Blues Trade Deadline Grade
Pretty simple. How did the Blues do?
My grade: F.
Holy suckiness. It's like they forgot the deadline was today. Mediocrity is killing this team. They play well enough to give people hope. Oh, maybe they're turning the corner, they've won 4 in a row, making a trade could disrupt things....but you know they aren't going anywhere even if they make it to the playoffs. You're kidding yourself if you believe they will. There absolutely should have been some guys who were moved today.

The more of the personnel moves I see from the new regime, the more they remind me of the old regime. F indeed.

Now, I may not be getting the whole story, but we didn't make a deal for any of our UFAs?
Essentially, we're going to let guys walk after the season ends without getting anything (not even draft picks) in return.
I vote "F" as well. Although, if we couldn't get anything of value in return...

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
It was reported that Kariya and Tkachuk both passed on using their no trade clause. Not much happened today. I don't really hate this trade deadline. This team doesn't need draft picks and it doesn't need a fire sale. It also is not good enough to make a run at emptying the farm system for a top level offensive talent. It would have been dumb if they went either extreme today. I'm interested in seeing what D'Agastoni can do for the Blues. He just needs a shot, is what I believe.

Disappointed we didnt trade Kariya for something, but what can you do when the little prick said no to his trade clause. Overall there was no one to trade for that I heard of. Would have been nice to get Stimpy back. Minor league swaps, see what will come with em.

I voted B. We didn't do anything spectacular, but we also didn't do anything stupid (although I am concerned about the fact that we just let Palushaj go). Considering our two old farts stuck to their NTCs, not much we can do.
Pleau wasn't kidding - it's really hard to trade people from a team that underperformed as badly as we did this season.

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
I'm still not a fan of the Palushaj deal. Yea, the guy didn't make strides this year in the AHL, but the kid is making the transition from college to pros. Its tough to say that he is already a wash here at the age of 20. I just feel the kid deserved at least one more year in a Rivermen jersey to prove himself. D'Agostini will do nothing for this club imo. I hope I'm wrong.

I voted C. No one really did much this year. So we are pretty much just like every other team.

They didn't help the team but they also didn't hurt the team. Status quo isn't always awesome but it also isn't the end of the world. Can't really give a good grade on yesterday's activities until after the season is over. Time will tell...

Voted C myself.
From what I understand, we tried to shop our UFA’s just couldn’t get the deals done.
We didn’t ‘need’ to make any moves. We probably won’t make the playoffs and even if we do we’re likely one and done so there was no reason to be buyers.
We’re trying to build a team, not rebuild, so there was no reason to sell.
I’m just glad we didn’t part with Bergie or Perron, so all in all it was just another day on the calendar for the Blues and that’s a good thing IMO.

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
If guys won't waive a No-Trade, there's nothing management can do. You can't fault them for not moving those guys.
You also can't fault them for not getting someone. You have to assume the prices were too high or the returns were too low and that based on the offers, it was better to retain the players.
I am not worried about it. We have salary coming off the books at the end of the year, and we can play in the markets after the seasons.
I vote "C" because that's just plain average - not good, not bad.

I'm not saying it's impossible, just improbable.

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
I graded B.
Wasn't there a website last year that kept daily probabilities of teams making the playoffs? I can't find that.. thought I had it bookmarked.
*** Answered my own question.

A win tonight (big game) and we are only 1 pt. out of a playoff spot...one point. I would hardly classify that as improbable.
I think our chances are as good of better than any of the other teams around us, especially with how we have been playing lately.

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
Those stats also support the theory that this is a huge game for the Blues.
First column is the percent chance of getting in if the Stars Win
Second is the percent chance if the Blues win.
a 10+ point swing on both. that's pretty big.
Code: Select all
Stars vs Blues 8:30 PM
Stars 22.3 10.6
Blues 8.4 18.7
Second is the percent chance if the Blues win.

Re: Blues Trade Deadline Grade
I gave them a B for what they did & didn't do. I'll explain.
Picking up D’Agostini as a short term rental might help while KT's out, and as we've seen before some players just need a change of scenery. Sure we let a highly touted prospect go but with some of the depth we have we might as well get used to that soon.
We didn't trade KT but if he's thinking of playing another season then he's sure to play for another contract, whether it be here or elsewhere, and if we couldn't get a good return for him then let him finish his career out here with some strong play.
Same with Kariya on the return. He's starting to play like he knows what he's doing and he's surely going to be looking for a payday when he hits the market so lets finally get a little return back on our investment. I'm sure that there weren't a lot of teams willing to part with anything significant based on this season, let alone the past 3.
I see the Stastny move as a salary dump, albeit minor. Couple this with the contracts coming off of the books and raise in ticket prices and it gives management a little leverage when approaching the investers for justification for more spending in the off season. IIRC we went after Gaborik last season and Kovalchuk this season so I tend to believe they are willing to make some productive moves sooner rather than later. I know the whole 'rebuilding' process is wearing thin but they must be aware of this too & I'm optimistic that there's a method to the madness.
Just my .02
