I feel ya man. Just didn't want you to think I was trying to nitpick you. Your point about getting the pick back is valid, so it's kinda like we gave up a conditional 1st and a late 2nd which is way different than 2 1sts.

Here are Toropchenko highlights from the Russia vs USA U18 World Championships in April this year.

If all three picks from this season workout, the Blues basically drafted a line...

Kostin-Thomas-Toropchenko....So look for that in about 3 years - although Kostin might be here sooner.

I can't find anything significant on Blues 5th round pick:
David Noel, D, shoots L, 6'1, 175 plays for Val D'Or in QMJHL

Well hopefully Kostin's attitude towards playing stateside is overblown.

Per reports on Twitter, Blues management and Kostin's agent are already working on terminating his KHL contract so he can sign his ELC with the Blues and play in North America next season, whether in the AHL or with the Blues. This is from the guy who runs RespectTheNote.com

And the last pick...
Anton Andersson, D, shoots L, 6'3, 216 SWE. Won 16-17 award for most goals scored by D in J18 Elit league, whatever that means, other than he has some offensive skill.

In that particular league, he had 7 G, 10 A in 15 games. I'm guessing Super Elit is one level up and his production wasn't as strong there - 13 GP 2 G 1 A, but that is probably playing against older and bigger players than the J18 Elit league.

Interestingly, there was another Anton Andersson NHL prospect born 3 years earlier, so be careful looking stuff up for this guy. The older guy doesn't appear to have been drafted.

Uh, we didn't get the Thomas pick in the trades. That was our pick.

in other words we got Schenn, Kostin, Sundqvist
for Reaves, Lehtera, the 27th pick, the 51st pick, and a future first round pick

not as bad as a typical Army trade, but not exactly highway robbery either.

Out of curiosity for those upset with trade 1... would you rather have Lehtera back? Its a double win. Schenn is automatically better than Lehtera plus he'll make Tarasenko better too.

I'm overall pleased with the results from a weak draft year.

I don't want to give Doug too much credit. If he had not been in such a hurry to get Lehtera paid, he wouldn't have been so desperate to unload him. However, the fact that he's "admitting" his mistake with that trade last night is pleasantly surprising. Not having to worry about Lehtera being in the lineup every night is a sizable relief.

They came into the night w/ 2 firsts and left w/ the same. By all accounts, Thomas and Kostin are the two guys they wanted all along. They're a better looking team than they were before Friday night. If fans can't at least be somewhat pleased with that, you're never going to be happy.

If they could get one more top 6 guy (Kovalchuk? Williams?) in order to bump Steen down and lessen his burden? Ring the bell and let's go.

Kovalchuk is a pipe dream. Huge salary to pay, more than likely, plus whatever NJ wants in return, which will probably be substantial. Why should NJ help everyone else without getting something equivalent, or close to equivalent, in return? The only catch is Kovalchuk will be a UFA in 2018 if nothing changes this season.

There is also the rumor...
Quote:
His rumored limited trade demands may hurt his value. He apparently wants to stay either in the New York area or in Florida. If you extend that as far as possible, that leaves seven teams, including the Devils. Some of those teams find themselves with cap issues, so if Kovalchuk really puts his living situation first, he needs to watch how much he makes.

So I would forget Kovalchuk playing for the Blues.

Justin Williams, on the other hand, would be awesome! The kind of playoff standout the Blues lack outside of Fabbri who was clearly missed this season.

When talking about weak vs strong drafts - there were two players in the 2017 class considered to be "impact" players without reservation - Hischier and Patrick, even though there were some reservations about Patrick due to his injury. The 2018 class is already rated as having at least 12 impact type players.

It'd be interesting to see where Duchene ends up. It's hard to assess him individually. Numbers are not great for $6mm, but it was on the Avs. Avs want a D. Wonder if swapping him for Bouw would make sense for the Blues. Cap would be a wash and Schenn can play wing then, which many of the Flyers fans believe he's best at.

It's not like we've never traded with Colorado before, but I think at this point in their rebuild or whatever it is, they would want some prospects.

While I was trying to envision next years lines, I kept forgetting this guy or that guy which left me wondering where guys like Sanford, Barbashev and Sundqvist actually fit. When all is said and done, we're going to have too many guys for too few spots unless some players move on or move down. I'd take a run at trying to acquire Duchene, but I don't think they'd take Bouwmeester for him straight up.

Going to make one assumption - Kostin makes team.

The top 6: Tarasenko, Schenn, Schwartz, Fabbri, Stastny, Kostin.

Bottom 6: Sobotka, Berglund, Jaskin, Brodziak - and a dog fight for the last 2 spots between

Sanford, Sundqvist, and all those guys in the AHL and juniors still, plus any draft picks that might be ahead of where we expect. I have no idea who will grab the final 2 roster spots. My guess is Sundqvist replaces Brodziak for the 2018 season, so might not be on the roster this season. Toropchenko could be a wild card in this, because his specialty his net front presence on the power play while also being an excellent penalty killer.

I suppose a solid camp could change things but the 31st making the team this year seems a bit of a stretch... unless it's the only way to keep him out of Russia.

Looks like he was playing for the 2nd division team in Russia anyway so he won't be giving up KHL for AHL but rather making a lateral move. His concern apparently was taking a step down to play for CHL when he was playing for a KHL's farm club.

That is to say, I don't think not starting for the Blues out of the gate would preclude the move. Especially given the financial shape KHL found itself in recently.

One edge Kostin and Toropchenko have, they don't have to "grow" into their NHL size. They already are with both being 6'3 and ~190 - @ 18 no less. Yes, it's a reach, but it wouldn't surprise me if talent from one of the two edges out the 3rd/4th line mucker level prevalent last season.

My guess as to how it plays out. Kostin gets the 10-game tryout deal. If he doesn't stick this season, then Toropchenko gets a 10-game tryout. And they keep doing this with the guys on ELCs to find out whose best to keep around if no one beats out someone in camp. The catch with this - coach can't relegate these tryouts to 5 minutes per game in 3rd/4th line roles. They actually drafted talent, not muckers. Yeo, however, tends to put kids in those 3rd/4th lines roles, though, just like Hitchcock did with everyone not named Fabbri.
