They want to get in the top 8, Blues want to maintain their top spot. Time for a bounce back win, boys.

Also, per Buccigross, Jaden Schwartz is the first teenager to score a goal in his first two games since Lindros.
Maintaining their spot among the top eight teams in the Western Conference remains the primary focus for the Los Angeles Kings. Avoiding a first-round matchup with the West-leading St. Louis Blues might also be worth thinking about.

Hoping to better their playoff position, the Kings look to extend their season-best winning streak to six games when they host the Blues in a potential postseason preview Thursday night.

Los Angeles (36-25-12) has won five in a row and eight of 10 to grab hold of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. If the current conference standings were to hold up, the Kings would face St. Louis (46-20-8) in the first round.

However, Los Angeles is one point behind Pacific Division-leading Dallas. The difference between first and second in the crowded division - which has its top four teams within three points of each other - is third and eighth in the conference.

Though the Kings know they have a chance to possibly take over the Pacific lead with a win Thursday, they simply want to focus on extending a season high with a sixth straight home win.

"I don't know if you want to wait until the end of the year to play like this, but we're doing it now," said forward Anze Kopitar, who has four goals and three assists in the last four games. "It's nice to see us in the playoff picture, but we know there's still a lot of work to be done. We're definitely showing signs."

Kopitar and Mike Richards each had a goal with two assists in Tuesday's 5-2 home win over San Jose. The Kings have outscored their opponents 21-10 during the five-game overall winning stretch.

"You can feel the room coming together," defenseman Willie Mitchell told the Kings' official website. "We've got a lot of work to do. If we get in (the playoffs), we can be a pretty scary team."

Los Angeles has not made things easy on the Blues while going 2-1-0 against them this season. Though Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves in St. Louis' 1-0 victory in the teams' last meeting Feb. 3, the Kings snapped a four-game home skid in the series with a 5-0 win Oct. 18.

Jonathan Quick made 27 saves in that contest and stopped 32 shots in last month's defeat at St. Louis. He has a 1.96 goals-against average during his personal four-game winning streak.

Kopitar has two goals and an assist against the Blues this season while Richards has one goal with two assists.

St. Louis has already clinched its first playoff berth since 2009 and leads second-place Vancouver by five points in the West, but the Blues have lost three of four since opening a seven-game road trip with a 2-1 win at Columbus on March 11.

Jaden Schwartz scored his second goal in as many NHL games Wednesday and David Backes added his team-leading 22nd, but St. Louis blew three one-goal leads en route to a 4-3 loss at Anaheim. The Blues fell to 37-1-1 when scoring at least three goals this season.

"Points are crucial for us, and we've got to bear down and be better in those situations," defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo said. "It's a little uncharacteristic of us to blow three one-goal leads, let alone one. We've been so good at that this year."

St. Louis' David Perron has four goals in his last six games overall, but Backes has been held without a point against the Kings in 2011-12.

Blues need a better full 60 minute effort in this one. BIG game considering we may play these guys first round.

Predicting 3-1 Blues!

Out of all of the teams that may finish 7th or 8th and play us....LA, Colorado, San Jose, Phoenix, Calgary.

I'll gladly take any of them...except LA. They are the team I want to stay away from. Anyone but LA.

:plusplus:

Beat them now and we may have a little confidence against them in Round 1. Finish the season on a hot streak and roll it into the playoffs.

That's what's concerning me right now: this little skid we're on. I want to be headed into the playoffs with a full head of steam and owning the #1 seed but we need to get back to our winning ways. A losing streak looms on the horizon if we drop this one tonight.

Blues 2
Kings 4

Whoever found that brought a shitstorm of database management skills to the office.

Blues: 4
Kings: 2

Elliott in net tonight? Blues are pissed from yesterday, and Kings get a beat down, and do San Jose a favor.

Dropped another point. Sending Schwartz out for the shootout is just too cutesy, and his shot was terrible.

I don't mind giving Schwartz the nod. Stewart is another matter though. 10th round, maybe.

Really don't see how STEWART is the guy you send out 4th. Not Pietro? Not Shattenkirk? Not Arnott? Come on, dude.. Stewart needs to sit, not have the weight of the whole game put on his shoulders.

Edit: obviously disappointing to lose in the shootout, but 1st and 3rd period were great hockey with quick basically saving the kings.

Oshie's shootout goal was amazing. Basically told Quick to take a seat and eat his salad.

I would also have accepted "take a seat and toss his salad"

I don't see the problem with giving Schwartz a shot. We suck at scoring on shootouts, so it's not gonna hurt. And, he's shown his offense is ready for the NHL. His shot was terrible though, but hindsight is always 20/20.

As for Stewart though, I was very surprised to see him. I have an idea of why he chose him though and I can kind of accept the logic. It's a bit of a stretch, but maybe Hitch saw it as a ~free chance to get Stewart some more confidence going again heading into the playoffs. I mean, he clearly didn't give us the best chance to win last night. But, maybe if he scored it would have sparked something. And, not that we should be playing fast and loose with our spot in the standings, we do have enough flexibility that it's not the end of the world when we get 1 point instead of 2 in that situation.

It's a reach for sure, but it's the best thing I can come up with.

Oh, and 13th shutout last night, ties franchise record.

A loss is a loss, sure, but last night's wasn't a bad loss. That was a heavyweight fight between Elliott and Quick and Elliott let in one more goal in the stupid skills competition. The Blues dominated for stretched, and yes, they were dominated in some stretches. But LA is scratching and clawing to get in the playoffs, so they were coming on hard. And like someone mentioned in flashchat, the Blues are without their 2nd line and 3rd d-pair, and yet it still took LA 65 minutes and 4 shootout rounds to beat the Blues.

It's frustrating the Blues have lost several games lately, but JR tweeted that Steen and D'ags took off the no contact jerseys. Help is on its way.
