Western Standings, Apr 4

Post by gaijin »

Despite a 4-2 lead, Anaheim shit the bed against Vancouver, losing in the shootout and giving the Canucks 2 points. As a result, VAN leads the Western Conference by 3 points, so if we are to win the West, we need a little luck in addition to solid play in our last 3 games.

PHX and SJ also won, bolstering their positions as playoff teams. It is looking more likely these will be the #7 and #8 teams, though still tough to tell who is who as they are only 1 point apart, both with 2 games remaining.

NSH beat Minny-soe-ta to leap over DET for the 4th seed. It is still most likely for these teams to face each other in Round 1, and pressure is now on DET to regain that 4th seed and home ice advantage. Chicago, at no risk of losing their #6 spot, could still very feasibly challenge for the #5 seed. Either way, good riddance to at least one of these 3 teams. Although it's unfortunate that one (perhaps two) of them HAS to move on to Round 2.

Current matchups:

VAN vs. SJ
STL vs. PHX
LA vs. CHI
NSH vs. DET (Preds with home ice)

Yeah, I'm perfectly fine if this is how the standings end....but we have to be playing better even if that doesn't result in us moving up (though it would be quite nice to have home ice trough-out).

The biggest question is still "Who do we want to win the NSH/DET series?" (assuming we get our sh*t together and win our series)

Right. First things first.

It's a tough call. We don't exactly have a playoff history against Nashville, so it would be nice to build up that rivalry a bit, although the prospect of facing Rinne in the playoffs unnerves me a bit. Howard seems less threatening, but you know how things tend to go for the Red Wings in the playoffs, especially against the Blues. We've got a lot of playoff demons to exorcise against DET, and it would be nice to finally do so.

The benefit to the 2 seed is that we escape the winner of that series as long as LA (or whoever wins the Pacific, it's still too close to call) beats Chicago. I'd say LA has the best shot at that, with their defensive play, but Phoenix could do the same with Mike Smith standing on his head.

That would set the Blues up for a conference final against either Nashville or Detroit, should they get past Vancouver. Obviously, thinking way too far ahead at this point, but that'd be a war, eh?

The Blues just need one more point than the Canucks for these last 3 games..the Blues have a guaranteed advantage if they are tied(Van has 8 shoot out wins and Blues have 4).

I know these are two completely different teams, but is anyone else worried about a STL-SJ series (If Blues have #1 and Sharks have #8)? I mean, 1999-2000....

Just makes me remember those feelings I had when that happened...

I'd rather play Detroit than Nashville. Keep Rinne away. I'd also rather play Chicago than LA for similar reasons.

In all honesty though. The Blues need not worry who they play. Instead, they just need to play well. They have home ice in the first two rounds for sure. If they make it to the 3rd, I don't really care that much because getting there means we are playing well.

I'm hoping we somehow end up with Dallas in the first round so that I can see a few games.

Unlikely, but I was really hoping the same thing. Where do you live?

I don't live there anymore, but my family lives in Highland Park. I am going to be visiting for 2 weeks before I deploy later in the month.

Gotcha. I was wondering why Stars games were convenient to attend from Camp Lejeune.

Best of luck, bro.

That will haunt me as well. The only thing that will make that pain go away, is when we beat Detroit in the playoffs. Then there will be some redemption there.

Bad feelings aside that is still the sickest slapshot I have ever seen in my life. Life just isn't fair sometimes... or if you're a Blues fan, all the time. :(

Helped out by a Murray Baron screen.
If you are a goalie, you see that shot off the stick...you stop it 100 out of 100 times.
