GDT #5: Blues vs Kings | 7:00 pm CT | BSMW, 101 ESPN

Post by theohall »

The St. Louis Blues are off to a 4-0 start for just the third time in franchise history. Never have they began a season with a five-game winning streak.

Can they do it this season?

We'll find out on Monday when they host the Los Angeles Kings for the second consecutive game (7 p.m., BSMW, 101 ESPN). The teams will meet one more time on Nov. 3 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

On Saturday, David Perron recorded his sixth career hat trick, Jake Neighbours scored his first career goal, Torey Krug netted three assists and Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko each had two assists in a 7-3 win.

With 22 goals through their first four games, the Blues have matched a franchise record that was set in 1988. So far, the Blues lead the League this season with 5.50 goals-per-game.

BLUE NOTES
With Saturday's hat trick, Perron moved past Red Berenson (172) for 10th in Blues history with 174 goals. Perron joins Brett Hull (27), Bernie Federko (11), Brian Sutter (7), Garry Unger (7), Jorgen Pettersson (5) and Brendan Shanahan (5) as the only players in Blues history with at least five hat tricks... Jordan Binnington hasn't lost in regulation in 13 consecutive regular-season games dating back to the 2020-21 season. During that streak, Binnington is 5-0-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average and a .925 save-percentage at Enterprise Center.
St. Louis went 27-20-9 overall during the 2020-21 season while going 12-11-5 at home. The Blues averaged 3.6 penalties and 8.1 penalty minutes per game.

Los Angeles finished 21-28-7 overall and 12-14-2 on the road a season ago. The Kings scored 2.5 goals per game while allowing opponents to average 3.0 last season.

The teams meet for the second straight game.

INJURIES: Blues: Brandon Saad: day to day (health protocols).

Kings: Brendan Lemieux: day to day (covid-19), Drew Doughty: day to day (lower-body).
The Los Angeles Kings will try to clean up their special teams play when they visit the St. Louis Blues again Monday.

The Kings allowed four power-play goals and a short-handed tally while falling 7-3 Saturday in the first of their consecutive games against the Blues in St. Louis.

On the heels of their 3-2 overtime loss Friday night in Dallas, the Kings were a step behind the well-rested Blues.

"When you're minus five in special teams situations, it's not going anywhere for you," Kings coach Todd McLellan said. "That's the worst I've seen us penalty kill, maybe in the NHL, since I've been here, so that was very disappointing, and our power play was just as bad. Obviously your 5-on-5 game isn't going to be very good when that's as bad as it is."

David Perron scored two power-play goals for the Blues with one-time shots from the left circle. Ryan O'Reilly and James Neal scored from point-blank range by converting pinpoint passes with the man advantage.

So McLellan saw much room for improvement from his penalty killers.

"Faceoffs, retrievals, battles, blocked shots, clears, seams, goaltending -- all six or seven of those things, so we've got a lot of work to do," he said. "We'll rest, we'll look at the video and we'll figure things out."

The Kings are winless (0-3-1) in their last four games while the Blues have won their first four games while outscoring opponents 22-11.

The Blues are winning with balanced scoring. They have used 20 skaters this season and each has registered at least one point, with Jordan Kyrou (two goals, six assists) and Perron (five goals, two assists) leading the way.

They will get winger Pavel Buchnevich back from his two-game NHL suspension for a head-butting incident, but winger Brandon Saad (COVID-19 protocol) may remain on the shelf Monday.

In their absence Neal, Klim Kostin, and Kyle Clifford filled in nicely on the forward lines.

"It's clear that our offense is pretty balanced to be honest," Perron said. "We're pretty deep even with those two (Buchnevich and Saad) out of the lineup. (Clifford) comes in; he's obviously a regular in the NHL.

"Jake's pushing for a spot. We got Vladi (Tarasenko) on the so-to-speak third line. Kyrou's had a hot start. So I think on any given night someone's hot, and you can have a good night. And it's tough on the other team. You can't cover all three lines."

The Kings will likely be without cornerstone defenseman Drew Doughty (knee injury) for the second straight game. Veteran Olli Maata stepped in to take his spot in the lineup Saturday.

McLellan has been alternating goaltenders, so Jonathan Quick (0-1-1, 2.94 goals-against average) may get the call after Calvin Petersen's rough outing (seven goals allowed on 40 shots) Saturday.

Blues coach Craig Berube has stuck with No. 1 goaltender Jordan Binnington (4-0, 2.75 GAA) so far this season, but he could give backup Ville Husso his first regular-season action to keep him fresh.

And we play the Kings again, on the road, a week from Wednesday. Blues are getting 2 of their 4 West Coast trips out of the way early.

I hope Husso doesn’t suck because I don’t want them to rush Hofer up. I think honestly, 2 AHL seasons and one backing up Binnington and he should be ready to go as the heir #1. Husso has to be better than last season. A big win and tonight and the boys not letting up if they have a big lead would help set the tone.

18 SOGs in the first period.

In the 2nd, Jake Walman looked completely crappy resulting in multiple d-zone turnovers - one of which led to a penalty on Neighbours. If Walman wants to find his way to the bench, this period would do it. Kings were doing a really good job of reading where Blues D wanted to go after dump ins and taking it away. Krug got caught spending way too much time in the Blues end and against the Kings size, that was an issue. The Blues didn't adjust until very, very late in the period.

Husso has looked great in spite of what was probably the Blues worst 20 minutes this season.

I'm stuck with the radio feed so I can't see what's going on, but from the sounds of it I'd guess Walman will probably be replaced by Mikkola next game?

More than likely Mikkola plays vs the Avs.

I don't get how Walman and the D sucking equaled replacing Kostin on the ROR/Perron line with Neal. Makes NO sense at all and Neal has added nothing since being moved up...

I hope Tarasenko just forgets the whole trade request deal, but if he's still adamant about it he's certainly upping his value so far.

Just something weird from tonight... every Blues goal was the result of defensive play creating a turnover. Of course, after Tarasenko scored, the Kings started gambling with their D playing up and it cost them.
