Hockey's Hardest Hitters Parts I, II & III

Post by cprice12 »

Good stuff...but wow...a lot of those hits are dirty as hell.
Makes you sit back and realize why they league had to start protecting the players more.

Part I:

At the 9 minute mark, they said Brown got a lengthy suspension for what he did. So tell me why that jackass who intentionally crosschecked Backes in the head (almost the exact same play) only got 1 game??

The difference is that Brown took out all of Sandstrom's teeth on that crosscheck and I think he broke his jaw also.

Does it really matter though? Taking out his teeth is just a matter of his head being turned a bit more. Both were still intentional cross checks to the head. If Backes had his head turned a bit, he'd have lost some teeth and maybe had his jaw broke as well. The stick work was about the same.

Brown skated up to Sandstrom with the intention of injuring him. If you watch the replay closely, that was a much more severe crosscheck. Sandstrom's head snaps to the side pretty violently. I agree that the crosscheck on Backes was bullcrap, but I think it was only barely in the same ballpark as was Brown did.

I don't have the Backes play here in front of me... did the stick get his helmet a little bit? Shit, we should start sending tapes to the league office.

Plus, Brown was a goon.

I looked at it again and yeah, Brown's hit was much worse...more violent. He came skating in as opposed to hitting from a standing position like Peters was...I forgot Peters was standing still.
But with that said both were violent and intentional cross checks to the head, Brown got 15 games and Peters gets 1 game?
Brown should have been suspended for the season and Peters should have at least gotten at least 5 games.

If Peters had done that to Crosby or any Red Wing, he'd have been gone for 6 or 7 games at least.

Here's the Peters crosscheck on Backes:

Yeah, 1 game for that was a joke. Shanny has done a pretty terrible job this year. Inconsistent as hell.

I think he got all shield and helmet on Backes... didn't he?

I think 5 games would have been fair for that. I remember being pissed off about it.

Sandstrom was a marked man. Brown's the one who did what many players wanted to do for a long time... it was absolutely pre-meditated... many think Sandstrom deserved it too since he was such a dirty player. I remember when it happened... I was like "hell yeah, that pussy finally got paid back."

I guarantee had Backes had a broken jaw, in today's NHL the suspension probably would have been like 30-40 games or worse... maybe the whole season, depending on what they think the intent was.
