It's official, Colorado gets our 1st rounder this year, we get their 2nd rounder, and we keep our 1st rounder for 2012.

Pick will be transferred to Colorado as part of condition of earlier trade

By Chris Pinkert - St. Louis Blues Online
The Blues didn't win Tuesday's NHL Draft Lottery, so their first-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (No. 11 overall) will be transferred to the Colorado Avalanche as part of a trade that brought Chris Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk to St. Louis.

In exchange, the Blues will get Colorado's second-round pick at this year's Draft.

Barring a trade, the Blues won't have a first-round pick this summer.

The order of selection for the first 14 picks was determined by final season standings and Tuesday's lottery. The remaining order of selection for the other 16 clubs will be determined based on postseason results.

The 2011 NHL Entry Draft will be held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. The first round will take place on Friday, June 24 and the subsequent rounds (two through seven) will take place on Saturday, June 25.

Draft Lottery Results

1. Edmonton Oilers
2. Colorado Avalanche
3. Florida Panthers
4. New Jersey Devils
5. New York Islanders
6. Ottawa Senators
7. Atlanta Thrashers
8. Columbus Blue Jackets
9. Boston Bruins (from Toronto)
10. Minnesota Wild
11. Colorado Avalanche (from St. Louis)
12. Carolina Hurricanes
13. Calgary Flames
14. Dallas Stars

Well Avs fans are probably jumping up and down right now, that was the best case scenario for them (for a guaranteed transfer of the pick anyway). Doesn't matter what years' draft you are talking about, two picks in the top 11? wow. They're going to be scary in a few seasons.

I could see them trying to get some good defenseman especially with that #2 pick, with Foote retiring they will need some leadership, hopefully Johnson can provide that for them(also Jay will help them out). but yeah they were scary when they were in the playoffs 2 years ago. Also they could try and get a goaltender early.

Not so fast, Sparky. High draft picks don't automatically pan out... you know that.

Any Avs fan jumping up and down because they got our first round pick this year instead of next year, doesn't understand what's going on.
Based in what we know right now about the quality of the next two drafts, next year's 1st round pick is a much better one to have than this year's.

The 2011 NHL Draft Lottery airs at 8 pm ET on Versus; Who should fans covet?

For fans of 16 NHL franchises, the future begins on Wednesday or Thursday. Yet for 14 other teams, it’s already about October 2011.

The latter group will want to follow the action tonight, as Versus and NHL.com will carry the 2011 NHL Entry Draft Lottery at 8 pm ET.

The Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators are the only teams with a chance to earn the top pick of the 2011 draft. After that, no team can move down more than one spot from their season-ending position. For a deeper rundown of how exactly the draft lottery works, click here.

Of course, beyond who gets the top pick, the bigger question might be: who should fans want? As Joe pointed out, there isn’t a clean-cut No. 1 in this year’s draft. Some even call it one of the weakest in recent years.

That being said, there are some prospects who are gaining some attention. The league’s Central Scouting Service released their final rankings (with heavy hearts on the heels of EJ McGuire’s passing) recently, with North American and European players ranked separately.

First, here are the top five North American skaters according to Central Scouting:

1. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (forward)
2. Gabriel Landeskog (forward)
3. Jonathan Huberdeau (forward)
4. Dougie Hamilton (defenseman)
5. Nathan Beaulieu (defenseman)

Next, here are the top five European skaters:

1. Adam Larsson (defenseman)
2. Mika Zibanejad (forward)
3. Jonas Brodin (defenseman)
4. Joel Armia (forward)
5. Dmitri Jaskin (forward)

There’s also the highest ranked North American and European goalies, if you want to delve deeper.

We’ll keep you informed regarding where each NHL team lands in the top 16 picks of the draft. The playoffs will decide where the rest of the chips shall fall.
Thank God!!!!!

Got it out of the way. Look at it this way, if we finish in the top ten next year, we'll all be happy and no one cares about our draft pick. If we suck and miss the playoffs again, we'll be damn glad to have that pick.

We've gone over this plenty here and there is no need to rehash this again.

The Blues are far better off unloading the pick this year.

Lookin like a #20 pick next year will be a better chance of getting keeper than a #11 this year. And, typically in a weaker draft, after the top few, there prolly won't be much difference in the prospect the Avs get at 11 than the one we get at 32 or whatever. I was actually hoping for this scenario.
