Re: OLYMPIC HOCKEY!!!
So the only thing worse than our hockey performances against canaduhs, has been NBC and their shittacular coverage. I've watched a number of games on my phone from my office, and the streams are TERRIBLE, we don't get cable at work, so they need to have the service NOT SUCK ASS.

I think it depends on what you're using. The NBC web server is awful. The iPad app works really well. Go figure.
Anyhoo, like I said. If no one gets hurt today, we're all winners no matter what the score is. Vancouver in four days.

Poor St. Louis. Six days ago, they had Oshie as a national treasure. Today, they have a bunch of US flag t-shirts that will be on sale for $3 in the team store tomorrow. I feel bad for TJ, though...he's probably lost millions of dollars in 24 hours.
Seriously: they don't care, and neither do I. No one's been hurt yet, and I can't blame them for not caring. You don't become an NHL-quality player by giving a crap about a third-place exhibition game. We'll never stop the season for the Olympics again. College kids from now on.

Yep. I don't really care about the money side of things, but more as a fan of the Blues and someone who has been watching Osh since he came into the league, I was really pulling for him to have that national acclaim. The Wheaties box, the commercials, the whatever. But because our boys seemed to shut it down the last two games (even though I know they probably didn't), he'll just be one of those names that was famous for 2 weeks in February and people will always wonder what happened to him.Nyghtewynd wrote:Poor St. Louis. Good to see that it only took sports media two weeks to get what was obvious about a week and a half ago. The USOC is going to have to fire a lot of people.
It's depressing, and again, 3rd/4th makes no difference to me, but the media has been stirring up false bravado against the team every since their loss. It's at the point where I legit think that the Blues should not recognize the medal winners at a home game. I'm sorry for the four that won, but it would look ridiculous without mentioning the three Americans, and if they did they might get booed by their home crowd. There's no reason to risk it.

A) Do people really care about how many medals we won all that much? I don't. Whether we're #1 in total medals or not...really doesn't sway my thoughts on the Olympics.Nyghtewynd wrote:http://www.cbssports.com/olympics/eye-o ... edal-tally

B) The Blues should recognize all medal winners on our team. It would be ridiculous not to. The home crowd isn't going to boo Backes, Shattenkirk, and Oshie because they didn't medal. In fact, Oshie would get the biggest cheer of the night.
But it's proper sportsmanship to give a nod to the fact that 2 Blues are now Gold Medal winners, and 2 more are Silver medalists. They are our guys.
So what that the US didn't medal. They had a chance to play for a medal. They didn't drop out early like Russia or Slovakia. No offense, but not every gets incredibly bitter over defeat like you seem to. Our guys had a good showing. Oshie was one of the biggest US names at the Olympics. Personally, I'd be upset if the Blues didn't give a nod to all of our Olympians, winners/losers.

Re: OLYMPIC HOCKEY!!!
The US played awesome when it was still 0-0. They played far more intense than I honestly thought they would. But from the moment of Finland's first goal (and 20 seconds later with their second one) that was all she wrote. I think it's a completely different game if we had scored first and not the Fins. Oh well. And then the 3rd period was just embarrassing, guys were getting pissed off and frustrated, Kane on at least two occasions tried to be a hero and skate it nearly coast to coast attempting to dangle around the entire Finland roster, everyone marched to the penalty box... just embarrassing. But the first period was goodNyghtewynd wrote:Poor St. Louis. Six days ago, they had Oshie as a national treasure. That loss to Canada just sucked. Was listening to Serius XM NHL network and they were discussing that USA and Canada were in the tourney for a Gold and that was it. Once we weren't in THE medal game... the consolation prize just didn't seem all that cool anymore.
I still really enjoy seeing the pros represent their countries and I have the feeling they love it too. You can see guys out there giving all they got and really enjoy playing in the olympics. I think it would be a shame for the NHL to pull the pros for the next games. I know there are some strong arguments against it (top 2 I keep hearing are 1) injuries (a la John Tavares) and 2) Especially this olympic's with the time differential, the only people really watching the men's games were already big hockey fans anyway so you're not attracting more people to the sport than were already fans of it), but personally I still think it's overall a good thing for the sport and should continue. </rant>

Re: OLYMPIC HOCKEY!!!
I would rather see the NHL (and other pro leagues - I'm looking at you, NBA) remove their players from the event and let it be an amateur competition.
I would REALLY like to see a league champions tourney every couple years. I think that would be much more compelling. Take the major leagues around the world, stick a couple teams from each league in and play a home/home aggregate scoring system. Stick a giant cup on it, and you can really find out who has the best team in the world. The Blackhawks (last cup winner) playing the top team from the KHL for all the marbles would be interesting hockey.

Re: OLYMPIC HOCKEY!!!
I love the Cup idea too, but it can never happen as long as the KHL and NHL are the two biggest leagues. The KHL wants nothing other than superiority and will do anything to get it. The NHL won't do anything to risk giving the KHL such status. On top of that, the KHL is completely corrupt. Soccer has had to deal with its own cup issues, and the match fixing that has been caused by countries that are less stringent about controls have been damaged as a result. If a different country were #2, I'd be all about it. Since it's Russia, I can't be.
And, again: I don't care about losing a bronze-medal game in hockey. Once they lost against an obviously-better team, that pretty much ended my rooting interest. But every media report on the team has been "what a bunch of overpaid whiny losers", and Joe Six-Pack in the upper deck might buy that explanation.
I like the Olympics a lot, and even follow their work during the off-season. I have thought for a long time that the USOC is an old-boys network that is pretty much interested in PR and not interested in developing athletes, and their lack of effort is starting to come to a head. I don't blame them for hockey, because that's 100% the NHL. But I do think the USOC has needed a big overhaul for years now, and I'm hoping that this does it.

Oshie isn't going to be the next Mary Lou Retton or anything, but his fame within the hockey community just shot up 100 times. Now when they are on NBC it will be billed as "TJ Oshie and the Blues" because they will finally have a guy to latch onto. And you can bet that every non-local announcer (and our guys) will be talking about it for years when trying to find things to talk about during broadcasts.
