have to think he'll be a top 6 forward for us. I'm ok with this signing. I think he plays a lot like Schwartz. Fast, tenacious, and gritty. And he can play make well too. I think he'll fit in fine. I'm more concerned with how much he's been traded lately. Seems like he might be pissing a lot of people off in the locker room or something

Apparently Sabres and Blues discussing a trade involving Vanek, Stafford, and Oshie. I don't know how reputable this guy is, and I don't know how to embed the tweet on here. So heres the link: https://twitter.com/HockeyyInsiderr

No thanks.

Edit: I'm high. Do this in a heartbeat. I don't know how Buffalo would be willing to do this deal though. If we threw in a second rounder or so I could see it

I would do that trade yesterday. What a steal if Army pulls it off!

Obviously this is purely guessing here, but I could see Halak being a part of the trade so it would free up some salary on our end. That would in turn free up the Sabres to try to trade Ryan Miller elsewhere.

I could see Ryan Miller going to the Islanders. They're in the market for a goalie.

What will they do with Rick DiPietro? Doesn't he have like 27 years left on his contract?

They bought him out so he's a free agent. They resigned Nabokov I believe, but my guess is they'd be willing to take Miller if they had the cap space.

Speaking of Rick DiPietro, what's the over/under on games he'll play at the NHL level the rest of his career. I say 15 games. He'll latch on with some desperate team towards the end of a season, play it out, blow out his knee in the last game and be done.

Vanek makes $7.142 M (1 year left before UFA) and Stafford $4 M(2 years left before UFA). Oshie $4.175 for 4 more years.

to be able to sign Petro and Stewart we will need to shed payroll; adding $7 M in payroll would leave us maxed out.

so unless Buffalo is going to retain cap hit/salary responsibilty, we'd have to do a massive overhaul to make the numbers work.

I get this distinct feeling that when all is said and done, Petro will be wearing another sweater next season.

interestingly, the Blues offseason so far (it could change dramatically or not at all) has largely followed the "doing nothing" scenario I had suggested would be "OK."

They have resigned most their key RFAS. and presumably will eventually resign Stewart and Petro.

Their moves on offense have been "depth neutral"; replacing McDonald (almost dollar for dollar) with Roy. Replaced Nichol with Lapierre. Resigned Cracknell.
Spent more money than I thought they would on UFAs (they haven't replaced Langenbruner, but I basically don't count that as a needed replacement)

On defense they spent more money to retain Leopold (who I thought they'd let go). Swapping him on next season's depth chart for Russell, which can only be a plus.

So IF they can resign Petro and Stewart (and Allen) and perhaps deal Halak for a pick and prospect to get the cap relief they need, I think the offseason will be "ok".

only concern is at the deadline, being maxed on he cap will make it harder to make additive moves without asking the other team to retain cap/hit which will only make have to shell out more in the trade.

PAH. Simple:

To Buffalo: Perron (3.812), Oshie (4.175), Halak (3.750) =11.737m
To STL: Vanek (7.142), Stafford (4.0)=11.142

Viola! MAJOR upgrade which would make Pie think twice about not signing with the Note. One trade like this, not counting anything else, and we're saying we're out to win. Best part is, if we had to give up someone else, all that would do is give us more money to play with. Can't beat this.

The big question is this: We have 9.16m cap room left. That would be enough as it stands to sign Stewart (3m) and Pie (6m), if we could pull that off. If Pie asks for 7+, do we 'trade down' Stewart to another team for the cap space to do it? What would you do?

this of course assumes Buffalo wants to pay their backup goalie $3.75 M or can deal Miller in a seperate deal

I agree with what you are saying here, but don't forget that Allen needs to be re-signed as well. That may change the equation slightly.
