Now what if I were to say he went on a drug bust with Ryan Leaf? Is that too soon?
I have a litmus test for determining if a joke is too soon. You know how you can get a crappy song stuck in your head? Well, I think that the only way to get that song out of your head is by replacing it with a worse song. Once that worse song is in your head, the old one doesn't stick anymore.

So, I think the EJ story is really the only story that is too soon, because I can't get that one out of my head, until EJ is playing again and something bad happens.

Not that I believe any of what Eklund says, beause 99.99999999% of the time hes just pulling shat out his ass, but whenever the Blues are mentioned it does provide something entertaining in the offseason and something to think about.

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/B ... ey/1/21644

Even though we all know his sources include his dog and the mailman so none of it is legit, if it in fact did happen, I'm wondering what the most the Blues would be willing to part with and what the least the Sens would accept. I'd imagine it would include at least one of the following: Kariya, Boyes, Perron, McKee, Our 1st rounder and then the deal would be topped off with mid level players, decent prospects and draft picks.

Because we'll never actually find out what it would take when hes playing in Philly, San Jose or wherever. I just found it an interesting topic to ponder.

The Blues have 5 picks in the draft; Rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. Think of the money and time that the Blues invested in Jarmo and the scouting staff throughout the year. Do not undervalue that first round pick, even if it is at 17. In a way, moving into the top 5 nullifies the time and finances committed to this area of the organization.

However, should Jarmo's evaluation determine that there is a lack of talent outside of the top 5-10 players, that could be the justification to trade that pick. Unless that situation arises, keep the draft pick.

The more I think about this the more I love the idea. Heatley is a special kind of player. A real bonifide superstar and a real difference maker.

Getting him on the team would be worth the high price. Well, it would be worth a high price. Depending on what exactly the price is.

Exactly. If Jarmo looks at the Blues depth chart of picks he would like to get and none of them were like "must haves" in the first round, especially the top 10/15, I could see the Blues trying to make a swing trade.

What I do NOT want to see is something along the lines of "Blues first rounder '09, Pietrangelo, Berglund to the Sens for Heatley." IMO thats the only kind of trade that will get him here and the one that I would avoid like the plague. My gut tells me nothing will happen and Jarmo will go with the best available that he likes at 17. And that's fine by me.

I go back to this.... Why does anyone want to give up much in trade for Heatley and pay him over 7 mil a year before at least waiting til July 1 and see what it would take to sign Hossa, Havlat, Gaborik, etc and not give up anything? As I mentioned before, due to the economy, UFA's in baseball with very few exceptions, didn't cash in like they expected, and lot's of the usual big players in the market (NYR for example) are in cap trouble. It could be a buyers market in a couple weeks, unless O-Ottawa is reasonable now. Otherwise, check out the others July 1 if they have 7mil laying around for 1 guy.

First, I'd love to see Heatley on the Blues roster.

Second, if you were him, you're telling me you wouldn't want to get the hell out of ATL and never look back?

Because the Blues don't have the cap space to make any big signings this summer. They still need to qualify/re-sign Polak and probably one of Winchester and Crombeen, not to mention adding a capable backup to Mason. That's why a trade with some salary going the other way would make some sense. Of course it always depends on how much we're giving up in this trade.

Then again if the Blues could somehow trade McKee, Kariya or Jackman and free up an additional 2-3 million in cap room, and then sign one of the Czech/Slovak trio, that would probably be a good way to go too. Either way, I don't see the Blues doing anything major till next summer when Kariya, Tkachuk and McKee's contracts expire and we have 12 million in cap room to work with, barring any trades involving any of the aforementioned players obviously.

Duhhh. No shit. I don't think taking bad contracts is what O-Ottawa has in mind when they are listening to trade offers. They are talking about the kid line guys, EJ, Petro, picks, etc. Hell yes, if they could trade Jackman, McKee, Kariya, etc then it would be great, but that ain't happening.

Heatley >>>>>>>>> Hossa, Havlat, Gaborik

I consider Heatley a top 10 in the league kind of guy... and he's a proven playoff performer and character guy.

I agree that we shouldn't give up too much, but I would give up something.

True, but Heatley wants out, which means Ottawa doesn't wanna risk their 7.5 million dollar investment half-assing it through the season, and for that reason what Heatley brings back will be a bit smaller. Not to mention, the economic climate as it is, not very many teams have the cap space or dollars to take on an additional 7.5 million. Again, that drops Heatley's value and also the number of teams competing for him. Also, Kariya and McKee's contracts expire after next season, so it's not as if they'd be taking on long term money if one of those guys were involved in a deal for Heatley.

I'm sure one of the kid liners will probably go the other way, but not with a significant contract as well, or else the Blues will be over the cap, and still need to qualify or re-sign Polak, Crombeen/Winchester, and add a backup goalie. In your words, this deal ain't happening without Ottawa swallowing one of our big contracts as well.
