I switched from Dish to Direct TV when all that bs was going on with FSMW.
If you can get Direct TV it's pretty sweet for sports fans.

Second the love for DirecTV. If you like sports, DirecTV is where it's at.

Looks like it won't even play when you act like your in Russia. Works like a charm in the U.S. still though.
Blackouts rule the world I guess.

I was getting a "connection error" when trying to view from Russia or the United States through Hola.
If I disconnect Hola, it works great for any game, except the Blues.

Unblock-us.com $4.99 a month (so ~$30 to add to $75). This is how I watch the Blues with my regular Gamecenter subscription.

Hmmmmmmm.

We're planning to "cut the cord" with DTV after this contract is up. I was going to sign up for that hockeystreams site but this sounds like a less shady option (because it really IS a little shady) that will give SOME of my money back to the NHL.

Every time I think about cutting the cord, I think about how much sports I watch.
If I could legitimately watch the local sports teams with Gamecenter Live and the MLB package, etc...I'd consider it...especially now that we have faster internet at our house (finally).

Things that would almost be a must for me if I cut the cord...
- Subscription to Netflix - $9/mo
- Subscription to Hulu Plus - $8/mo
- Subscription to Amazon Prime (necessary?? not sure.) - $7/mo
- Subscription to NHL Gamecenter Live - $6/mo
- Subscription to MLB.tv - $11/mo
- A streaming media device like Chromecast or Roku - (already have Chromecast)
- Some kind of setup to allow for watching streaming content on all of our tv's.
- We'd need to buy an hdtv for the bedroom...still have a tube tv in there. (waiting for it to die)

And ok...the NFL doesn't seem to have an online streaming service. Unless I am not seeing it. How are you supposed to legitimately watch NFL games if you cut the cord?

Questions...
1) If I were to cut the cord, I don't want half of my programming to be streamed via an illegal streaming site where the quality is meh and it's full of ads. That's ok once in a while for some things...but not every week for sports and certain shows. That would get old real fast. So... programs such as The Walking Dead, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, on AMC and FX...those aren't available online right away, correct? Isn't there like a week delay or so? That would kind of suck.

2) The quality can't be quite as good as through DirectTV, Charter, etc...I mean, the picture might be very nice, but it won't be quite as nice as from a provider. So, I'd essentially be wasting my HD tv then, right? If the quality of the picture isn't quite as good, then it might be worth it to not cut the cord and get the best picture.

Things that are deal breakers for me:
- Not being able to watch local sports.
- Picture quality not quite as good.
- Having to wait to watch new episodes of programs until they show up on Hulu or wherever. Could be days or weeks.
- Not being able to watch certain shows at all.

We have DirectTV's Genie setup now...and we love it. Yes, it is much more expensive than it would be if we cut the cord and went streaming services, but we also get a lot more stuff, we get it in better quality and quite frankly, it's hella convenient.

So, has anyone cut the cord? What are your thoughts? Am I off base on some of my points? I'm curious.

I haven't cut the cord, but I've debated doing it for a long time. But I haven't, mostly because of the reasons you've listed. Sports are definitely the #1 reason I still have cable. In fact, I'd venture to guess, most cable providers are thanking their lucky stars for live sporting events because otherwise they'd be out of business.

My one question/issue with cutting the cord is that in the future, won't we all be paying just as much for the a la carte format as we are for cable? You pay for NHL, MLB, NFL (if they have one), Netflix/Hulu/Amazon, maybe something like HBO Go....you're probably looking at something in the ballpark of your cable bill. And that's not to mention if there are other options that become necessary in the meantime.

But I guess the point remains that you'd get to pick and pay for exactly what you want instead of paying for a bunch of garbage you never watch. Either way, I just can't bring myself to cut the cord, not yet. Not until there are legitimate sports options and the quality of the picture/speed of the stream is top notch.

I listed what those services cost per month...give or take. From what I have listed, that is only $41/mo. And if you add HBO go or whatever else, just tack that on...so maybe you're paying $50 or so a month. But you are probably looking at at least cutting your monthly cost in half or maybe by two-thirds. We pay $115 for DirecTV every month.

I guess you do get more of some things. Such as NHL Gamecenter and MLB.tv in getting all of the games. And Netflix, Hulu, etc having all of that stuff on demand is nice. But nationally televised games on NBC Sports aren't on Gamecenter...and ESPN's MLB games of the week aren't on MLB.tv, so you'd be SOL on those.

What also worries me is that I am positive I am forgetting some major stuff, and if we were to cut the cord, two months from now I'd realize...well shit. We can't do whatever anymore...that sucks. Or we don't get to watch that anymore...that sucks too.

I'd love to cut the cord. But there is just too many things I can't watch or it would be a hassle to watch or the quality wouldn't be there for me to pull the trigger on that.

Like you said Miles...once those options are available, I'd seriously consider it. But no local sports and no NFL at all is a complete deal breaker.

We cut the cord over two years ago. I won't go back. I pay for Netflix and Huluplus, and that's less than the taxes on the cable bill.

You get used to watching the shows a day late on Hulu and it's fine. The reduced commercials are a giant plus too.

My kids don't recall watching TV with commercials. It's awesome.

The picture quality depends on your intarweb speed... they have 1080i resolution if you have the bandwidth to support it.

I don't like Amazon. We tried it - it didn't offer much more than what we have without paying per item.

You can get NFL games in HD with an HD antenna... network television is free. You don't get all of them, but you would get Rams and a couple of national games plus the night game on Sunday. MNF is a different story, cable is about your only option for that.

As far as hockey, you would be SoL. I can't get it here in KC because of blackout restrictions (which is just bullshit) even on nights when the local FS channel is showing something else and not offering an alternate feed.

I've tried the HD antenna to get the local stations. Tried it a couple different times with two different antennas. For the life of me, I couldn't get it to work. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. It just really pissed me off...just got all snow and fuzz...no picture at all.
And I forgot about the NFL games on Sundays on CBS and FOX. I guess I'd have to get an HD antenna put on the roof or something. I've only tried the set top ones.

If I recall, you are out in Illinois. You may need something on the roof or in your attic. I don't know how far away from the antennas you are.

I am about 15 miles from the major stations in KC, and I use the cheapest digital antenna I could find. It's a flat square that hangs on the wall... nothing to adjust at all. It works fine for us. /shrug.

Yup. I'm in Illinios. We're 25 miles from downtown St. Louis...which should easily be close enough for solid reception. I read that 70 miles is about the limit.
That point is moot though, as I won't be cutting the cord anytime soon.

I think you would be shocked after the first month at how much more productive you are and how much you don't actually miss it.

If they wouldn't have blacked out the blues' games I would pay for Gamecenter. It's useless to me if I can't see the blues on it though.

That would absolutely suck for the non-St. Louisians in FSMW's area of coverage, because with or without Gamecenter or Center Ice, we wouldn't get that. Or, I'd have to resort to what I did about 5-6 years ago and bunny ear it and watch it in a haze of snow.

You're probably right with most of the shows we watch.

Sports are the biggest thing with me....that and not taking full advantage of my plasma tv. I'd feel I would be wasting it.
