The St. Louis Blues attempt to make up for one that got away when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
The Blues dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the lowly Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, allowing the tying goal with 10 seconds remaining in the third period.
"We got a point and move on," Blues coach Craig Berube said. "We've got to be better. Each individual on the team has to be accountable for his play. We need more guys in my opinion that have to play better. We have some guys that are aloof out there right now. Aloof with the puck and just a little bit casual. We need everybody on board to do the right things and play the right way."
St. Louis has split the first two contests of a four-game trip.
The Blues appeared that they might skate away with the win after Pavel Buchnevich scored the go-ahead goal with 1:19 remaining in the third period.
"It's a frustrating one ... we need every point we can get right now," Blues captain Ryan O'Reilly said.
The Maple Leafs are coming off a 4-1 home victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. Jack Campbell made a season-best 45 saves to highlight the win.
"That's as calm and poised as he's looked all season," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said of Campbell. "He had several difficult saves there, but he was calm throughout the game, and that made the coach feel good."
Auston Matthews scored his team-leading 33rd goal of the season just 21 seconds into the first period to extend his point streak to nine games (eight goals, 10 assists).
Matthews, who added an assist on Michael Bunting's goal in the third, left for the dressing room late in the period after hitting the crossbar with his face. He returned for one shift.
"He has some wounds," Keefe said. "He was fine to continue. I just chose not to play his line beyond that one shift he had when he came back. As far as I know, he will be fine."
Toronto's special teams continued to excel, going 1-for-2 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
David Kampf scored his second shorthanded goal in as many games Thursday.
Toronto has seven shorthanded goals this season, tied for second in the NHL with the Florida Panthers entering play on Friday. The Vegas Golden Knights lead the league with nine shorthanded goals.
After Morgan Reilly's power-play goal gave Toronto a 2-0 lead early in the second period against Pittsburgh, the Leafs killed off three consecutive minor penalties, with Kampf's goal making it a three-goal lead.
"The penalty kill in that second period, I mean the game could have changed dramatically if we don't get it done there," Keefe said. "And not only do we get it done and get out of there clean but we get a huge shorthanded goal again so love those parts of it and then Jack Campbell was just outstanding in net."
Blues defenseman Justin Faulk had an assist in Montreal on Thursday to extend his point streak to five games (one goal, four assists).
Toronto is 18-4-1 at home and St. Louis is 10-8-4 in road games.
