Looks like he hits him upwards and into the face while he's obviously not looking and defenseless.. I hate the Wings bias as much as the next guy, but that's literally an illustration of the hits the league has explicitly said it doesn't want. Maybe I'd be more sympathetic if it weren't the Flyers.

The angle from behind the net looks like he blindsides him to the head. But, from the other angle, it looks like a clean hit to the chest. I don't mind it being reviewed, but I don't see a suspension coming from it.

From the video, the hit does look a tad late, but nothing that doesn't happen every game. The severity of this hit is completely due to the guy looking behind him.

I think it's marginal, but I don't have a major issue with this suspension. I do have a major issue, however, with the apparent disparity between Detroit players suspended and suspensions resulting from hitting a Detroit player. I really don't think the NHL or Shannahan ever thinks, "It wouldn't be a suspension, but he hit a Red Wing" or "It would be a suspension, but he plays for Detroit." But, it's still irksome that they don't review more hits than they do which helps promote the appearance of favoritism.

Shanahan's 3 reasons for for the suspension.

-No apparent injury (my god what would have he gotten it it was)

-A Red Wing was hit (automatic suspension)

-Red Wings have a long home win streak and they are a bunch of pussies who need all the help from the league to get rid of hits.

You don't admire your pass. You look where you are going. Period.
The "onus" as Shanahan likes to say...should be on Ericsson to protect himself and watch where he is going.
You can probably call this a charge and 2 minutes...maybe. But a suspension? I just don't understand.
Not everything that is a penalty is also a suspension.

And I fail to see how a hit like that can get a two game suspension, but a blindside cheap shot, massive punch to the face from Franzen after a GWG in OT, gets nothing...not even a fine. If the NHL is trying to protect players from hits to the head...then I'm not sure what's going on here.

Or the hit on Jackman by Datsyuk...that was a shot to Jackman's face where Datsyuk lunged up and into his face...but nothing came of that...not even a hearing.

Whatever happened to the rule that throwing a punch with your glove on was a suspension? Wasn't that a rule back in the day because of the hard plastic thumbs?

That's the thing. The NHL had gone f*cking stir-crazy with suspensions but a lot of these, the majority even, can be dealt with the penalty during the game and a fine. Why suspensions have become almost automatic is beyond me.

Shanahan needs to type that in 64 point font in a word document, print it, and frame it behind his desk so he reminds himself of that every day.
