After poking around a few other websites for news about Petro, I came across this: . I can't find any recording of it or any mention of it elsewhere, but it's definitely reassuring if it's true.

That is, indeed, very reassuring. What a professional. How many players out there would make it clear to not entertain offers from other teams that would undoubtedly be worth far more than he'll ultimately get from the Blues?

That one I find funny, since Nabokov wanted nothing to do with the Islanders when he was "acquired" by them thanks to waivers via trade.

What will they do with Rick DiPietro? Doesn't he have like 27 years left on his contract?
And Nabokov who the Islanders just re-signed.

to be able to sign Petro and Stewart we will need to shed payroll; adding $7 M in payroll would leave us maxed out.

so unless Buffalo is going to retain cap hit/salary responsibilty, we'd have to do a massive overhaul to make the numbers work.
PAH. Simple:

To Buffalo: Perron (3.812), Oshie (4.175), Halak (3.750) =11.737m
To STL: Vanek (7.142), Stafford (4.0)=11.142

Viola! MAJOR upgrade which would make Pie think twice about not signing with the Note. One trade like this, not counting anything else, and we're saying we're out to win. Best part is, if we had to give up someone else, all that would do is give us more money to play with. Can't beat this.

The big question is this: We have 9.16m cap room left. That would be enough as it stands to sign Stewart (3m) and Pie (6m), if we could pull that off. If Pie asks for 7+, do we 'trade down' Stewart to another team for the cap space to do it? What would you do?
Stewart walks. One of the rookies - Rattie or the Czech guy - replaces him. It's not like Stewart did anything at all in the playoffs other than skate around like a wuss and not hit anyone or actually score goals.
