Ahhhh $hit, we're talkin politiks in teh hockies forums

Post by F Keenan »

WASHINGTON -- Tim Thomas, one of two Americans on the Bruins' roster, chose not to attend today's ceremony at the White House, saying he believes the federal government is “out of control.”

Thomas issued the following statement about his absence: "I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers[sic] vision for the Federal government. Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL."

When asked if the incident overshadowed the visit, Bruins coach Peter Chiarelli answered "We're like a family. We have our issues.”

"You deal with them, move on, and try and support everyone. It may or may not. If it does, I hope it doesn't. The guys seemed to enjoy it. I enjoyed it," Chiarelli said.

All other players took part in the visit. Chiarelli said attendance today was not mandatory.

"I can require someone to attend a team event. If they don't, I can suspend him," Chiarelli said. "I'm not suspending Tim. Whatever his position is, it isn't reflective of the Boston Bruins nor my own. But I'm not suspending him."

The Bruins attended the White House and visited with President Obama to celebrate last year’s championship, a visit that is customary for the championship team of a major sport.

President Obama was presented with a Bruins jersey with number 11 at the event.

Mark Recchi, Tomas Kaberle, and Shane Hnidy, who are no longer on the Bruins, attended. First-year Bruins Joe Corvo and Benoit Pouliot did not participate in the East Room ceremony.

Thomas and Steven Kampfer are the only two Americans from last year’s team.
I support Thomas' decision and don't find it disrespectful at all, but I'm sure he'll come under fire for it.

I think he is being stupid.
Even it was George W, a president I didn't agree with most of the time...I would still be honored to meet the president.

To disagree, one doesn't have to be disagreeable.

Ehh, I'm with F Keenan...

And didn't some other athlete turn down going to the white house after winning a championship a few years ago? I don't think he said he did it for political reasons though. Forget who..

I think Thomas is a fool.

Why not go to the event so you can look the President in the eye and ask him yourself?

Thomas is a dope.

It's the president, it's a tradition. You're the only American on the team. Leave your politics at home.

I don't really care.
Agree/disagree... go/don't go. Pfft...I don't care.

Non issue really.

Personally, I'd go no matter who was in the White House. It would be an honor to meet/shake hands with the President and see the White House. It's an experience I could tell my kids/grandkids. Thomas doesn't seem to care about that...so whatever. Fine by me.

It's his choice, I'm cool with that. Albert Pujols didn't go to the White House either time with the Cardinals, in '06 or after this year's World Series. But he didn't say it was because of his political affiliations, and therefore, it was a non-story.

Thomas will take some heat on this and then we'll all forget about it.

That's because Obama is the only person allowed in the White House without a valid birth certificate.

I admire what he did. The fact that we revere one man like little (Franking) schoolchildren revere Hanson or Miley Cyrus is freakin' absurd. Screw meeting anyone and pissing our pants with joy over it.

Thomas gets it.

If I was sitting in a Dunkin Donuts enjoying a donut and the mayor, who I have a complete utter distaste for, walked in and introduced himself, I would still show the due respect and shake the mans hand even though I can't stand him. The problem is people get pissy and hate the man (or woman) in charge and completely forget about respect for the office.

100% agree. I would go but I am not negatively impacted whatsoever by him not going, so I don't have a problem with it.

I don't think Pujols was an American in 06 and isn't a St. Louis Cardinal anymore. Tim Thomas is still an American and hopefully he declines any invitation to play for the US Olympic team in the future. He could have avoided the problem by keeping his mouth shut.

Try getting a replacement birth certificate from Hawaii, especially one a decade after Hawaii became a state. Note the requirements and rules they use to give out a sealed one.

On a side note, my respect factor for Tim Thomas has done a complete 180, in the right direction.

Because he didn't pay obeisance to the king, he can't represent the country in his chosen line of work.

What a tremendous load of bullshit that is.
