Blues Claim Chorney Off Waivers, Colaiacovo to IR

Post by abc789987 »

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Armstrong announced Tuesday the club has claimed defenseman Taylor Chorney off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.

In addition, defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo has been placed on Injured Reserve after suffering an upper body injury in the second period of the Blues’ season opener on Saturday, Oct. 8 vs. Nashville. Colaiacovo will be eligible to return to the lineup this Sunday, Oct. 16 when the Blues visit the Anaheim Ducks.

Chorney, 24, posted four points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 12 games with the Edmonton Oilers and 16 points (3 goals, 13 assists) in 46 games with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Oklahoma City Barons last season.

Overall, the 6’1, 189-pound defenseman has accumulated seven points including a goal and six assists in 56 career NHL games with Edmonton.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native was originally drafted by Edmonton in the second round, 36th overall, of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

I like the pick-up. Let's Cole be the #1 guy in Peoria and we get a 7th defenseman who has NHL experience while Carlo is out.

Nice work.

Chorney was a 7th defenseman on EDMONTON last season. Edmonton's 3, 4, 5, and 6th defensemen would have no business being on an AHL team. I watch a lot of Oilers games due to Khabibulin, and with the exception of Smid and Whitney, none of their defensemen could crack an ECHL lineup.

But I guess Chorney is still pretty young. Maybe he'll find his game.

You don't think they picked this guy up to fill in at Peoria while we bring someone else up from there?

It would be ridiculous if Chorney plays on the NHL squad in front of Cole.

On the beach in Florida laughing at us.

I agree with the above posts. Only thing I would say Ruutu in addition to that is that I think it's just that the guy HAS NHL experience. If absolutely NOTHING else, he is familiar with the speed of the NHL game and also has solid AHL experience. I guess we'll get plenty of chances to re-rate that analysis but at least he's got SOMETHING. And he's 24 so it's not like he's fresh out of the gate in general.

Hope he at least can do average. Or completely unnoticeable which is the best compliment a 6th Dman can receive.

I think if we got in a situation were we need our #7 to play , they may bring up Cole. But as mentioned above this move was to keep from bringing him up to sit in the box most nights

Talent Analysis

He is slightly undersized for the defensive position but makes up for it with tremendous hockey sense and puck-moving skills. Chorney is a terrific skater, and is usually a sound positional defender. He plays a very heady game and is mature beyond his years.

Chorney is not a physical defender but projects to be a top-four defenseman at the NHL level--mainly because of his sound hockey sense and ability to lead the transition game. He has the ability to quarterback a power play and is a natural leader having been captain at almost every level he's played including internationally with TEAM USA.

History

2003-04: Played for Shattuck-St. Mary's and scored 12-44-56 points in 74 games.

2004-05: Represented the United States at a pair of U18 tournaments in Europe and still played for Shattuck-St.Mary's. Chorney was captain for the Americans at the April tournament.

2005-06: Invited to the USA WJC summer camp in August of 2005, Chorney was a standout despite being one of the youngest players in attendance. Played in the 2006 WJC in Vancouver and was a freshman at North Dakota.

2006-07: The UND (WCHA) defenseman netted eight goals and 31 points through 39 games this season, personal-bests for Chorney. He again joined up with the US National U20 Team, where he registered six points (1g+5a) in seven games at the WJC; he took Bronze with the US.

2008-09: Chorney opted out of collegiate play, choosing instead to test out the professional hockey game. In 68 games with the Springfield Falcons (AHL), the D-man scored five goals and 21 points. He also got a look at the NHL, but failed to register any points in the two games he spent with the Oilers.
Sounds like the Blues acquired someone who plays like Colaiacovo to replace Colaiacovo, only the the 24-year old is more of a leader. If he can play at the NHL level, he is a steal.
