Question?????????

Post by 18tonytwist »

Since the NHL put in the rules to "allow more offense" i.e. obstruction calls, why is it in such a scenario players like Boyes and even Kariya last year are having trouble lighting the lamp? Does anyone have any stats to show overall avg up or down since 2005? Just curious.

It's simple. Players have better opportunities to score, but at the same time, goalies have gotten better. 80s goalies sucked.

Make the nets bigger?

Actually, I'd like to see an increased ice surface. Unfortunately this will never happen due to the revenue lost in "missing" seats.

4-on-4 is an alternative and more likely however (c. 2025?)

Frankly, I think we should recruit every player over 6'4" and create a new league and name it NHLXL

edit: grammar sucked

I don't think this is it. I think the overall talent level today is higher...

I thing the main reason scoring is down is because the league is more competitive now. BAck in the 80's there were 21 teams in the league and 16 got into the playoffs. This made the regular season basically meaningless which led to a much more wide open style. Why bother with rigid defensive schemes when the games mean almost nothing?

Today it's much harder for teams to get into the playoffs, which leads to every single regular season game being much more important which leads to a much greater emphasis on winning at all costs... and defense wins more games then offense.

I haven't paid close enough attention to how scoring has fluctuated this year from last, but they measured every goalie's legs last offseason and assigned each goalie a maximum pad size. IIRC, Halak was able to get bigger pads than most people his height because he has longer legs or something.

Don't mean to change the subject but I also have a question, Does anyone know if there is a website that you can see the draft picks for 2011 like what picks the blues have in 2011?

Considering the standings aren't final.......no.

Draft position isn't settled.

And currently we are in the bottom ten which means we'll have a top ten pick and wont have to give Colorado our first.

In the case of the two players you mentioned, all I will say is that missing the net with your shot has nothing to do with NHL rules.
