Prediction: The Blues will name defenseman Barret Jackman as team captain for 2011-12. There's a lot of fan support for David Backes, but don't be surprised to see Jackman receive the "C," and he qualifies based on experience, leadership and toughness.
It's a prediction...I don't think there's any inside info behind it. We'll wait and see. My guess is we don't hear about anything after July 1, after free agency, and maybe not even until training camp.

I would say training camp.
They hold off on such things because they don't know what the roster will look like come August. Not that it will happen to the Blues but in the past it's not unheard of for a free agent to step in and be named captain before he's played a game in the sweater.

Yeah, training camp is when I would expect it and not a moment sooner, unless they consider Jackman untouchable and are unwilling to give it to anybody else no matter what happens.

I know that Jackman is the longest tender Blues member here, but I highly doubt they would make him captain. But this is the BLUES we are talking about here.

This organization's choice for captains has been piss-poor since Pronger left.

I'd wait until training camp (especially to make sure that Jackman is still on the team-IF they want to give it to him). Personally, I'd give it to Backes, as there is a reasonable chance that Jackman may not be with The Blues for more than one more year (and might even be traded near the deadline, if Cole and Nikitin play well, and The Blues have picked up another veteran defenceman before the season starts). Backes should be around for several years. That will give some consistency to the captaincy.
If this guy we any kind of 'presence' in the locker room why have we had these problems with Bergie and Oshie.......
He's certainly doesn't lead by example on the ice.
I have finally come around a bit on believe this team needs some veteran leadership (thank you TJ), but apparently this has been an issue with TJ for two years...I din't see Jackman step up then. (Though he did have TJ over while suspend to watch the game).
I'll say this....while I don't believe it..... if they truly believe he'd be a good captain, more power to him. At least he'd be doing something to earn that pay check. I could care less if he wears the 'C' his last season in St. Louis.......as long as it's his last season in St. Louis.
