Chat with us here: BEST DAMN BLUES CHATZY EVER 2016-2017
Going head to head against one of the biggest and strongest teams in the NHL, Philadelphia Flyers coach Dave Hakstol decided to sit defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who is 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, and rookie forward Travis Konecny, who is 5-foot-10, 175 pounds.

The Flyers had one of their strongest defensive efforts of the season in a 1-0 overtime loss to the Kings and will try to carry that same defensive mindset into Monday night's home game against the decidedly smaller St. Louis Blues.

"We will consider who our opponent is," Hakstol said when asked if Gostisbehere and Konecny would return to the lineup after two straight games in the press box. "Those two young guys are a huge part of what we are doing. They have been a big part of any success that we have had. They happen to have been out the last couple of nights, nothing more than that."

Physically, the Blues are an imposing team on the blue line with Jay Bouwmeester and Colton Parayko, but up front they have only a handful of forwards over 6-foot-1 and will be without forward Robby Fabbri, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury to his left knee in Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Those facts could mean a return to the lineup for Gostisbehere and Konecny.

The Blues (25-22-5, 55 points) and Flyers (26-20-7, 59 points) are in similar positions in their respective conferences, with the Flyers barely holding onto the final playoff berth in the East and the Blues within striking distance of one in the West.

Since the firing of Ken Hitchcock on Feb. 1, the Blues have split their last two games, beating the Maple Leafs 5-1 in Mike Yeo's debut as head coach, and dropping a 4-1 decision to the Penguins on Saturday.

"I know it's been a long emotional week for everybody," Yeo told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch after the loss to the Penguins. "We had a good game (on Thursday) and this was not a good game. What I've said all along is, we need to continue to build our game. It has to be our focus."

The seriousness of Fabbri's injury was announced Sunday by the Blues. St. Louis president of hockey operations and general manager Doug Armstrong expects Fabbri to be ready for training camp.

Fabbri, who is fourth among Blues forwards with 11 goals and fifth with 29 points, left Saturday's game midway through the first period after being checked hard into the boards and did not return. He's gone 16 games without a goal but provides the Blues with speed down the middle.

"That's never something you want to see and we're wishing the best for him," Blues forward Jaden Schwartz said Saturday. "That's a tough break there."

The Blues have lost six of their last eight games and have been outscored 32-15 in those losses and their 3.10 goals-against this season ranks 26th in the NHL.

The Flyers, meanwhile, have gotten three straight solid efforts from goaltender Michal Neuvirth, who is expected to get the start against the Blues. Neuvirth has allowed one goal in each of those three starts, going 2-0-1, and could be on the verge of replacing Steve Mason as the Flyers' No. 1 netminder.

"So many times the more I play the better I play," Neuvirth said. "I felt really good out there (on Saturday). I am seeing the puck well. It would have been nice if we could win that game (Saturday) but, it didn't happen. We have to be ready for Monday because, we have another tough team coming."
Blues • The Blues begin a five-game road trip Monday in Philadelphia and will play six of their next seven games on the road. ... This is the second meeting of the season between the clubs; the Blues won 6-3 over the Flyers on Dec. 28. ... The team is in a stretch of seven straight games against Eastern Conference opponents and is 11-10-1 vs. the conference this season. ... The Blues will be without left winger Robby Fabbri, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Saturday. They have called up wingers Kenny Agostino and Magnus Paajarvi.

Flyers • Philadelphia enters Monday’s game holding down the second wild-card position in the Eastern Conference standings. ... The Flyers are coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to the LA Kings at home, running their streak to nine straight home games with at least a point (7-0-2). ... Forward Wayne Simmonds, who was the MVP of the NHL All-Star game, leads the team with 21 goals this season, but he does not have a point in three games since the break. ... Michal Neuvirth has made the last two starts in net for Philadelphia, allowing a combined two goals on 44 shots.

Injuries • Blues — LW Robby Fabbri (knee) and C Kyle Brodziak (foot), out. Flyers — D Michael Del Zotto (lower body), out.

This day in history:
1971 Bobby Hull scores three goals to get his 26th NHL hat trick, tying Maurice Richard's NHL record
1973 Connie Madigan, 38, becomes the oldest rookie in NHL history when he suits up for the Blues
1987 Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders becomes the first player in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in each of his first 10 seasons.
1990 Brett Hull becomes 1st son of NHL 50 goal scorer (Bobby) to score 50

Wow, earliest I've the seen the GDT up in a while. Were you up all night theo?

Game 3 of 7 straight games against Eastern Conference teams (and Game 1 of a 5-game road trip). Have to set the tone. Philly is not a pushover team.

2 points, please. :letsgoblues:

Having goofy sleep issues... lay down at 10 pm, wake up at 2:30 am and can't get back to sleep until middle of the afternoon... then it's 4 to 4 1/2 hours of sleep and wide awake again. Hopefully, it gets straightened out soon.

The GDT usually won't go up until after 10 am, because one of the history sources doesn't post their stuff until around 10 am, but today's general stuff was already Blues related.

Great block by Edmundson!

The Blues have been on their heels quite a bit. The 2 penalties have a lot to do with that. But they need to start skating better, and forcing the play.

Actually a pretty good offensive push by Jaskin.

We gotta get some time in the offensive zone, or the Flyers are going to start lighting

Agostino got in all alone in front, but was thwarted. Jaškin hit the post. Otherwise, the offence was pretty bleak.

A dangerous period for The Blues. They were lucky to come out at 0-0. Let;s hope they come out strong in The 2nd.

Stastny redirects puck into the net on a blast from Shattenkirk! Flyers challenge for offsides. Reviewed goal is good! Blues get some justice for a change!

2nd Period much better than The 1st, for The Blues. Lets hope the come out strong in The 3rd, and win it going away. Barbashev has looked good again. Agostino has looked decent.

Agostino gets a breakaway and gets a goal-scorer's goal, roofing it high in the right corner! A finisher!!! Blues lead 2-0!!!

Fantastic first goal (with the Blues) for Agostino. Beautiful breakaway chance, and he sure didn't waste it.

I know he's played a little before but he's not intimidated at all.

Great win. Slow slow slow start, but our guys really found the fire as it went on. I've watched two games of Hutton this year, both shutouts. Going to try to tune in for him haha

Great shutout win on the road! Agostino looked good, with that goal-scorer's goal, also hitting the post, getting back well on defence, and blocking a key shot! Barbashev continues to look good, as well.

Negatives
Horrible first period effort
Dear Joel Edmundson, when you are behind the net, get your stick ON THE ICE, not parallel to the ice at your waist. 3 times pucks went past him behind the net while his stick was in the air leading to Flyers chances, because the Flyers player opposite where the puck was coming from behind Edmundson HAD HIS STICK ON THE ICE!!!

Positives
Hutton for the whole game. His 1st period effort kept the Blues in the game.
Berglund had an outstanding defensive game which doesn't show up on the score sheet.
The Agostino-Lehtera-Perron line was the only Blues line with a positive shot differential and it was a significant difference with Agostino leading the team (12 Corsi) in his 14 minutes of ice time.
Good response in 2nd and 3rd after the lack of effort in the 1st.
