Stewart Suspension.....3 Games

Post by DaDitka »

In a phone conversation with Brendan Shanahan Stewart was reprimanded for his running the Redwings' Niklas Kronwall into the boards from behind.

Shanahan stated the he felt the action deserved a three game suspension, however after reviewing the Blues previous 10 games, Shanahan noted Stewart's absence form those games and let him go with time served.

The Shanahan phone conference was at 10am today.

Stewart said he felt the conversation went well.

Expect a decision sometime this afternoon.

Stewart also said that he thought Kronwall was going to reverse check and the play just went wrong. There was no intent to injure.

If you watch the replay, you can see that Stewart is taking an angle at Kronwall and at the last second, Kronwall cuts into Stewart and slams on the brakes. Stewart expecting a check from Kronwall, dishes out a check of his own...and sends him head first into the boards.

The play isn't near as "dirty" once you slow it down and analyze it. I'm thinking Red Wings fans will be pissed at the decision once Shanahan announces it. A lot of them are calling for 5-8 games. I say he gets 2 or 3, tops.

Three games seems reasonable. It was a bad hit, but Stewart had no prior issues and Kronwall did lean into him before the push. Stewart has been MIA for weeks anyway, so we should be able to play through it just fine.

Shanahan kicks ass at this.

However...when he says that Stewart was "directly behind Kronwall", that's not true...he was behind him but off to the side at an angle. Stewart wasn't directly behind Kronwall until Kronwall cut in front of Stewart at the last second, and Stewart shoves him thinking there is going to be a reverse check coming.
Other than that, I agree with Shanny completely.

Considering the 15 seconds before the hit was pretty much the first time I'd noticed him all year, I think we can withstand this three game stretch.

I'm actually kinda excited to see what happens these three games. It gives us a chance to maybe see what Grachev can do on a better line. He didn't take advantage of it last night but he might have a chance to Thursday since he will have skated with them a bit today and tomorrow. IMO.

From watching the video, it seems to me that Kronwall was still pretty far away from the boards when Stewart shoved him, and he didn't even shove him all that hard. A lot of emphasis was made that Kronwall was in a defenseless position, which I don't think is completely true either.

I'm good with this. I think it gives Stewie a few games in the press box and maybe he'll get his head on straight. Saves Hitchcock having to scratch him. Blues played a hell of a game last night after he got sent off.

Meh, if this was against someone other than the wings, stew would have only got one game, two max.

I think 3 games is reasonable. And, like somebody said, it might give him time to clear his head. So, this could actually be a good thing. And, if the comes back and lights it up, I think we can take that as indisputable proof that knocking the shit out of Red Wing players has good longterm results.

Hell if anything this might pull him out of his slump by giving him a break. He'll be chomping at the bit next time he suits up.

Also: Good to see that our "Depth at Forward" offseason is already proving it's worth

3 games seems fair. He needs the break anyway. Maybe watching the team play real well without him will snap him out of it.
