Keep in mind Brouwer was playing for a contract - I don't see this as a loss for the Blues. In his time with Chicago I was always ho-hum on him - he was a vanilla forward bottom 6. He had a nice playoffs this year and turned it into a bigger payday. Consider yourselves lucky for not resigning him.WaukeeBlues wrote:Don't get Brouwer's cap hit. Blues probably could've afforded that. Apparently he just really wanted to go to Calgary.

Backes and Brouwer gone. Neither a surprise and probably good fiscal moves for the Blues.
Perron back? Interesting. Didn't figure he was a hitch sort of guy.
allen extended. New cap hit kicks in next season right?

We'll see what happens with Shatty. But, this kinda feels like we're about to have a transitional year from old core to new core. I don't think we're going to be bad this year, but we'll probably be worse than last season. Key is to make sure it's a one step back, two steps forward kind of thing by filling in pieces around our younger core.

Depending on what they get if they trade Shattenkirk I have to assume Rattie will finally find his way onto the team and maybe Barbashev or Maceachern.

I'm mostly pissed about Perron. He isn't good. At all.

Perron is actually the one bright spot I see from all of this. He won't adequately replace Backes or Brouwer, but I think he can be a good fit here. This is a different team today than it was a few years ago. And, he's a different, better player now too. I think he'll be fine as a 2nd/3rd liner for us.

Re: Free Agent Moves and Major Trades
Anyone who thinks Montreal got the better end of that deal is living in the hockey past. In pretty much every meaningful metric, Subban is better. Among Dmen, only Karlsson has a more positive effect on creating offensive chances. Also, Montreal's top pairing will now be Weber and Markov. They're going to spend a lot of time waving at forwards from TB/WAS/PIT/NYR as they fly by. And the commitment to Weber goes through his age-38 season; Subban's ends after his age-32 season.
Basically, Montreal's coaching/management were so aggrieved with Subban, somehow, they made a disastrous deal to get rid of him.

Re: Free Agent Moves and Major Trades
Virtually every good team from last season is worse now than they were before UFA period started. Blues are no exception. We're going to see the smallest point totals differential between #1 and #30 this season than at virtually any other time. Just what the salary cap has created.Krigloch the Furious wrote:I don't understand

I largely agree with this. With the departure of Backes and Brouwer (our remnant of trading Oshie) it's definitely a signaling of a new era, with spots on this team to be won in camp, primarily Ty Rattie me thinkscardsfan04 wrote:We'll see what happens with Shatty. Personally I'm of the opinion that if Perron is a 2nd-line winger we've got some bigger problems. His numbers the last couple years are 3rd-line level, tops.

From what I understand, you are right. He has 1 year left on his current deal, then the 4 year extension kicks in.flyingnote38 wrote:Backes and Brouwer gone. Neither a surprise and probably good fiscal moves for the Blues.

There are so many people freaking out about the Blues losing Backes and Brouwer on social media, but I'm not seeing anyone saying they'd be willing to put up a combined 10 mil for both of these guys for 9 combined seasons spanning age ranges of 32-37 and 31-35.

Is this aimed at me? I mean, I said that above, but I wasn't meaning positionally, I was meaning more from a points output and PP role standpoint.theohall wrote:Why do morons write articles that say a Left Winger replaces a Right Winger?

Tarasenko is Tarasenko
Bergy sucks
Jaskin sucks
Schwartz and Fabbri are little guys

Re: Free Agent Moves and Major Trades
Agreed. As is often the case, people are pissed off for the wrong reasons. Boston is another team living in the past; they're going to be paying a 3rd/4th liner $6M to play "heavy" and contribute 30 points in a couple seasons. Harsh, but true. Brouwer? Before last season, he had 19 points in 78 career playoff games for the Blackhawks and Caps. Dare say the Flames will regret that one.dmiles2186 wrote:There are so many people freaking out about the Blues losing Backes and Brouwer on social media, but I'm not seeing anyone saying they'd be willing to put up a combined 10 mil for both of these guys for 9 combined seasons spanning age ranges of 32-37 and 34-38.
Now what's going on in the Blues' goal...that may be worth getting a bit het up...
Re: Free Agent Moves and Major Trades
Now that's fair. Backes & Brouwer's 450-ish combined hits are more than the rest of the Blues top-9 put together last season.Krigloch the Furious wrote:Physical I should have said.

Perron signing is harder to understand the more I think of it-except for the part where it's implied that Hitch hates Ty Rattie, who at this point is at least as much of a player and a similar type.

Re: Free Agent Moves and Major Trades
To me, this is the big issue. Bouwmeester isn't bad per se, but we're going to lose Shatty because we can't fit him under the cap while we're paying Bouwmeester $5.4 mil to play the same position. Instead of having a really good young defenseman here longterm and some cap space, we have Bouwmeester here long term and it's unclear whether we can allocate cap space to Shatty beyond this year or we should be using that for something else.Krigloch the Furious wrote:Also....Jay Bouwmeester.

Losing Brouwer and Backes sucks, but those were bad contracts. Losing Elliott sucks, but I have confidence in Allen to be just as good as Elliott. The Shattenkirk situation is bad on a bunch of levels though and I don't really see any silver lining to it. If we trade him and get good value, I'll revisit my sentiments, but that situation is purely negative to me right now.

Vanek to Detroit for 1 year/$2.6mil. I would have signed him for that in a heartbeat.

We were trying to sign him and he was strongly rumored to be going to us today for $2M - but apparently Detroit offered more.cardsfan04 wrote:Vanek to Detroit for 1 year/$2.6mil. I would have signed him for that in a heartbeat.
