Schwartz extended for 5 years/$27mil

Good term, good figure, now it's on Schwartz to elevate his game, stay healthy, and put up points. Where the market is and what Schwartz offers us when he's healthy, this could be a steal in 2-3 years. They ended up avoiding arbitration, which is good, and got the #1 offseason priority signed. I'll take it.

Agreed. And looks like final figure is $26.75mil, so a hair under what was first reported.

I kinda wonder what gave today though. This doesn't seem like a deal the Blues would have turned down unless they wanted more years or something. Maybe Schwartz agreed to $5.35mil AAV instead of $6mil, but wanted to hit free agency earlier than the Blues wanted. I'm just speculating though.

Well that was slightly unexpected.

Good enough. Now he needs to stay healthy.

Maybe his agent went shopping and based on last year's numbers and his injury, other teams didn't want to commit to as much/long as they were asking for?

Would have to guess the injury was a key element of the negotiations. His comps got $6M+ per, but they've generally been healthy.

Good signing by Armstrong. Good to put this to bed.

After this, I'd say get Sobotka signed and be done with it. Shop 22 at the deadline unless someone kicks down the door in desperation and will overpay.

Still need scoring. Good signing but I'm still shopping Shatty if I'm Armstrong. Who doesn't want an all star caliber power play qb defenseman?

Edmonton could use defenders and they have some top line forwards we could package a deal for. Personally, I'd keep Shatt and change our style of play to accomomdate Dmen being an offensive threat. Our depth at D is just that mighty.

If Shatt has to be traded, has to be for a legit scoring forward or gtfo.

Schmaltz, Vannelli, Walman and Dunn are all billed as guys who can play like Shatty. Parayko already is, Pie already is, so I could honestly give a crap less if they trade Shatty. I could give slightly more of a crap if they traded Pie but you know what? We have so many guys plowing through the system that it'll be impossible to play all of them. Someone has to get traded which may be depressing the market for Shatty a little bit. Other teams see what we have in the pipeline and they know we need to unload someone eventually. There's also a couple of Finns who are considered more stay at home guys, and Lindbohm of course to think about. What we've done is akin to baseball teams drafting all the same position and then having a guy blocked by a young all-star and having to wallow in AAA because there's no room for him. The best thing to do is trade Shatty + another prospect D, not one of the bigger names but maybe Niko Mikkola--left handed shot, for scoring. You have to trade from a strength to sure up a weakness and there's no question that our strength is D and our weakness is scoring wingers. Like you said, Edmonton definitely could use but Shatty seems to be putting the kibosh on that. I'm almost positive he'd definitely accept a trade to Boston or to the Rangers... maybe Brad Marchand + Jake Debrusk.

Schwartz extended for 5 years/$27mil

If the Bruins traded Marchand, the natives may storm TD Garden but I would pick that dude up @ the airport myself. He's a frickin' beaut.

You mentioned the Rangers and Kreider in another thread. That's something I could see going down.

On Schwartz, agreed all around. Nice deal, stay healthy. Time to take that step and bury 30 goals.

Yeah, I like Kreider, I like Zuccarello, neither is a lights out offensive beast, but they would provide good secondary scoring. No way would I trade Shatty for either straight up. They come together, or they come with prospects.

Edit: Actually just read that the Rangers may be shopping Kreider and Derek Stepan, and they do need right side defense. That would be killer to get both of them.

After the Hall deal fell through, the first rumor I heard was Shatty in a deal for Stepan. I wouldn't be opposed. Anything to help with the speed up front for the Blues, and like you said, we've got D depth for dayyyys. Shatty is expendable even though he's a great player.

This allows them to bring Sobotka back without any other moves in terms of salary cap.

Glad he signed for less than 6 per. Had he gotten 6, Sobotka would have been a problem.

If bringing Sobotka back is the end of the offseason plan, I'll be pissed. In particular because Army's acting like Boat is already back when he isn't yet, so when October rolls around and he's still playing in freakin' Russia we'll be franked even worse than we are now.

Edmonton won't trade anything of real value for Shattenkirk because Shatty told them he wouldn't resign there.
If Shatty had agreed to resign here, we'd have had Hall for him. That came out when Hall was traded.

Shaw getting that deal from the Habs really upped the market for guys like Schwartz that are better. The league overall seems to be headed in a direction of guys either being paid huge money or being entry level - and not many in between. The $1-$3M per guy is fading fast.

Which is why another lockout is rumored to be on the horizon after this CBA expires.

Oh boy.

Congrats to the 2010-2022 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks!

Salary cap is a double edged sword. It breeds parody but then you see this type of stuff happening. The NBA's salary cap and financial structure is fille with so many rules that I have no idea where to even begin, but they have some unique rules that allows teams to go over the cap but pay a luxury tax. There are certain levels and percentages that guys can take up of a team's cap. Maybe the NHL should look into that. It's convoluted but maybe something worth checking into to avoid constant lockouts like they keep having.
