COYOTES (18-17-7) at BLUES (24-16-2)

TV: FS-A PLUS, FS-MW

Last 10: Phoenix 5-2-3; St. Louis 7-3-0

Season series: This is the third of three meetings this season between the two teams. In the most recent clash on March 15, St. Louis Blues rookie Jake Allen made 28 saves to preserve a 3-0 victory at Scottrade Center. Forward Chris Stewart had two goals and one assist in the win.

Big story: The Phoenix Coyotes' slim playoff hopes took a hit on Monday following a 4-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale. Phoenix had earned a point in eight of its previous nine games prior to the loss. With just six games remaining, the Coyotes are in 11th place in the Western Conference with 43 points and would likely need to run the table to avoid missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in four years.

Team Scope:

Coyotes: Faced with a must-win against the Sharks on Monday on home ice, the Coyotes were outshot, 24-7, and outscored, 3-0, in the second period on the way to being shut out for the seventh time this season. Goalie Jason LaBarbera made 37 saves standing in for injured goalie Mike Smith, who sustained a lower-body injury in practice on Sunday and was unable to make it through Monday's morning skate.

"What frustrates me is when you have situations when you don't think we're playing as well as we can," coach Dave Tippett said. "We don't have enough players impacting the outcome of the game in a positive way. We've got too many players that are just taking up a spot right now."

Blues: The Blues halted a two-game losing streak and helped coach Ken Hitchcock earn career win No. 600 in the National Hockey League following a 2-1 shootout decision over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. Andy McDonald and Alexander Steen scored shootout goals and goalie Brian Elliott made it stand. Despite the victory, St. Louis has not scored more than two goals in any of its last six games, relying on the stellar play of Elliott and Allen to begin the month. Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester scored his first goal as a member of the Blues to pull his team into a 1-1 tie in the third period.

Who's hot: Elliott rebounded strong after allowing two goals on 24 shots in a 2-0 loss to Chicago on Sunday with a 22-save performance in a shootout win over the Canucks two days later. The 28-year-old goalie is 6-1-0 in his last seven decisions with a 1.00 goals-against average, .963 save percentage and three shutouts.

Injury report: Left wing Lauri Korpikoski (upper body) and goalie Smith (lower body) are listed day-to-day for Phoenix. … St. Louis forwards Scott Nichol (lower body) and T.J. Oshie (foot) are questionable while goalie Jaroslav Halak (lower body) is out.

Score some freakin' goals.

For the most part, Phoenix is a pretty up-and-down team (bottom feeder one year, playoff contender the next), but they are still capable of playing spoiler to our #6 seed hopes. Let's make sure that doesn't happen.

2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

Another must win, pretty much the whole season is a must win to establish some confidence going into the playoffs.

Please get the franking power play going.

it would be great to get an early goal, maybe that would bring some confidence and some more scoring then. like glen says, a win is a must. but also the yotes, if they lose, they pretty much are out of it. So, close game again:

Blues 2 ot
Yotes 1

:letsgoblues:

Maybe i'l even make it to flash chat for a period or two :aaaa:

After 2 periods, it still looks like balls.

Nice to see Hitch go out on the ice and give the refs an earful. I was going to be really pissed if we didn't get 2 points out of this game after that call (and subsequent non-call).

Someone needs to tell them that it is possible to do more than the bare minimum and still be credited with a win. Wow, we needed those points.

I didn't get to see any of this one. What happened?

Well Hitch got a 10 min misconduct at the end of the shootout, so I'm not sure how that's even possible, but its in the score sheet. He had to be restrained by a linesman for the bS calls that took place.

1) Vlad was boarded - no call
2) Backes did board his guy, fine, 2 min, but how Backes gets punched in the head by 3 different guys and no call? BS
3) Petro gets boarded just as bad if not worse than what Backes did, no call, and immediately results in a goal.

Kerbs was saying on the radio home that Hitch will be reprimanded by the NHL in someway most likely.

Just to add a little more detail, all of this started with less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd and the Blues leading 1-0. The non call when Petro was clearly boarded allowed the Yotes to tie the game while on a power play with just over one minute to go. How the refs do not call #3 above, I have no idea. Both refs were staring at it and did nothing. Blues are a man down. Puck is in the corner. Two Blues are battling with two Yotes. Petro moves to the corner also and is squarely facing the boards. Puck is directly in front of him. #11 hits Petro square in the back right in the numbers head first into the boards. 6 of 9 skaters are in the vicinity of the puck, yet neither ref sees a blatant boarding??

Glad the Blues got the 2 after that BS in the last 5 minutes.

(Franking) refs!
Scottrade was going berserk!
EVERYONE was yelling REF YOU SUCK! Was awesome.
Is this garbage offense Hitch's fault??

What a crapshow at the end of the game. I was really happy to see Hitch go on the ice to get in the refs' ears. They swallowed the whistles until the Backes hit, put them back in their pocket when Backes got jumped by 3 guys, then kept them their when Petro was blatantly hit from behind. That could have cost the Blues a valuable point. Luckily they buckled down and took it in OT. Elliott's final glove save in the shootout was outstanding. He looked so confident snagging that, almost like he knew what was coming. Keep collecting points and things will be fine, although I'm not going to be at ease until we've got a playoff spot sewed up.

Finding ways to win. Trademark of a great team and the Blues keep doing it, and especially down the stretch. HUGE 2 points.

Unless Elliott pulls off a Roman Turek-2002-esque type of playoff run, these 1 and 2 goal games aren't going to cut it and puts a lot of pressure on the defense and goaltending to perform that they don't need. NEED MORE GOALS.

At the moment though, goal #1 is playoffs and we're well on our way. At this point it'd take an epic collapse to miss them. Better not.

Elliott is a wall right now. Not only is he not allowing goals during regulation, but he isn't allowing anything in the shootouts either. He's pitched shutouts in the last two shootouts.

God it feels good to have our kick ass goaltending back. :letsgoblues:

The fact that we are winning so many games lately while only scoring one goal in regulation is crazy. I guess playing in these tight, high pressure, low scoring games could be a nice warmup for the playoffs...but geez, how about a PP goal every now and then, or winning by 2 goals would be nice.

Oh, and Detroit is now sitting in 10th place as Dallas has technically caught and passed them.  :detsucks:

Just wanted to say... Kerry Fraser agrees calls were wrong again

Martin Hanzal made solid contact directly from behind which caused Alex Pietrangelo to be thrown head first into the boards. This was a boarding infraction that should have been called. As both Peitrangelo fell forward into the end boards with Martin Hanzal on top the the Blues defenceman, Hanzal bunted the puck with the back of his glove (hand pass) to Oliver Ekman-Larsson as both players earned an assist on the tying goal by Radim Vrbata. (The slashes that Pietrangelo administered to Hanzal following the hit would also be deemed infractions under normal circumstance.)

I did not see the hand pass, but Fraser certainly has better video than I, and that game tying goal should never have been allowed, even without the penalty call.
