Rangers trade for rights to St. Louis Blues rookie Fabbri at OHL trade deadline

The Canadian Press

TORONTO - Kitchener acquired the rights to Robby Fabbri just before Monday's Ontario Hockey League trade deadline. Whether or not he will ever suit up for the Rangers is another matter.

The Rangers sent three draft picks to Guelph on Monday in exchange for the rights to Fabbri, who has firmly entrenched himself as a member of the NHL's St. Louis Blues this season. Guelph picked up the Rangers' third round pick in 2020, a conditional second round pick (originally from Saginaw) in 2018, and a conditional second round pick in 2019.

The 19-year-old Fabbri, the Blues' first-round pick in 2014, has 10 goals and four assists in 39 games so far in his rookie NHL campaign.

"Given Fabbri is on pace for a 20 goal NHL season, we feel it is unlikely that he will be reassigned to major junior this year," Storm general manager Mike Kelly in a statement. "Because of that, we thought a third round pick for his rights and two conditional second round picks in 2018 and 2019 was a fair deal to make with the Kitchener Rangers."

Fabbri had 171 points (80 goals, 91 assists) in 149 regular season games with the Storm. He also had two goals and four assists in seven games as a member of the gold medal-winning Canadian team at the 2015 world junior hockey championship.

Should Fabbri return to the OHL, he will be a huge help to a Knights team sitting in third place in the tough Midwest Division despite having the OHL's third-best record at 28-6-4.

In another blockbuster before the deadline, the Saginaw Spirit sent forward Dylan Sadowy and defenceman Gregory DiTomaso to Barrie in exchange for defenceman Rockey Kaura and 11 draft picks.

Sadowy, a San Jose Sharks third-round pick in 2014, has 20 goals and 14 assists in 36 games with the Rangers this year, and 91 goals and 61 assists in 257 games over his OHL career.

DiTomaso has a goal and seven assists in 30 games this season. Last season he had three goals and 17 assists in 47 games as well as a plus-6 defensive rating.

Kaura has three assists in 35 games this season. The Colts also surrendered a second- and fourth-round pick in 2016, a third-round pick in 2017, a third- and fourth-round pick in 2018, a second-round pick in 2019, a second- and fifth-round pick in 2020, a second-round pick in 2021, a conditional second-round pick in 2022 and a conditional third-round pick in 2023.

Barrie is two points up on Niagara for the Central Division lead, while Saginaw is sitting in fourth place in the West Division.

Also Monday, Kingston traded Brett Primeau to Windsor for future considerations, and Sudbury sent forward Chad Heffernan to London for a fourth-round pick in 2016.

I was confused for a ridiculous amount of time, partially because the "Rangers" threw me off as I glazed over the "Kitchener" part.

Makes sense for the Guelph Storm though. Really nothing to lose here.

Maybe there's something i don't see, but what's the point of this trade? Looking at it now, there's no chance Fabbri ever goes back to that level, to me he's now an NHL player, end of story.

I don't know the point but one conclusion I have drawn is that OHL draft picks are essentially worthless.
