Re: Blues absence from playoffs 'unexcused'
Just think how much better our "young" players will be next year!
Re: Blues absence from playoffs 'unexcused'
Pfft...they need to add a real impact player or two to what they currently have, not make lateral moves or add 3rd liners...which is what I suspect they will do given the current ownership situation.
I'd feel a LOT better about this team's playoff chances if we added just one or two key pieces to it.
Not holding my breath though.

That's exactly the kind of guy we needed that we now have. One or two more like him and now we're just getting greedy and won't have any prospects/picks for the better part of a decade... which takes us right back to the free agency market and its overpaying ways. With Stewart though, I won't say it'll make this team magical overnight, but clearly with him and Perron in the lineup (hopefully ) for an entire year... you can't tell me with a straight face that that won't make a difference.
Hell even just having Perron in the lineup all this year would've made a difference.

Re: Blues absence from playoffs 'unexcused'
The team needs a legitimate 1st line forward and a veteran defensman. And to stay healthy.
If Tarasanko can come in and score 15-20 and everyone stays healthy this team could make the playoffs next year... and sometime soon (dare to dream) actually win a single playoff round. Maybe not next year, but in the next 2-3 years. I know that's some crazy pie in the sky wishful thinking, but I believe. Someday, most of the players on this current squad will be good enough to get to the second round of the playoffs. Probably.
What a glorious day that will be.
But we should start slow. Maybe the goal for 2011-2012 will be to make the playoffs. Then in 2012-2013 our goal can be to win a single game in the playoffs. Then by 2013-2014 we can move up to the level where they can maybe win an actual series. Maybe.

I don't think any of that will make a difference if Halak doesn't get his game together.

The legitimate 1st line forward is a necessity...no question.kodos wrote:The team needs a legitimate 1st line forward and a veteran defensman. And to stay healthy.
I think a veteran defenseman is less of a need, but obviously would be nice.
And with little organizational depth up front...yes...staying healthy means everything. If a key guy gets hurt, that hurts this team quite a bit.

Re: Blues absence from playoffs 'unexcused'
The one thing I'm not worried about his defense. Heck, both goals scored last night were from areas forwards should be checking those players.
The area that does concern me, still - the lack of a true defensive center capable of shutting down an opposing team's top line. With Perron (if he returns), Stewart, Oshie, Berglund, Backes, and MacDonald - that's two top lines which should score on a regular basis barring another rash of injuries to 3 of the 6 at the same friggin' time. Add in Tarasenko - where is he going to play? 3rd/4th line?? McRae finally looked like he belonged last night doing something other than just faceoffs.
So what are the Blues looking for at forward? Depth and defense, IMO. Right now, they keep having to pull one of those 6 to play defense on the 3rd line. If Cracknell could skate better, he might be worth trying out at that 3rd line center spot. He was doing fine at both ends of the ice when they moved him there.
Defensively - Shattenkirk and Cole are solid pair. Pietrangelo can play with anyone they want him, too, and likely will be a 21-year old Captain next season. Polak is solid and can play with anyone. Nikitin's issue is size when forced to actually play defense behind his own net, but his offensive skills make up for that. Colaiacovo is decent. And Jackman will likely be back. That's 7 d-men to work with.
So - the issue is depth and what do the Blues want to add? Another quality scoring forward - which are hard to get? The defensive forward they sorely lack right now? Another defensive d-man for depth? They have enough offensive d-men now.
Only problem - friggin' Dollar Dave trying to sell the team and continuing his idiotic philosophy of not spending money to make the team more "saleable."

I completely forgot about Alex Steen. There is the 3rd line checking center that is currently missing.
