For ONE MILLION DOLLARS

And thus, we have 8 NHL-ready (debatable) defensemen.

Jackman
Pietrangelo
Colaiacovo
Polak
Shattenkirk
Cole
Huskins
Nikitin

Still no present-day bona fide #1 guy, but we've had worse defensive corps before.

With his signing, we're sitting at $47,808,332 in salary. The cap floor is in reach!

We shall call him..."Foreskin." Useless and something that will be gone in within a year.

I honestly can't tell y'all much about Huskins from watching the SJ games these past few years, though that may be a good thing - he just kinda seems to get his shit done and not draw too much attention.

You don't think Pietrangelo is a bonafide #1 defenseman???? The dudes at the World Cup sure thought he was.

That description sounds like Mike Weaver. When I heard about this signing, I scratched my head. I knew we weren't going to do anything with a huge impact, but still...

But I remember when Mike Weaver was signed a few of us on the board (myself included) ridiculed the signing. As it turns out, the guy was pretty solid and I think a lot of us would take him back in a heartbeat. So, I will cop out and say that I'll have to wait and see with Huskins. I don't know much about him otherwise.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder also posted a plus-8 rating -- his fourth consecutive season of being a plus player (plus-43).
+43 in his career is nice..but yeah dmiles said it right, Mike Weaver for sure.

He will be, but isn't yet. He's currently like an Episode IV Luke Skywalker... at the Cantina scene.

Actually, "Big Mike Weaver" is a great way to describe him. I'm trying to remember now if he was on the PK unit in SJ, and I'm leaning towards yes.

Edit: some quick googling reveals that Huskins was indeed a mainstay of the SJ penalty kill, which makes his +/- rating a little bit more impressive/interesting. I do miss Mike Weaver.

I have no doubt in my mind that we would have had at least 5 more wins last year if Weaver were still here.

That said, Huskins had only 18 hits and 58 blocked shots last year, and he's only appeared in more then 50 games once in the last three years. You all know I was expecting very - very little this free agency, but this signing is borderline useless. I can only figure they signed him to be the #7 because they don't want a guy like Cole watching a lot more then playing.

... and there's the #5 defenseman.

Maybe that's why they signed him (tempting bait for the injury gods)- he can get injured and miss time in lieu of a Petro or Shattenkirk.
