PEORIA — The Peoria Rivermen signed Russian winger Sergei Andronov to a one-year, AHL-only contract on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old played the last two seasons in Russia's KHL for CSKA Moscow. He left that team earlier this summer to announce he was headed to North America to play for the Blues in a move that seemed to catch the NHL parent club by surprise a bit.

The defensive forward, who is an excellent skater and positional player, will instead launch his career with Peoria.

He was the Blues third-round pick in the 2009 NHL ENtry Draft. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Andronov scored 5 goals in each of the last three seasons in the KHL over a total of 105 games.

He played for Russia's World Junior 18-under gold medal team in 2007, and scored 3 goals in 7 games for Russia's World Junior Championships team that won bronze in 2009.

His linemate on the WJC team was current Rivermen and Blues prospect Evgeny Grachev.
