Found dead in his apartment. No details yet. Only 28 years old. Tragic.

Terrible news...RIP. I know that he was a fan favorite in Minnesota, and everyone talks about what a good guy he was off of the ice.

The Rangers seem cursed. Two players of their players have died at an early age over the last couple of years.

He missed time with a concussion this year and there is already speculation of a possible correlation, hopefully the facts will come out soon. It's always terrible when people speculate.

That was my first thought: what the hell happened?! He doesn't seem like the type who was messing around with drugs or anything. Very sad indeed.

You all know me as an adamant hater of the Rangers, but you always hate to see tragic news like this. Condolences to the Boogaard family and the Rangers organization.

You said it. When I was 21, I was flipping through the newspaper and noticed in the obits a girl I went to HS with had died. Now every time I see relatively young deaths in the news, I start thinking today could be the day. You just never know.

Damn.. just saw the video of his last goal on NHL.com - I watched that game when it aired and really enjoyed how genuinely happy he looked when he got that goal.

Shame :\

Not to rain on the Boogaard grievances, but to go back what I was saying about the Rangers being cursed, I am thinking tonight about my old friend Roman Lyashenko. He was also a Rangers player at the time of his death/suicide. We lived near each other when he was playing in Kalamazoo in the Dallas Stars organization and I got to know him well. :(

I'm happy to see the Boogaard's family donated his brain to Boston University, as did Bob Probert's. So much is yet to be discovered about the effects of contact sports on the brain, and if there's one good thing that can come out of this, it's the hope that researchers can further develop knowledge about how to keep players safer.

Boogaard's cause of death: Accidental mixture of alcohol and oxycodone
Posted by: Michael Russo under Wild off-season news Updated: May 20, 2011 - 12:33 PM 16 commentsprint

As family members prepare to lay former Wild winger Derek Boogaard to rest Saturday morning in his hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office revealed Friday afternoon that Boogaard's cause of death was an accidental mixture of alcohol and oxycodone toxicity.
Boogaard, 28, was found dead in his Minneapolis apartment a week ago today at 6:10 p.m. by his brothers, Ryan and Aaron.
It was reported last Saturday by the New York Post that Boogaard had spent his final days in the NHL/NHLPA Substance Abuse and Behavoral Program. The Star Tribune reported last Saturday that when Boogaard missed most of the Wild’s training camp in 2009 and the first two weeks of the season under the guise of a concussion, he also entered Stage 1 of the Substance Abuse & Behavioral Health Program.

Boogaard is survived by his two brothers, sister, half brother Curtis and parents, Len and Joanne. Several NHL players, including many with the Wild, as well as Wild owner Craig Leipold, GM Chuck Fletcher and those in the Wild training staff, are expected to attend his funeral Saturday.

That's not a good mix. I knew way to many people in college that liked to play around with pharmaceuticals. Just stay away.

Sucks though. RIP man.
