Can someone explain to me how Brewer is the only -1 defensemen in this game? The only other "minus" player was Cam Janssen? Or is this still bashing Brewer who regularly finds himself on the negative side of the GF/GA statistic?
I was at the game last night and actually had the thought in my mind (briefly) that Murray had changed his system up a bit for the first period. The defensemen were pinching and making nice tape to tape passes. The Blues looked like a completely different team. Plus, 16 shots on goal. We came out flat in the 2nd period and looked like the same boring Blues that have showed up more times than not this year. We got 3 shots on goal in the 2nd period. Fu(king ridiculous. We buzzed a little in the 3rd, but nothing spectacular. We went O-fer, again, on the PP. Took a dump on the penalty kill. Mason's save in the 3rd period was about the only positive in this game. Playing .500 hockey at home isn't going to get us anywhere.
My biggest problem last night was the Blues' lack of urgency. When we had that power-play (the one that caused a shorty) the Blues were not even skating. Oshie and Kariya need to sit during power-plays more than anyone else on the rink. Those two constantly skate the puck in then turn it over instantly when they hit the top of the face-off circle.
Plus, after Mason turned the puck over on that play, it seemed like the Blues completely gave up. I know that goal was a kick in the groin, but freakin skate, get some chances and you never know what may happen! Look at the Avs-Flyers game last night- the Flyers were down 5-2 late, but came back to make it 5-4 within the last like 6 minutes of the game. Yea they still lost, but at least they showed some effort late which will probably give them some momentum to go into the next game.
My point is you never give up. The Blues laid an egg in the last 10-12 minutes of the game and it was shameful.
I thought that was about the lamest interference penalty I have ever seen in the national hockey league. I was all "omg, Brewer actually hit someone!!!!" and then "How on the green earth of God was that interference?" Really, really poorly officiated.
I am fine with them making those calls, but they they need to call it everytime someone impedes a player after they have bumped the puck ahead or behind them. I specifically watched for it the rest of the game, and there were literally dozens of times that the same call could have been made on either team.
Follow that up with the phantom handpass that was actually a hand pass then wasn't a handpass and then on replay was an uncalled handpass.... wow, nice work, guys.
When the Blues worked hard, they owned the ice. Unfortunately, they didn't work hard for long stretches in this game. Either Murray needs a new schtick or we need a new coach because the motivation and tenacity are not present out there.
I was at the game last night as well & the best/worst part of it was one of the guys behind us getting jumped by a group of guys who beat the snot out of him. Granted this guy was running his mouth & was a b's fan but damn it slowed us down from getting out of there.
