BTW, as someone that was down on Allen earlier for not looking sharp for a few starts, he has certainly looked a TON better the last few times we've seen him. Looked great again today, shame he couldn't get a W or even a shutout on 2 flukey goals.

Doesn't matter how the stick broke, Petro could have hacked it in half when it was his hands and it still shouldn't have been a goal. Playing the puck with a broken stick is a 2 minute minor. It's quite black and white in the rulebook, which makes it even more egregious that it was called incorrectly.

Ok so why didn't the ref call it then? I'm just trying to giving an explanation as to why he didn't. Maybe he saw it as unintentional and the act of Petro shoving Abdelkader is what caused the stick to break.

Because refs miss calls sometimes. That's what happened here. We don't need to make it more than it is. Bad calls happen and they happen to everybody. But, there's no justification either. They made a mistake. That's really the bottom line. Even if he didn't call it because "______," he was making a mistake for using a reason to not enforce a rule.

The act of Petro had nothing to do with anything. Abdelkader's stick may have been slightly broken before he whacked Allen's pads, but when he did whack Allen's pads, that is when it pretty much broke in two and then he played the puck with it. He immediately dropped it after he scored because he knew what he did. If he celebrates with half a stick in his hand, the ref may have been inclined to disallow it.

But the ref most likely didn't see the broken stick when it broke, otherwise he would have called a penalty. He likely only saw it after the goal (or didn't see it at all), and since it's an unreviewable play, that's it.

What annoyed me is that the NBC Sports announcers commented on how the stick was broke before he played it, but never once said the goal shouldn't have counted.

It's a complete joke that that kind of play isn't reviewable. During a review, they can completely disregard a ref's whistle, but they can't disallow a goal for playing a puck with a broken stick. Idiocy.

The league said they don't want to get into the business of calling penalties from the war room...and that is what would have had to happen if they disallowed the goal. But why does that matter? They'd be getting the call right on a black and white call. There is no subjectiveness to it. It was 100% a penalty and 100% a no goal.

Blues getting hosed when playing Detroit is nothing new though. We should be used to this.
If the Blues got all of the calls and bounces that Detroit has gotten over the years, we may have a cup or two. There, I said it. I don't care if it sounds bitter or not, that's just the way it is.

Objection, irrelevant.

Yeah, just a missed call...I guess...and yet, I've seen so many thing like this with the Red Wings since the 90s. I recently said that club has caught pure good luck for 25 years, mainly because I don't want to consider the alternative.

Oh, and how about that-NHL doesn't want off-ice officials making calls on good or bad goals when it might result in a penalty but they're definitely cool with refs huddling up and reconsidering a penalty in the middle of a period after the player has already entered the box. And the results are: a W for Detroit and a penalty on Crosby nullified. Shocker.

fun fact: the Referee who missed the broken stick (Ian Walsh) was also the same guy that gave Backes the phantom 5 minute major against Detroit two years ago

So we need to boo Walsh now I guess.

Like Bill said on the podcast last night...the refs need to be held accountable for missed calls measuring this level of incompetence. No postseason games or no marquee matchups or a lighter workload...or whatever.

I assume so.
I guess what the NHL needs to do is institute a form of public shaming. That would make me feel maybe 10% better.
